As a new member of the Fayette County Fair Board, Mark Putney has made a signifi cant impact in a short amount of time. He was elected in October 2014 to the board and was the driving force behind getting Eric Paslay and Confederate Railroad to perform at the fair this year. (Chris DeBack photo)

MMark Putney hasnt been with the Fair Board for very long, but that hasnt kept him from making a positive im-pact on the Fayette County Fair. Joining the Fair Board was a natural progression for the Elgin resident, who has been around a fair in some capacity for much of his life. Putney grew up in Gladbrook, graduating from Gladbrook-Rein-beck in 1995. While he was grow-ing up, he and his family traveled all over the country to exhibit at other state fairs, such as Wisconsin and Illinois, as well as any other shows they could fi nd. In fact, I have never missed an Iowa State Fair since the day I was born, because that was some-

had always exhibited at. It was part of my dads upbringing as well, Putney said. Marks father, John, was the founding director of the Blue Rib-bon Foundation, which was tasked by Pioneer Hybrid with raising $2.5 million to help the State Fair buildings that were in disrepair. Pioneer would match $500,000 if they succeeded. A lot of the build-ings were on the National Historic Registry and predated World War I, and they were in serious need of a facelift . As Dad transitioned into that, he looked to bigger corporations to make that seed money to satisfy that challenge so that he could get that matching fund, Putney said. John met that challenge and then worked to get the State on-board with funding the fair. In
order to achieve that, John created a petition through donations to show the Iowa Senate, House, and governor how serious the State was about the fair. What that represented more than the money the money was important was the fact that Iowa loves the Iowa State Fair. Th ey were going to open their pocketbooks to support it, so the State needed to support it as well, Putney ex-plained. Aft er that, John continued on with an infl uential role with the State Fair. He retired in the sum-mer of 2013, but is now on retainer as a consultant. Th e fair named the beef barn aft er John and Emily Putney. Mark, on the other hand, be-gan his work with the State Fair in 1991, doing miscellaneous tasks in the beef barn for his father, the
beef superintendent. It wasnt until aft er he gradu-ated in the summer of 1995 that John gave Mark a special project. In 1993, West Des Moines Water Works was shut down due to his-toric fl ooding, and people grew accustomed to drinking bottled water. During the 1995 Iowa State Fair, the Blue Ribbon Foundation acquired the sole rights to bottled-water sales on the grounds. With the heat during that week of the fair, people didnt mind paying a buck for some good water. All the sales went to the foundation, and it raised a lot of money. Th e college-bound kid was tasked with opening up the seven water bottle stations throughout the fairgrounds by 9 a.m., making sure they remained fully stocked, and breaking them down every
night at 9 p.m. We sold a lot of water thatyear, the State Fair worker ex-plained. It changed very quicklyour thinking of how our operationhad to work, so I learned a lot. Th eneat thing about that is you got tosee the whole fairgrounds multipletimes a day and got to interact withpeople. Th e college student, alongwith a couple of his hardworkingfriends, did that every summer fora couple years. Mark has taken the knowl-edge he gained from working atthe State Fair and applied that tothe Fayette County Fair. With my background andlove for county fairs, I was ap-

