Topic: My alter Ego
Trouble:
Topic: My alter ego Questions Tasks
Trouble 1: What is an
alter ego?
What are some famous
alter egos?
Can anyone have an alter
ego?
What is an alter ego?
Pre task: Ss will expose the knowledge
they already have about alter egos as
the teacher writes (a mind map) on the
board. The class, altogether will come
to a conclusion about the meaning of
“Alter Ego”
Ss will be engaged in a discussion to
reflect upon superpowers, if it's
necessary for an alter ego to have them
or not. Ss will think about Snoop Dog,
Eminem, Madonna, The White Duke
(famous singers’ alter egos)
Task 1:
Ss will watch a video presentation so as
to learn more about Alter Egos and
they'll tick the names of the characters
appearing in the video. They’ll watch the
video one more time if necessary. Ss
will share the information gathered.
Task:
In pairs, Ss will complete a chart with
details about the Alter Egos in the video
presentation.
1
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Task
Game time: Who is who? Ss will form
groups of 4. One member of a group
will describe the superhero or villain in
the card without, saying the name. The
rest of the group members will have to
guess who your classmate is talking
about.
Extra task:
Ss will discuss orally and reflect upon
the fact that comics are not just
American, they can also be Japanese
like Manga, or Argentinian like Super
Hijitus.
Trouble 2: What’s the
importance of
imagining myself in
somebody else’s
shoes?
What does it mean to be
in somebody else’s
shoes? (Aim to reflect
about empathy)
Task:
In pairs Ss will discuss what they would
be like if they had superpowers so as to
place themselves in an alter ego's
shoes. Answers will be shared and Ss
will vote for the most popular ideas.
Ss will write their ideas in your folders
so they can use them in the following
tasks.
Pre Task
Brainstorming:
Ss will imagine what problems they
would solve and share their ideas to
form a mind map.
Task:
2
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
How can I imagine myself
as a different person with
different qualities or
personality?
Can my alter ego be a
villain?
The class divided into 2 groups will
discuss and complete a chart about
possible solutions for the problems
written on the blackboard. One
secretary from each group will copy
their ideas on the blackboard. And they
will rank them according to importance.
Pre Task
Ss will write the best and worst aspects
of their personality in a chart following
the example about the teacher as a
model.
Task
Ss will swap the charts with their
classmate, read and answer if those
characteristics belong to a good
superhero or a supervillain. Then, they'll
share their answers and conclude how
many villains there are in 5to 1ra.
Task.
Ss will discuss orally about the concept
of good and bad, following the example
of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. They will
reflect upon good and bad coexisting
within a person.
Pre Task
The whole class will discuss orally
about superpowers. If it is necessary for
3
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
an alter ego to have them. Ss will
identify alter egos with or without
powers like: Batman, Madonna, Snoop
Dog, Wonder Woman.
Task
Ss will choose some characteristics
from tasksheet 4 to create their own
alter ego and write 3 sentences to
describe it following the description of
the teacher's alter ego as a model.
Then they will invent a name for it.
Task
Ss will draw their alter ego according to
the characteristics they’ve already
chosen. Then everybody shows their
creations including the teacher. Next the
class reflects on the fact that their alter
ego is a superhero or a villain, also on
the importance of doing to good to
others.
Pre Task
Ss will brainstorm and discuss about
superheroes dark past. About sad
events in the past, like the story about
Batman.
Task
Ss will watch a video presentation about
Batman's past so as to join sentences
4
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
about Bruce Wayne and Batman in a
tasksheet.
Trouble 3: Do I get
anything from the fact
that I imagine myself
having an alter ego?
What resolutions can I
get from reflecting about
unreal situations?
[DCLE knowing
processes or techniques
(derived from problem
solving activities)]
Can I grow from the
experience of thinking
about who I could
potentially be?
[DCLE – Intercultural
reflection, respect for
others irrespective of
their age, sex, culture or
any other characteristic
(Ss attitudes towards one
another)]
Pre Task
Ss will brainstorm orally about comics.
The teacher will introduce comics as a
genre and guide a discussion about wh
at comics talk about, famous
characters and themes.
Task
Ss will create their own comic strip,
following Batman's comic as a model.
They will tell a story about solving one of
the problems of their choice already
discussed in class.
