Program
George Balanchine was one of the 20th century's most prolific choreogra-phers. Styled as the father of American Ballet, he took the standards and technique from his education at the Imperial Ballet School and fused it with other schools of movement that he had adopted during his tenure as a guest choreographer on Broadway and in Hollywood, creating his signature "neoclassical style". He was invited to America in 1933, by Lincoln Kirstein, who shared Balanchine's attitude regarding the importance of high quality dance training in America and together they founded the School of American Ballet, that has since grown into one of the foremost dance academies in the United States and the world, respectively. Along with Kirstein and Jerome
Robbins, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and remained its balletmaster for more than 35 years, alongside Mr. Robbins as co-founding choreographer. He was a choreographer known for his musicality; he expressed music with dance and worked extensively with leading composers of his time like Igor Stravinsky. Mr. Balanchine created 465 works, which have been performed by nearly every ballet company in the world today allowing audiences to delight in his legacy.
Derion Loman started dancing at the age of 19. He graduated with a B.A. and B.F.A. in Psychology and Dance, respectively, from the University of California Santa Barbara. He began his career in Ballet Hispanico’s Second Company, where he performed at a variety of different events - most notably, the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. He went on to join Pilobolus Dance Theatre from 2013-2017. In his time with Pilobolus, he performed works created in collaboration with artists such as: Sidi Larbi, Avshalom Poluk and Imbal Pinto, OKGO, Javier De Frutos, and Penn and Teller. He later went on to tour with Diavolo Architecture in motion, as well as placing in the finals of America’s Got Talent with the company. Most recently, Derion is known for
being a Divisional Finalist on NBC’s World of Dance Season 3, and the 2019 Emmy Awards. Currently, he works as a freelance choreographer with an array of organizations including Google, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and The Los Angeles Dance Film Festival. Derion finds himself to be drawn to projects centered around connectivity, collaboration, and human moments.
Penny Saunders, originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, graduated from the Harid Conservatory in 1995, and began her professional career with The American Repertory Ballet under the direction of Septime Webre. She went on to dance with Ballet Arizona, MOMIX Dance Theater, Cedar Lake Ensemble, and in 2004 she joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In 2011, Saunders won the International Commissioning Project which launched her choreographic career, creating pieces for Hubbard Streets’ main and second company, Cincinnati Ballet, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Whim W’Him, BalletX, Tulsa Ballet 2, Ballet Idaho, SFDanceworks, SALT Contemporary Dance, Neos Dance Theater,
Missouri Contemporary Ballet, Owen Cox Dance Group, among others. Saunders is honored to be the Resident Choreographer at The Grand Rapids Ballet where she recently completed her first full length work, The Happy Prince and Other Wilde Tales, that focused on the life and fairy tales of Oscar Wilde. Saunders has received support from The New York City Ballet Choreographic Commis-sions Initiative, participated in The National Choreographers Initiative. and was the recipient of the 2016 Princess Grace Choreographic Fellowship. In the 2019-20 season, she collaborated with Tulsa Balle, Oklahoma City Ballet, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, The Grand Rapids Ballet, Whim W’Him, BalletX, Dayton Ballet, Diablo Ballet, Ballet Idaho, Indiana University, Seattle Dance Collective, and Point Park University.
Michael Wells, born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, began his formal dance training at Decatur School of Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and later the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He started his career as a trainee with Atlanta Ballet under John McFall, working with choreographers such as Helen Pickett and Wayne McGregor and Twyla Tharp. In New York, he performed with Ballet Hispanico’s second company before joining New York Theatre Ballet, where he danced works by Anthony Tudor, Merce Cunningham, Mathew Neenan, and Nicolo Fonte. With Smuin Ballet, Mr. Wells performed ballets by Amy Seiwert, Garrett Ammon, Michael Smuin and Trey McIntyre. Since joining Diablo Ballet, he has performed in works by Val Caniparoli, Robert Dekkers, Sean Kelly, Sally Streets and the White Swan Pas de Deux from Swan Lake.In February 2020, Mr. Wells premiered his first work for Diablo Ballet entitled Forward Thinking.
