PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
WE’VE COME TOGETHER
Caregivers, people with early stage of
Alzheimer’s, healthcare providers, academic
and business professionals, government
officials, and community members have all
come together in the fight to take action
against Alzheimer’s disease.
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
WE’VE COME TOGETHER
• Everyone can
prepare Minnesota
for Alzheimer’s
• Alzheimer’s impacts
everyone
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
THE RISE OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
The rise of Alzheimer’s disease in Minnesota
will bring enormous cost and burden to
individuals with the disease,
their families, caregivers, employers,
communities, and the state.
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
• Alzheimer’s is NOT normal aging; it’s a
progressive, fatal, no-fault brain disease.
• There is a new case of Alzheimer’s disease
in the U.S. every 68 seconds.
• Of Americans aged 65 and over, 1 in 8 has
Alzheimer’s, and nearly half of people aged
85 and older have the disease.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE FACTS
• Fewer than 50 percent of people with
Alzheimer’s receive a diagnosis.
• Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death
among the top 10 in America without a
way to prevent, cure, or even slow down
its progression.
• 237,441 Minnesotans caring for someone
with Alzheimer’s in 2011 provided unpaid
care valued at 3.2 billion.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE FACTS
• Without change, the total cost of
care for Americans age 65 and older
with Alzheimer’s disease will
increase five-fold: from $172 billion
to 1.08 trillion, per year.
• In Minnesota alone, these costs
could reach $20 billion, most of
that being Medicaid dollars.

PREPARING MINNESOTA
• Prepare Minnesota for Alzheimer’s
(PMA) 2020 is the first-ever, statewide
collaborative to prepare for the
budgetary, social, and personal impacts
of Alzheimer’s disease by 2020.
• As a result of PMA 2020, Minnesota
could have improved care and support,
and reduced expenses for people with
Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

PREPARING MINNESOTA
We will prepare Minnesota for Alzheimer’s by:
• Increasing early identification of Alzheimer’s disease
and improving ongoing treatment, based on
recommended care practices.
• Sustaining caregivers through access and
navigation of organized information about
supportive services and resources.
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
PREPARING MINNESOTA
We will prepare Minnesota for Alzheimer’s by:
• Equipping and engaging communities in supporting
individuals with the disease and their caregivers.
• Raising awareness and reducing stigma of Alzheimer’s
disease and related dementia.
• Establishing and garnering stakeholder investment in
promising interventions that reduce costs for Alzheimer’s
and related dementias.
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020
PMA 2020
PMA 2020 is organized under a
unique collaborative structure that is
intended to foster collective
ownership and accountability for
furthering its vision.
No single organization owns, funds,
or controls the initiative.

AN URGENT CALL
The rapidly increasing prevalence of
Alzheimer’s in Minnesota is an urgent
call for us to prepare our systems and
