What is Documentary Photography?

• Documentary photography is a type of photography that captures historical moments or events.

• Documentary photography is a unique type of journalism because all other types of Journalism are in the moment, when they see a story unfolding the photo is snapped and sent off, where as Documentary photography records news over a long period of time.

What has changed in these two images.

This first image was a photo that was taken of a young girl who lost her father in a 15 year old conflict. This photo doesn’t seem to be edited that much and it is just a normal image of a girl who doesn't’t look different to anyone else.

This second image was taken by Jack Harries a young photographer/video maker. You can tell that the photographer has edited this photo. Especially his eyes. This man doesn’t look like every normal person. He looks like he lives in poverty and looks very depressed. So this photo is Enhanced.

How has Documentary photography changed over time.

During the Victorian-era, Documentary photography was a lot harder than it is nowadays, mostly down to the equipment that was available for use. Cameras used to be bulky and noticeable, with slow films, and because of this people used to stop and look at the camera, usually making for a very staged shot