proached to run for the board this last year, Putney said. Th ey said, Weneed some help, and we need someone who understands the fair businessand understands the fi nancial parts of running a fair. He was elected in October 2014, and in less than a years time he hasmade a big impact on the fair. Im still learning and I have a lot to learn yet, but I think that is anadvantage because things dont have to be done the same way every year,he said. Sometimes you have to move peoples cheese in order to furtherthe vision. Mark said that he likes to look at the fair from a 50,000-foot level.Th e ground details are important, but if the fi nancially strapped fair isntlooking to the future and fi nding diff erent ways to make money, it willnever get to that higher point. However, the Fair Board member made it very clear that the boardshould never lose sight of who built this fair and who the fair is really allabout: the 4-H and FFA kids and their families. If we lose sight of that, our fair is over and we have failed as a fairboard, he said. Th at is what drives me in decision-making; in orderto make this successful, we have to spark the interest within the youth.Th ats my 50,000-foot view. Th ats where the Grandstand concert comes in. Aft er haggling withseveral options, the Fair Board got as big of a name as they could aff ordwithin their budget, which was Eric Paslay and Confederate Railroad. What I like about [Eric Paslay] and his act is, number one, he is anup-and-comer, but more important, he writes all of his own music. He isa songwriter fi rst and a performer second, and that is kind of how he gothis start, the local farmer explained. Th at takes a special kind of artist, and typically those artists arent the most fl ashy but put on an excellentshow. It is an easy show to watch. Th at is exactly what the Elgin man was seeking for the fi rst big con-cert in a long time. It is about getting people in the door, taking advan-tage of some good facilities, and creating a wider radius of fairgoers thanjust the people in Fayette County. If the fair wants to grow, thats how theFair Board is going to be able to grow it. I looked at diff erent options, Putney closed. I looked at the JonesCounty Fair, and they didnt start with big acts like Tim McGraw. Th eystarted small and grew to that. Th e Fayette County Fair will run Wednesday-Sunday, Aug. 5-9. EricPaslay and Confederate Railroad will headline the Grandstand entertain-ment with gates opening at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Theyre the humble heroes who rise before dawn and battle the elements. They put clothes on our backs and food on our tables. Their genuine values and tireless work ethic are an inspiration to us all ... we salute them.

When you walk in the gate at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union this year, you will more than likely notice some positive changes. Im-provements have been made to buildings, structures, and facilities that should provide a more com-fortable and aesthetically pleasing experience for everyone attending the 162nd Fayette County Fair, Aug 5-9. One vastly improved area you may have already noticed while driving past the fairgrounds is the old tile barn. Used for hous-ing goats, dairy, and beef over the years, it has received a makeover, inside and out. Th e Bethel Gen-erators, a 4-H club with members from Hawkeye, St. Lucas, and El-dorado, raised the money and or-ganized the entire project. New siding, windows, doors, and a steel roof are among the improvements that have been made to the build-ing. Its nice when local commu-nity groups volunteer to do things like this that improve the look and usability of the fairgrounds. I know the board appreciates it, and I am sure that those who bring their livestock to the fair appreciate it as well, said Matt Egan, secretary/treasurer of the Fayette County Fair Board. Th ose who visit the Floral Hall during the fair will notice that it has a new roof. B & B Construc-tion fi nished the roof in early June, putting on new plywood sheeting and asphalt shingles. Th ey were also able to do some strengthening of the entire structure, so that building should

be a little more stable now than it was in the past, added Egan. One unexpected change, but one that fairgoers will also notice almost immediately, is the new Bandstand. Th e original plan was to try to restore the old structure, but when workers began to look into replacing pieces of it, they no-ticed that much of the wood was rotted.
Th e old Bandstand was ac-tually the top part of an older building that used be out at the racetrack. Our new Bandstand will be 6 feet wider than the old one, but not quite as deep. It will also be handicapped-accessible, explained Ryan Sparrgrove, Fair Board president. Dwight and Kathy Maurer and Vaughn and Joann Drewes did
a lot of work cleaning up the old Bandstand aft er it was taken down. Th e new Bandstand was built by Bettmeng Builders and was fi n-ished in mid-July. A ribbon-cut-ting ceremony for the new Band-stand is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 5, just before it hosts the Fay-ette County Fair Queen Contest at 7 p.m. Other changes that fair at-

The old South Tile Barn, used for goats, dairy, and beef livestock at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, was recently renovated by the Bethel Gen-erators 4-H Club. New siding, windows, doors, roof, and support posts are among the improvements that were made to the building.
Construction of a new Bandstand at the fair-grounds began after it was discovered that the old one was rotting and beyond repair. Work-ing on the new structure are (on stage, l-r) Andy Larson and Erik Bettmeng of Bettmeng Builders. Lending a hand with the board is Matt Egan, Fayette County Fair Board secretary/treasurer.
B&B Construction did the improvements on the Floral Hall at the Fayette County

