Welcome to St. Rose
Did you know that the Council Vatican II declared that
“The use of the Latin language, with due respect to
particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites”? At
St. Rose, it is certainly the case. However, you may not
be used to Latin so it will take you some time to get
familiar with the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
We provide you with some brief indications below but
do not hesitate to ask for help. St. Rose Latin Mass
Chaplaincy is a Catholic community established by the
Bishop of Springfield in the fall of 2008.
On Sunday, you may follow Mass with a red booklet
(pews) and a Proper leaflet (vestibule). Hymnals are also
available for Sung Masses (vestibule). On Weekdays,
you need a daily Latin -English Missal to follow Mass.
They are available at Poppe’s (1886 Maine, Quincy).
You may also follow the ordinary with a red booklet.
There are collection or donation envelopes available in
pews and vestibule for visitors. If you wish to receive a
tax receipt or/and be kept informed on the life and
activities of our community at St. Rose, make sure you
give us your name and address. To join the chaplaincy,
call the church office.
On Sunday, please do come to the hall after Mass to
meet the community. Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Chaplain’s Desk: 4th Sunday after Epiphany – Candlemas
On the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
we are celebrating a mystery of Christ's life linked to the
precept of Mosaic Law which prescribed that 40 days
after the birth of their first-born child parents should go
to the Temple of Jerusalem to offer the infant to the Lord
and for the ritual purification of the mother (cf. Ex 13:1-
2, 11-16; Lv 12:1-8).
Mary and Joseph also fulfilled this rite, offering to
comply with the law a couple of turtle doves or pigeons.
In giving a deeper interpretation to these things we
understand that at this moment it is God himself who is
presenting his Only-Begotten Son to humanity through
the words of the elderly Simeon and the Prophetess
Anna.
Simeon, in fact, proclaimed Jesus as the "salvation" of
humanity, a "light" for all the nations and a "sign that is
spoken against", because he would reveal the thoughts of
hearts (cf. Lk 2:29-35). In the East this Feast was called
Hypapante, a feast of encounter. In fact, Simeon and
Anna, who met Jesus in the Temple and recognized him
as the Messiah so long awaited, represent humanity that
encounters its Lord in the Church.
Subsequently, this Feast also spread to the West, where
above all the symbol of light and the procession with
candles which gave rise to the term "Candlemas"
developed. This visible sign is intended to mean that the
Church encounters in faith the One who is "the light of
men" and in order to bring this "light" into the world,
receives him with the full dynamism of her faith.

Church News Sunday, January 30, 2011: 4th Sunday after Epiphany. The
8 am Mass is the Mass of the 4th Sunday. The 11 am Mass is
the External Solemnity of Candlemas. Proper as on
February 2. Coffee & Donuts: Joe & Laura Zanger.
First the candles will be blessed and distributed (at the altar
rail), and then we will process throughout the church with our
lighted candles. The blessed candles should also be held
lighted during the singing of the Gospel and from the Sanctus
to the Communion. Asperges and Prayers at the foot of the
Altar are omitted.
Immediately after the procession, Mass begins with the
incensation of the altar. Processional candles will be provided.
Make sure you do not spill wax… After Mass, you may take
the candles home but please do not take home the plastic
holders. If you wish other candles to be blessed during this
ceremony, please bring them to the sacristy at least 10 minutes
before Mass.
Candlemas is the end of the Christmas celebration and
celebrates the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple, 40 days after
his birth. The procession of candles refers to the words of the
old man Simeon in the Nunc Dimittis (Lk 2) 28 he took him
up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 "Lord, now let
your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for
my eyes have seen your salvation 31 which you have prepared
in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the
Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."
No 7 am Mass this week.
Wednesday, February 2: Feast of the Purification of Our
Lady: Only one Mass at 12:10 pm. No procession. 6:30 pm

pm.
