The school to prison pipeline

WHAT IS THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE? The school to prison pipeline is a system that funnels our students from school to the judicial system and pushes them to prison.

“ Refers to the set of policies and practices that make the criminalization and incarceration of children and youth more likely and the attainment of a high-quality education less likely ” P1.

Simply put, is a phenomenon that is destroying our youth future by conditioning the students to a life in prison rather than educating them.

IT LOOKS SOMETHING LIKE THIS..

PEOPLE HAVE THIS TO SAY.

“ Never give up on children! “

WHY ? IS THIS HAPPENING ? Harsh ZERO TOLERANCE Policy Specially with Black /Latino and students with disabilities High rate of suspensions and expulsions you can be suspended for using your cellphone in class, or throwing a piece of paper to another student.

The involvement of police on public schools No more hallway monitors now you deal with cops Detention is replaced with a juvenile correction.

Lack of appropriate resources poorly resourced schools. Budget cuts. Unprepared teachers

WHO IS AFFECTED THE MOST? The most affected are the African-American students, Latino male students and students with disabilities, who as studies have demonstrated are 3x MORE likely to be suspended and expelled compared to its peers.

“ Students from two groups-racial minorities and children with disabilities are disproportionately represented in the school-to-prison pipeline” . Teaching Tolerance. N 43.

Consequently the cities with highest levels of poverty and crime are trapped in this circle where students end up with no education, and instead imprisoned. This damaged us everyone.

AND IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK…

“ Black and Latino males collectively make up about 78% of Boston school’s male population “

The reality is.. Our city of Boston struggles to proper educate black/Latino students despite being the major popularity. Steve Ruark states on his article that:“ Boston schools largely display a widespread lack of cultural competency when teaching those students” –Steve Ruark/AP. Boston despite a city with many great schools does not have what it takes to address the majority of its alumni on the public schools which happens to come from many different cultures. This is one reason why so many fail to graduate, and disengage from education. “Black and Latino males in Boston school have lower attendance rate, higher suspension rates and dropout rates” Schools do not use the appropriate material and thus students are set up for failure. “One of the reasons for dropouts is because there are no good resources “ – James VaznisWhen a student does not the proper books, or access to a computer lab his grades are bound to be compromised.

What can we do about it.. Raise awareness in our communities, and protest to let the government know that we are not okay with criminalizing our youth.

Support a new system that would focus on helping our children instead of severely punishing them.

Engage in school activities to get to know the faculty staff, it is crucial that our students know parents care for their education and the only way it can be proven is with the parents actively participating In school. Create a bond of community that sadly has been lost through the years.