For the Darnall family of West Union, dirt track rac-ing is not just a hobby, it is a way of life. Mike Darnall has raced on nearly every dirt track in northeast Iowa in his fa-miliar 7M car over the past 25-plus years. His biggest fans over that time have been his family, includ-ing wife Kandi and children Rachel and Trey. Now, Mike is the one do-ing the cheering as he has passed the wheel over to his oldest child, daughter Rachel. I have a lot of fun when I am out there. I havent been ner-vous; I just enjoy being out on the track and trying to get better, said Rachel, who at only 15 years old is one of the youngest drivers at the weekly races at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union. It all started last year when Mike mentioned something to Rachel about buying her a race car. I wasnt sure if she would like it or stay interested in it through-out the summer, so we fi xed up an older car and didnt invest too much into it, shared Mike. As the season went on, his daughter found that she loved to go fast. Rachel, who chose to adorn the car with the number 7M that her dad made famous throughout his racing career, currently races in the Hobby Stock class. I felt that this would be the perfect class for her to begin in, explained Mike. I wanted her to be in a full-size car, so she can re-ally learn how to drive and handle a race car. Rachel has been out on the

the track for the 2015 Fayette County Fair races, which are set to takeplace on Friday, Aug. 7. On top of pulling driving duties, Rachel willalso be showing livestock at the fair. She will be showing Herefords andpigs at the county fair, while also participating in many of the other funactivities that are associated with the annual event. From the standpoint of both a father and a crew chief, the sport ofdirt racing has changed immensely since Mike was in his heyday on the track. One of the biggest things that has changed with the sport is thetechnology, Mike pointed out. You used to be able to just take anyold car, put a roll cage in it, and be good to go. Now, everything is soprecise, from the body of the car to the motor and transmission. Of course, with technology comes price. Having the best equip-ment can undoubtedly lead to more wins, but for some it just isnt fea-sible to stick thousands of dollars into a car that races in a class likeHobby Stock. We have a lot of great support and sponsorships to help us get tothe track, said Mike. Without them, it wouldnt be possible to be outthere every Friday night. For Rachel, choosing to follow in her fathers footsteps and racethe same number that can still be seen on bumper stickers of carsthroughout Fayette County, it was a simple choice. Her paint schemewas also an easy choice for her. I wanted the pink numbers so everyone would know that I was agirl, laughed the teen wheelwoman. Rachel plans to keep learning the ins and outs of the FayetteCounty Speedway in her current class. I want to get better in this class, and then, who knows? Maybe Iwill advance to some of the bigger classes, she added. Her father drovein several classes throughout his career, including Hobby Stock, StockCar, Pro Stock, B-Mod, and A-Mod. So far, Mike admits that his daughter is having far more successthan he ever did in his fi rst years of racing. She went out there on the fi rst night and got a fi ft h-place fi nish inthe feature, said Mike. It took me a couple of years to break into thetop fi ve! Rachel, who has been taking in many diff erent racing tips fromher dad, hopes to get her win earlier in her career than her father did. I started racing when I was 16, and it took me 4 years to win myfi rst heat, the proud father admitted. I think Rachel might beat mymark on that one!
Racing has always been a way of life in the Darnall family. Mikes father, Jim, was the fi rst generation of the Darnall family to hit the track. Mike learned a lot of what he knows from his late father and is now passing the knowledge down to his daughter, Rachel. The soon-to-be sophomore at North Fayette Valley elected to keep the familiar 7M number that has become famous on the dirt tracks of northeast Iowa. (Zakary Kriener photo)

Horses are Jalyn Brownells life. At the age of 6, the Westgate native began showing horses at open shows around the state. so successful showing horses, she is no longer allowed to participate in the Showmanship category at the Fayette County Fair, due to competition rules, because she had already won every division before her freshman year of high school! What makes this young horsewoman so competitive at any show she attends is her abil-ity to rein in almost any type of horse. She has shown six horses, One-Eye Annie, Doc, Bailey, Miley Joe, Marshall and Josie, winning at the fair with four of them. Last year alone, Brownell took home
Grand Champion with Marshall and Reserve Champion with Josie. She has been attached to horses since her birth. Her mother, Kristi, showed horses when she was Jalyns age, but she is the fi rst to admit, she was never as devoted to showing as Jalyn has become. However, to this day the horse Kristi showed is still alive and do-ing well on the family farm. My mom and dad supported it, but I just pretty much showed at the county fair and thats about it, Kristi said. I didnt get to go every weekend, and I didnt go to that State Fair, and I didnt have all the
clothes and all the extras. However, Kristi promised herself that if she ever had children who wanted to show, she would make sure they got the opportu-nity. Its an opportunity Jalyn has made the most of. My mom, since she was young, had a horse and we just continued our love, Brownell said. We just decided to start showing, and then we got bigger and bigger at it eventually. I love being with the horses, and it is something I wanted. Not even a broken leg at the age of 4 could keep Brownell off
her horse, and from there, her lovefor the animal has grown. One ofthe biggest reasons she loves show-ing horses over other animals suchas cow or pigs is that she doesnthave to sell them at the end of theshow. I fell off my bike, and Momwas like, You cant ride your horse, and I was like, Yeah, Im ridingmy horse, Brownell explained. Ahorse can be a part of your life thewhole time, and they are always

