PRIME DISPATCH Edition 189 – 02/03/2018
Compiled by Joe o’NeILL
Zizzis winning on debut at Bendigo – great result!!!
Sizzling / Senro Kisaki 2015
At the 2017 Magic Millions January Sale I identified three first season sires whose progeny I was
impressed with and I expected to be good value. These were Sizzling, Epaulette and Zoustar. I settled
on purchasing the Sizzling filly out of Senro Kisaki if she wasn’t too expensive. She was a ripping
type.
The Epaulette and Zoustar yearlings we had on our list were just too expensive.
Before the sale I had decided to send a more expensive yearling to Patrick Payne. He deserved to get a
better credentialed yearling from me given the remarkable results he had achieved for Prime
Thoroughbreds. The filly I purchased him was named Zizzi’s and had her first start on Wednesday and
won like a good filly. She went into this race a bit under done. Patrick and I had decided to target her
at the $200k Adelaide Magic Millions Classic to be run on Adelaide Cup day and he didn’t want her
fully screwed down for debut run. I must say given her good trial I was surprised at her opening price
but that is the market.
In any case she has now qualified for the Adelaide Magic Millions Two Years Old Classic and barring
the unforeseen she will take her place on 12 April in the ‘City of Churches.’ I expect Billie Egan to
retain the ride.
As for Patrick’s record for us, it is extraordinary. I have now purchased him eight yearlings to race
with seven having won. These horses have now won 20 races and $1,547,886 with six of the eight still
racing. The combined purchase price of these eight yearlings was $459,500 (Average $57,437.50).
Sizzling / Belle D’Amour purchased at the Perth Magic mMllions for Dan Morton
It is hard to believe we are only two months into 2018. It has been a whirlwind couple of months and
seems a long time since we completed the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale although it was less than
six weeks ago. The three fillies I purchased at that sale will start to be broken in over the next couple
of weeks. This process takes about a month.
I thought it appropriate to look back at the four sales I have attended this year. I have secured 11
yearlings from them which gives us 12 for our crop so far. I am only looking to purchase 15 yearlings
at most this year.
While I was doing my preparations for the Gold Coast Magic Millions I kept getting the feeling we
had an above average group of first season sires on offer. I hadn’t had this feeling as I headed into the
sales round for a few years. All the sires I was attracted to were Australian bred horses and come
from lines that have done the job here. Across the sales series I have been able to secure one yearling
by each of these young gun sires. At the Gold Coast I purchased fillies by Dissident, Shooting To
Win and Wandjina. I loved these three fillies with each coming from good families. It was hard not
to be impressed with the sale. There were a host of good horses on offer and the final figures which
saw this sale being the highest grossing yearling sale ever conducted in the Southern Hemisphere tells
a great story. These fillies head to Kris Lees, John Moloney and Patrick Payne.
After the Gold Coast I focused my attention to the Inglis Classic Sale to be conducted at the new
Riverside Sales Complex at Warwick Farm. The sale continued on from the Gold Coast with a record
breaking sale at the magnificent new complex. It is a superb facility and congratulations to everyone
associated with the Inglis Company. It is the easiest sales complex I have ever had to get around and
it was hard to believe 800 horses were catalogued for the sale. This is up 200 on last year with these
yearlings having to be sourced from other sales. I was a bit worried when Lot 1 came in and fetched a
lot more than I had anticipated he would.
In any case my fears were quickly put to bed with me purchasing three of the first 16 lots. These
lovely yearlings were by Al Maher, Hinchinbrook and More Than Ready. I finished up with four
from the sale picking up a Rubick filly on the final day. Once again I left the sale very happy with my
purchases. These four head to Patrick Payne, John Thompson, Kris Lees and again to Patrick Payne.
The Classic Sale finished on 13 February and I was off to Tasmania on 14 February for the
Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale to be conducted on 15 February. I knew I had purchased two really
good fillies at the 2017 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale. Given the tight schedule I headed to the
Apple Isle in December to have a look at the yearlings on offer. I knew what I was after and wasn’t
disappointed when I found the full sister to Our long Sali. The mare had done it again producing a
superb filly. It is history now that Our Long Sali was beaten first up in a race run in course record
time and then she blitzed her rivals in the Tasmanian Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic. I
purchased two yearlings from the sale including Our Long Sali’s full sister and a Wordsmith filly out
of Princess Royale for a group of Princess Royale’s owners. Both these fillies head to Stuart Gandy.
On 16 February I was on a plane to Perth for the Perth Magic Millions. I like the Perth Sale and more
to the point it isn’t hard to be attracted to the big stakes money on offer in WA. I found eight
yearlings I liked and had them vetted with seven passing. I managed to secure two beautiful fillies by
Sizzling and Deep Field for reasonable prices. I should have both these on the market later in the
week. These fillies head to Dan Morton and John Thompson.
All in all, it has been a very satisfying sales series. I’m thrilled with what I purchased but these
yearlings don’t just fall into your lap. It takes a lot of hard work and research to find them.
I was at Oaklands yesterday inspecting yearlings but at this stage I am unlikely to purchase any
yearlings at the Premier Sale. I head to Adelaide on Saturday week to start inspections for the
Adelaide Magic Millions Sale. We have purchased some very good horses from this sale including
including Magic Millions feature race winners Husson Eagle, Atalanta Miss, Rose Of Scotland and
Rumeron.
Needs Further / Tycoon Sali filly 2016. A full sister to this year’s Tasmanian Magic Millions
Two Year Old Classic winner OUR LONG SALI!!!
And another photo of her, she’s a cracker!!!
On The Track
We have quite a bit happening over the next few days with some horses competing in good races.
Black And Tan resumes tonight at Moonee Valley and is likely to need the run.
On Saturday we have two nice horses running with Husson Eagle in the Bob Hoysted Stakes at
Flemington and Raido running in the open sprint at Doomben.
Both these horses are in good form and given normal luck should run well. I’ve had a couple of
average rides over the past week and bad gates didn’t help, but that’s the game we are in.
Our main focus will be on Adelaide next weekend where we have Flying Jess running in the CS
Hayes Stakes, Zizzis in the Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Invincible Amici in a
supporting race. Lord Elliott is set to resume at Newcastle next Friday and Our Netbank heads to
Ispswich on Wednesday.
Ongoing Insurance
When you purchase a yearling from Prime Thoroughbreds the horse is insured. Prior to this insurance
expiring you will receive an offer from an insurance company to continue the insurance cover. In the
past we have used Inglis Insurance but I believe their minimum premium fee does not offer good
value for our clients and is too expensive.
I have negotiated an arrangement with Magic Millions Insurance and in future you will receive your
offers from this company at a much more reasonable rate. If any of you are not insured currently and
would like to take up insurance with Magic Millions please call Sara Ryman on 0289131650 to
discuss.
The first offers from Magic Millions Insurance will be for horses purchased at last year’s Adelaide
Magic Millions Sale. These were Addocarr, Almerheri and Nzuri Mwali. I have forwarded the
owners details to Magic Millions insurance. I will arrange vet certificates where required.
Yearlings
I am in the process of contacting the clients who requested information on the yearlings I have
purchased and expect to know exactly where I stand with each yearling promotion by the end of
next week. The level of interest has been very encouraging.