Task
“The wallpaper blog” Comic strips will
be displayed on the walls of the
classroom. Walking around the
classroom, Ss will read and comment
on the comics, if they like them, if they
think the alter egos should have acted
differently and suggest possible
solutions. Then Ss will tell which comic
strip is the most interesting one.
Narrative goals:
In this unit we will describe what alter egos are. We are going to identify and interpret famous
cases of alter egos (stories like Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde) comics like (Superman, Spiderman,
5
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Hulk) We are going to produce unreal situations where we are in somebody else's shoes to try to
imagine ourselves being somebody else with different qualities or personality. In order to do so a
comic strip will be created with different characters representing our alter egos and telling a
story. In those comic strips some hypothetical situations with different outcomes will be
described. Then we are going to discuss and share those possible scenarios so as to construct
different hypotheses which will help us reflect about our potential self and our dreams.

Introduction:
Time: 2 minutes aprox.
Hi! My name is Marilu, I’m a student of the teaching training course (Profesorado) at Lenguas
Vivas and I’ll be your teacher during the next couple of weeks as well as after the winter holidays.
I want to thank you all for this opportunity, I’m very happy to be here and I hope you have a great
time with me.
We are going to embark on a project to produce our own comic strip! You’ll have the chance to
express yourselves, be creative. Draw. It’s going to be very entertaining. And of course we are
going to learn a lot. Well, to do so we will have to go step by step so let’s get started!!!
7
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Pre task:
Time: 7 minutes aprox.
Dynamics: The whole class
Resource: Blackboard.
Brainstorming time:
I will draw a mind map on the board and write some names of famous characters such as Hulk,
Mr. Hyde, Batman and I will ask Ss “Do you know any famous superheroes like these ones?”
(They will say Spiderman Wonderwoman, etc) Then I will add Thor, CThru, Fridge, TwoFace
and Super Hijitus and ask “What do they have in common?” (They may say customs, weird
names, superpowers, etc) I would guide them towards the concept of “secret identity” if they
cannot come up with that answer I would say “Aren’t these secret identities?” (Ah yes! I didn’t
know… etc) “Secret identities are also called – and I write in the middle of the mind map – “Alter
egos”
Next I will ask them “Whose secret identities are these? Do you know?” (No/ Yes) And I write the
alter egos’ real names like: Bruce Wayne (Bruno Diaz), Dr Jekyll, Bruce Banner, Hijitus.
Task
Time: 5 to 7 minutes.
Now I ask “What do they look like? What’s their personality like?” While they answer strong,
beautiful, athletic and I translate some of the words they ask me in Spanish, I will also add some
extra details as well like: superhuman strength, super fast.
Extra question: “Do they need to have superpowers or can they be real people? Look at this.”
And I add to the map Snoop Dog, Eminem, Madonna, The White Duke. “Do you know whose
alter egos they are? (No, yes) and I add “Calvin Broadus, Madonna Louise Ciccone, Marshal
Mathers and David Bowie”
“Copy in your folders, please, so we can go back to this information later on”
Blackboard:

Time: 10 to 20 minutes (if video replay)
Video time: 5.34 minutes
Dynamics: Individually.
Resource: My computer , task sheet and blackboard.
Video (uploaded in Google Drive)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLV2Q1SXBQWXBZNzA/edit?usp=sharing
I will tell Ss “Now we will watch a video presentation so as to learn more about “Alter Egos” but to
do so we need to use a handout.” I hand the task sheets out. “It says ‘Tick the alter egos that
appear in the video’ Is it clear?” (Yes, If not: Can anybody explain what the instruction says? 1
student explains to the class) “So let’s check the alter egos that appear on the video”
Task sheet: (Task sheet n°1)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLOWFBa3FMbkNYNG8/edit?usp=sharing
Batman ____
Hulk ____
Super Hijitus ____

Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
TwoFace ___
Wonder woman ____
Etc.
So next I play the video and while they are watching I write the same names from the task sheet
on the blackboard. “So let’s share what you have, one at a time please” and I tick the names on
the board as well.
Task
Time: 10 – 15 minutes.
Pair work.
