A Pinewood PTA Publication
Principally speaking...
Welcome back to school. We look forward to seeing you and your children on campus very soon. This year brings great opportunities for learning. We look forward to continuing our work this year to ensure success for all students. I would like to welcome our two new assistant principals. Mrs. Cristina Smith joins us from the Title 1 department where she has been working with families, teachers, and students as a Title III & ELL Language and Literacy Liaison with the Martin Family Language Involvement Program. Ms. Patty Morris joins us from Murray Middle School where she has been working with teachers and students as a reading coach. If you have the opportunity, take a few minutes to introduce yourself to them at our Meet the Teacher event on Thursday, August 12th. We are glad to have them here at PWE. Consider joining our PTA! The Pinewood PTA supports the students and teachers throughout the year and sponsors many fun school-wide vents. There is a membership form you can fill out in this newsletter. Thank you PTA for your support. It is going to be another great year at PWE. Sincerely, Jennifer Radcliff

Welcome back Panthers!
We realize how important your children are to you and that you want the best for them. PWE PTA strives to bring together the parents, school staff, students and the community to share thoughts and ideas about programs and activities that benefit children and families. Our PTA provides information and resources through the school website, newsletter, family programs, parent meetings, Facebook and other communication channels.
PWE PTA has two major fundraisers during the year: Square One Art Walk-A-Thon
Some of the programs that the PWE PTA sponsors:
All Pro Dads Family Fun Game Night
Spring Dance Family Bingo Night
PTA works hard all year to get parents involved, provide fun family events, bring character and educational programs to our kids and support to our teachers and staff. We can only do this with your support. We welcome your ideas and suggestions and look forward to working with you during the 2016-2017 school year!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORT (PBIS)
PBIS would like to welcome everyone back to school and welcome all new comers to PWE. We hope you had a wonderful, restful summer! It’s time to get back to our school routines and that means setting expectations for the school year. Here at Pinewood Elementary, our PBIS slogan is “Every panther matters so be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and POSITIVE.” In order to facilitate a smooth transition back to school, we recommend you use the same expectations at home to reinforce what is being taught at school. When the school and our families are all using the same expectations and language then we provide much needed consistency for our children. Consider praising your child for things he or she does that are respectful, responsible, safe, and positive. Discuss what each of these expectations means and how they can meet expectations at home and at school.
We look forward to a fun year full of exciting reward events and activities! Thank you for your support!
ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS
Our Pinewood PTA would love to help promote your business. We are seeking businesses that would like to contribute to our students, faculty and parents’ growth within the school. There are so many ways to help out, whether it be a monetary donation to assist the cost of a school event, an auction
basket or gift cards, we are seeking all items small or large. All donations are tax-deductible and your business will be promoted through our school newsletter, event(s) where these donations benefit and much more. If this is something that would interest you or someone you know, please feel free to contact our PTA Business Liaison, Megan Cathcart at cathcartcrew@gmail.com. Thank you and we look forward to a successful school year.

First Day of School
We are excited about the upcoming 2016-2017 school year! The first couple of days of school can be very hectic. We request that you send your child to school
the same way on the first day that they normally would. In other words, if they are a bus rider, please let them ride the bus the first day.
In addition, we do not allow parents to walk their child(ren) to the classroom on the first day. The only exception will be kindergarten parents. We will allow kindergarten parents to walk their child to class on the first day only. We will have safety patrols and staff members
throughout the campus assisting children. During the Meet the teacher event, it is a great idea to take a “dry run” with your child to the cafeteria and their classroom so that they know where to go.
MORNING HOLDING AREAS Students arriving before 7:30am will report to the following areas:
Cafeteria –Kindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade & any student eating breakfast
Music Room – Second Grade
Science & Art Room – Fourth Grade
Covered Play Area – Fifth Grade
All students are encouraged to take advantage of PWE’s “No Cost” breakfast. If your student(s) chooses to eat breakfast upon arrival, he/she should go directly to the cafeteria. After eating,
he/she should report to the designated areas listed above.