wanting to be with you. You go to the pasture, and they are the fi rst ones up there to greet you. Th e Brownells dont just do away with a horse once it has outlived its show life. Miley Joe, a horse Jalyn used to show, now spends much of her remaining life in the pasture. Th e family hopes to breed her in order to help with the next crop of horses they wish to raise. Unlike other show animals, these horses are a part of the family. Jalyn will typically spend three to four hours a day with her horses Marshall and Josie. She has morning chores that involve hydrating, feeding, brushing and inspecting the horses to make sure they havent hurt themselves overnight. Once that is taken care of, she warms the horse up, just like an athlete needs to be warmed up before performing, and then rides the horse and practices showmanship techniques. Th e county fair isnt the only place that Jalyn has found success. Th e West Central sophomore has won a number of open shows over her career and done well at the Iowa State Fair. Typically, Jalyn spends three days showing horses at the State Fair before participating in the Cowgirl Queen Contest. Th is past year was the fi rst year she made the fi nals, fi nishing in the top 20; only the top 5 are announced. Over the years, with involvement in the Black Hawk Creek Saddle Club and the North Iowa Saddle Club, her friends have become her competitors, but on the same note her competitors have become her friends. You pick up so many friends and youre a horse show family, just bonding with them all weekend and doing what you love the most, the horse showman said. Brownell hopes to turn her love for horses into a career someday through a little-known job as a horse chiropractor. Planning to attend Iowa State University, she needs to become either a veterinarian or human chiropractor before she can specialize in horses. Just like an athlete, the horses will get sore, Jalyns mom explained. We had a horse that we werent showing, and we worked the horse. Th e chiropractor watches the horse walk, trot and canter, and usually they can see where they are tight or loosely using their joints. It is amazing. Despite the fact that no one typically believes Jalyn when she tells them what she wants to do, she has already picked up a few tricks of the trade. I can see where they are sore and where they are hurting, the future horse chiropractor explained. You can feel it when youre riding them, too. Whether showing, riding or taking part in her morning chores, it is evident from seeing Jalyn Brownell interact with her horses for just a couple minutes that this young lady has found her niche in life.