Resource: task sheet
“Now, in pairs, let’s complete the following chart with everything that you remember we’ve been
talking about. Let’s put all the information together”
Once they have finished, we are going to watch the video again. “Now, let’s watch the video
again and I’m going to pause it so we correct the exercise altogether, yes?”

Superman Superhuman strength Volunteers to help humans,
he is responsible.
Spiderman Shoots spider webs. Has
arachnid abilities.

Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Time: 5 to 7 minutes
Language focus:
Resource: blackboard.
I will explain “The words we used to describe alter egos are adjectives” I will write on the board
new adjectives like (impulsive, awesome, sarcastic, scary, etc) and say “Which character can I
describe with these adjectives? (Batman! Superman! Ironman! Etc) Continue completing the
chart with these words”
Blackboard:
Task
Time: 10 to 15 minutes.
Game time: Who is who?
Resource: cards with pictures.
“Let’s get together in groups of 4 and play a game”
With a card in my hand I will explain “This is the game Who is who? One member of the group
will describe the superhero or villain in the card without, without, saying the name. The rest ofthe group members will have to guess who your classmate is talking about. For example, you
guess: (I describe my card) He comes from a different planet, he is tall, has brown hair, wears a
11
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
red and blue custom, he can fly and his weakness is kryptonite!” (spiderman!, hulk!, no idea!
superman!) Good. Let’s play! (And I hand the cards out)
Cards: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLeld3b1ZoYnVFQms/edit?usp=sharing
Task (optional information)
Time: 10 minutes.
Extra question: Do you know that there is a famous alter ego in Japanese Manga? Yes, his name
is Ichigo Kurosaki and his alter ego is Hollow Ichigo. Let me show you a picture. So you see that
alter egos are not necessarily cartoons like Superman but can also be Manga. If you like Manga I
recommend you to Google him”
TaskTime: 5 minutes + 7 minutes (discussion) + 5 minutes to vote.
Dynamics: Individually.
Resources: blackboard
I will say to Ss “Let’s pretend we are Batman, Superman or any other alter ego that we’ve been
talking about” Once they place themselves in their shoes I will ask them “Can you discuss with
your partner next to you (and I just write the following question on the board) “What would you be
like if you had superpowers?” When they finish, I say “Let’s share your answers, which idea is
the most popular?” (While Ss share their answers I write the concepts on the blackboard.) “Let’s
vote”
Blackboard:
12
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Task
Time: 5 minutes.
Dynamics: Pair work
“Now, in pairs, write your ideas like the example on the board”
Blackboard:
Time: 10 minutes
13
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Language Focus:
“Now, take a look at this word… does it sound familiar? (I circle the word If) (Ss may be aware
of this because they have been working with the 1st conditional) I Ss do not remember, which
may probably happen, I will write on top of the example a sentence in the 1st conditional.
Blackboard:
“Let’s compare the two sentences, can this happen in real life? (I point to the 1st example) (Yes,
no, I don’t know) and this one? (I point to the 2nd example) (Yes, no, I don’t know)”
“So the most common use for the 1st conditional is to talk about real situations, , and the 2nd
conditional for unreal situations – like the ones on the blackboard”
Time: 7 to 10 minutes.
Language practice
“Let’s make sure we understand. Read the sentences in the task sheet and identify if they are
first or second conditional, ok?” (I hand the photocopies out)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLRS1TSUk1ZHVoVW8/edit?usp=sharing
When finished, we check.
Time: 10 minutes
14
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Pre task:
Dynamics: All the class
Brainstorming:
I will draw a mind map and say “So… let’s imagine we are living a superhero’s life (and I write the
title) ‘What kind of problems would you solve?’ For example, (and I write in the mind map) in your
school, your neighbourhood... Where else? (I don’t know, Argentina!, our country!, on the
streets!) Ok and what type of problems? (floods! Insecurity!, robbery! – I can also translate
some of the answers from Spanish to English) Copy the mind map in your folders please.
Blackboard:
Time: 10 minutes.
Task
Dynamics: 2 big groups.
“Now let’s form 2 big groups: you 7 and you 8. You will complete the chart while you discuss
possible solutions for the problems on the blackboard, ok? (I hand out the task sheets) Followthe example as a model.”

Alter Egos solving problems
Possible scenarios:
Example: We would clean the city to prevent floods.
