SeccÓn 2: Informal vs. Formal “You”

• Just like in English, in Spanish, we talk to people differently depending on how we know them

• For example, you call me Sr. Johnson or Mr. Johnson, you call your uncle “Uncle ___”, you call your friend’s parents Mr. Or Ms. ____. You wouldn’t use first names with these people!

• In Spanish, we have a different way of saying “You” for people we want to show respect to.

Formal “You”

You use this “You” when talking to teachers, parents, older relatives, strangers, and anybody older than you or who you want to show respect to.

Informal “You”

You use this “You” when talking to friends, brothers and sisters, people younger than you. If you would call them by their first name, you can usually use “TÚ”