Reign as queen thoroughly enjoyable experienceBrian Smith
Th e experience of serving as 2014 Fayette County Fair Queen is one of which Jensen Winter has taken full advantage since she re-ceived the title approximately one year ago. Th e responsibilities that go with the honor of wearing the crown and representing Fayette County are many, but as Jensen soon learned, they also provide valuable opportunities as well. I have learned so much from this experience. I have learned the importance of community in-volvement by traveling to several small towns in Fayette County and taking part in some of their events. It made me realize that many of us come from small, close-knit towns and also how important it is to come together as a county, noted the rural Waucoma resident. Competing for the title in her hometown and at the Fayette County Fair was also a learning experience the 18-year-old Turkey Valley graduate appreciated. Win-ter believes that the willingness to take part in activities like this says something about a person. It requires a person to go the extra mile when they run for such an honor, and I think it shows that you care about your community and your county. I understand that this is not something that everyone gets to do, so I am thankful for the opportunities it has given me, Jen-sen explained. Of course, spending a week at the Iowa State Fair Queen com-petition is also a very memorable experience for any young lady who makes it that far. Jensen made cer-tain to gain as much as possible out
2014 Fayette County Fair Queen Jensen Winter of Waucoma thoroughly enjoyed fulfi lling her duties as queen during the past year. Here, she visits with some youngsters in Oelwein while handing out fl iers for an upcoming concert.
of that experience as well. My favorite part of the com-petition at the Iowa State Fair was creating lifelong friends. Each girl was required to go out of her comfort zone and talk to the other contestants, the judges, and all the other people that we encountered during the week. I think every girl left there with several new friends, said Winter. Th roughout the past year, there has been ample opportunity for helping out at various com-munity events. Winter has several memories of participating in a va-riety of activities to show her sup-port for her home county. Some of the activities that stand out for me are helping at the Fayette County Hog Roast, serving at the Pancake Breakfast during fair week, promoting the fair in surrounding towns, selling raffl e and concert tickets, and be-ing in many local parades, related Winter, whose parents, Mark and Nina Winter, own a farm outside of Waucoma. Growing up in a farm fam-ily and being a member of a small community, Jensen knows that hard work and cooperation are an essential part of success. While she did her part in attending nu-merous events to represent Fayette County during the past year, she recognizes the assistance she has received from others, namely the Fayette County Fair Board. Th e board was just amazing in helping me to fulfi ll my duties as queen. Th ey were always there to inform me of my jobs all along the way, so I would like to say a special thank-you to them for everything
they have done for me, said Win-ter appreciatively. As the outgoing queen pre-pares to relinquish her title to the 2015 Fayette County Fair Queen, she has just a few words of wisdom to impart to this years crop of fair queen hopefuls. You hear this being said many
times in competitions like this, but my advice is to just be yourself. If you show your true personality, you will have more fun throughout the whole process. Th is was such a great experience for me, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it all. I wish all of this years queen candidates good luck! exclaimed Jensen.
No matter which lucky girlends up wearing the crown thisyear, there is no doubt that a won-derful opportunity is in store forher as well. Just as Jensen Winterdid, the next queen will have anopportunity to learn, grow, andexperience being a part of Fayette County in a new and unique way.

Enjoy the Fayette
County Fair!
It was a little over two months ago that the Fayette County Fair poultry exhibitors got the bad news. Bird fl u was prevalent and aff ecting fl ocks in Iowa, so on May 21 the Iowa Department of Ag-riculture and Land Stewardship called for the cancellation of Poul-try Shows at county fairs. Th e order was eff ective imme-diately and to last through the end of 2015. However, the local Poultry Show will go on aft er an agreement was made between the Fayette County Fair Board and 4-H Youth Development Committee that no live birds will be present at the events. Instead of the birds being shown live, competitors in Divi-sions B, C, D and E were asked to take numerous photographs of their birds to be submitted for judging. In a letter to exhibitors from Michelle Kelly, county youth co-ordinator, Photos shall include a front view, side view (both sides), back view, open-wing top view, along with a head view of the bird for each class entered. At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Poultry Show will go on as planned. Champions will be crowned, competitors will receive their ribbons, and Showmanship winners will be awarded. However, with no live chickens at the event, children wishing to participate in Showmanship are asked to fi lm themselves putting a bird in a cage and taking it out. Th ey can also include some other handling tech-niques if they wish.
Th e judge, Colt Churchill, will review the tapes during the Show-manship portion and award a win-ner. Churchill is a 21-year-old for-mer 4-Her who grew up showing at the Polk County Fair. He began showing chickens at the age of 6 and has also shown dairy goats and cattle. Churchill began judging three years ago with dairy goats, but this will be the fi rst time he has judged a Poultry Show. He is excited for the oppor-tunity, but isnt thrilled by the cir-cumstances that have virtually tied one hand behind his back. He ex-plained that when judging poultry, one looks for distinct defects and disqualifi cations, which even with numerous camera angles wont be the easiest to spot. It isnt the same, Churchill said. I will be absolutely honest with anybody, it is not the same. Even when you go buy livestock from another breeder, you must, if at all possible, see the animal in person. My philosophy is a picture is worth 1000 words, but seeing the real thing is priceless. Either way, Churchill is up for the challenge, and 4-H members will still get the opportunity to exhibit their animals; even if they wont be on the fairgrounds, the show must go on. If you only get one of that bird, that doesnt show you the whole bird, it only shows one an-gle, Churchill closed. You have to have several angles of this one bird to even make a halfway decent judgment of what that bird looks like.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture cancelled all poultry exhibits at county fairs across the state and the Iowa State Fair, due to an unprece-dented outbreak of avian infl uenza. Photos and fi lmed entries will be submitted instead at this years fair. (fi le photo)