Time: 5 to 7 minutes.
When they finish I erase the board and divide it into 2 sections.
“I need one secretary from each group to copy your ideas in the blackboard. Thank you.” And
orally: “Which one do you think is the most important problem? Then?” and we rank according to
importance.
Time: 5, 7 minutes.
Pre Task
Dynamics: Individually
I will hand out a new task sheet (n° 5) and ask them to read the example about myself. “Read the
chart and take some minutes to think about yourselves to write the best and worst aspects of
your personality – like the example about me” (supposedly they would be using the vocabulary
learnt from the previous exercise or ask me to translate some words).
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLbWMtYi04SHZZRnM/edit?usp=sharing
The best of me The worst of me
16
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Time: 5 minutes
Task
Dynamics: Pair work
I will ask Ss to swap charts with the classmate sitting next to them “Let’s do the following, give
your chart to your classmate like this (do the gesture with my hands while I say) you “swap” it. “
“Now read your classmate’s chart and answer (and I write the question on the board) Are these
characteristics of a good superhero or a supervillain?” Then we share our answers. “Let’s start
with my description, am I a superhero or a supervillain? What do you think? (the class gives their
opinion about me) And what about your answers? How many villains do we have in 5to 1ra?”
Time: 5 minutes.
Task
Dynamics: All the class. Discussed orally.
Then, I’ll comment “Remember from the video Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde? (and I show a picture
from my computer so they can remember) Was he good or bad? Can we say that good and bad
can coexist within one person? What do you think?
Time: 5 to 7 minutes maximum
Pre Task
Dynamics: All the class. Discussed orally.
Resources: Blackboard.
I ask the class “Is it necessary for an alter ego to have powers?” And I write on the board names
like Batman, Madonna, Snoop Dog, Wonder Woman. “Which alter egos have superpowers?”
(Not all of them)
Blackboard:
17
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Time: 10 minutes, 15 minutes max.
Task
Dynamics: Individually
“Going back to the personality chart (task sheet n° 5) let’s choose some characteristics to create
our own alter ego and write 3 sentences (or more, optional) describing our alter ego. (I hand out
a new task sheet n° 6) But first I want to share my alter ego description, “Marilu’s alter ego” you
can read with me.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLMHg3ZE9oT2R2eXc/edit?usp=sharing
When finished, I will ask Ss “What’s the name of your alter ego”? Write the name as a title of
your text.
Time: 5 minutes.
Then “Let’s share what you just wrote. The name of my alter ego is ‘Mali Boo’ – not Stacy Malibu
like The Simpsons…. (haha) What about yours?” (And the Ss read their texts)
I keep all the task sheets to myself.
18
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Time: 30 minutes (if I include drafting, maybe less, maybe more)
Task
Dynamics: Individually
Resources: Ss’ colour pencils and markers
Art attack: I will ask Ss to draw their alter ego according to the characteristics they’ve already
chosen.
I show my alter ego’s drawing. And I describe her.
When Ss finish I will ask Ss to show their pictures to eh rest of the class and say “Is your alter
ego a superhero or a supervillain? Or both?, Are you in favour of doing good to others? (Yes No)
Is it important for you? (Yes, no)
Video watching
Pre Task
Time: 5 minutes – to 7.
(I write a chart in one half of the board and explain)
“Do you know that superheroes have a dark past? A past full of sadness and they want to make
justice. To do that, they create a secret identity, an alter ego, and they fight crime, protect the
citizens and solve problems in their neighbourhood.
“For example, do you know any superhero, superheroine or supervillain whose past is full of sad
19
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
events? (No, I don’t know, Spiderman, (more or less, he has a sad present rather than past...
nothing happened when he was a child) Wonder Woman! (hmmmm nope...) Batman (Yes!)
If Ss do not answer Batman I will ask “Do you know Batman’s story?” (Yes, no)
Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman. (and I write a chart on the other side of the board).
“Well, instead of telling you the story let me show you” And I play the video.
Blackboard:
Task
Dynamics: Individually.
Time: 15 minutes aprox (including video replay)
Video: 4.39 minutes
Resource: My computer , task sheet and blackboard.
