A quick look at the world of cloning…

Meet Dolly…

… she’s a sheep.

… She’s also a clone.A clone is an individual with exactly the same genetic makeup as another individual.

Dolly was cloned using a method called “somatic

cell nuclear transfer”.

How is this done…?

Take a cell from a donor sheep…

… and an egg from a surrogate.

Exchange the DNA…

The genetic material from the surrogate egg is removed and replaced by the

material from the donor cell.

A jolt of electricity stimulates the egg into dividing, and so an embryo begins to grow.

The new lamb has the same genetic makeup as the sheep that the first cell was taken from.

Dolly’s not alone…Other animals have been cloned too. Tadpoles,

mice, goats, pigs, cows

and cats are among the

list of animals cloned

around the world.
