The tropical rain forest was once known as jungle, a word that comes from the Hindi Jangal which means thick impenetrable forest and bushes around villages. The Amazon basin expands eastward from the northern Andes (Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) to the mouth of the Amazon River. The basin is located between the Guiana and Brazilian shields and it is about 3000 km long and 300 km wide in the eastern part and 600 - 800 km wide in the western region.

The upper Amazon Basin carries in it an impressive biodiversity. The tropical forests cover about 7% of the earth's crust, and yet, it holds around 50% of its species. Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is known to hold up to approximately 493 species of birds, 100 species of mammals, 247 fish species, and 52 species of amphibians and reptiles.