Video (uploaded in Google Drive)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLT0thSGlHbEtVcDg/edit?usp=sharing
“Now we’ll watch a video presentation so we can match the sentences about his past” (and I
hand out a new task sheet n° 7)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLU0hiakllWFY2b2s/edit?usp=sharing
20
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
We check the answers all together.
Time: 7 to 10 minutes.
Language Focus
Dynamics: Individually
“Let’s do the following, do you see the pictures here? (I show them task sheet n° 8) they are
pictures representing Batman’s story. Please put the words in order to make sentences which
explain the picture”
For example, let’s try this one together: Let’s put the words in order to make a sentence.
21
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
The answer is “Superman had lived on the planet Krypton before his parents sent him to Earth to
save him.”
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLSC1NWlNxNHRaNDQ/edit?usp=sharing
And we check.
"So let's read the sentences again, do you see that there are 2 actions described in each
sentences, yes? Well one action happened before the other. Can you tell me which one?" (uhhh
it's very difficult/ I don't know!/ Ok)
The first one: what happened first? "Bruce Wayne's parents had been to a concert" and then?
"before they were murdered" and the second? "he had had nightmares about bats" and then?
"Bruce became Batman" and the third? "He had never been a superhero" and then? "he became
The Batman" Very Good!
"So you see? We have 2 actions in the past. The most recent event in the past is in the Past
Simple (like "Bruce became Batman") and the event that happened before is in the Past Perfect.
(like "he had had nightmares about bats")"
Pre Task
Time: 5 minutes.
Resources: Original comic strip. (realia)
Introducing Comics as a genre
Dynamics: All the class. Discussion Orally.
“By the way, what does the photocopy look like? (I point at the comic strip) (I don’t know, silence,
a comic book, a comic strip). Look at this one (I show a real comic) does it look like Batma’s
comic strip? (Yes!) Good, do you read comics? (No, Yes) Which ones? (Superman, Manga,
Xmen) What do comics tell? (I don’t know, a story) Yes, a story. And generally what are these
stories about? (Love, death, fighting, fights, crime) They are about solving problems, right? Or
22
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
protecting the city from the enemies…”
Time: 5 to 7 minutes
Language Focus Analysis.
Dynamics: All the class. Discussion orally.
“Comics also have flashbacks. Do you know what a flashback is? (Yes, no) A flashback tells avery important event that had happened before something else happened. Like the example
about Batman. Read the photocopy again. Can we use the Past Perfect in a Flashback? (Yes,
no)
Check the example on the board.
Can you copy from the blackboard please?
So “He had nightmares about bats” This is the Past Perfect (I circle “had had”) And below the
example I write.
This is the rule: “Can you help me? Let’s do it together, what comes first?”
Affirmative: “Past Perfect: Subject + had (the auxiliary) + vb in the “past participle” (the famous
“3rd column than you can find anywhere, in a book, on the internet)
Negative: Subject + had not/ hadn’t + vb in the past participle.
23
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
And questions: Had + Subject + vb in the past participle + ?
Time: 30 minutes (including drafting)
Task
Dynamics: Individually
“What if we create our own comic like the one we saw about Batman?” I give back the tasksheet with their alter egos and a new one with empty comic frames (task sheet n° 9)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmReAlCmzLM1dtUUJGcHFJM2s/edit?usp=sharing
Comic Strip:
Time: (thinking, choosing the problem 7 minutes aprox)
So I tell Ss to pick/choose a problem and a possible solution, like the ones we did before (task
sheet n° 4 “Alter egos solving problems”) “Draw your alter ego telling that story (solving the
problem). You can draw as many characters as you need.”
While they work I monitor and guide them in case they need help (since Ss have different levels)
Time: 30 minutes aprox.
24
Rodríguez María Lucía Metodología de las Lenguas Extranjeras2013
Task
Dynamics: Group work
“The wallpaper blog” I will stick some cardboards on the walls and I will ask Ss for their comics
and stick them on those cardboards – including my own comic strip. Then I will ask Ss to stand
up and start walking around the classroom to read their classmates comic strips.
“Read your classmates comics and write (with some colour pencils that I’ll provide) if you like the
story told or if you think the alter ego should have acted differently and suggest possible
solutions”.
Once everybody is finished, we will vote for the most interesting one. We congratulate the winner
with a huge round of applause for his/her hard work.
