Brian Dupont

My practice is a study of how text and language interact with the process and material of

painting. I prefer to approach the texts obliquely, working with fragments, names, lists, or even

codes and numbers, so that any referential content is not foregrounded and didactic, but rather

there only to be excavated with careful looking. I do not want the work to be merely read (which

I feel ends any engagement too quickly), and to that end the legibility that is reinforced by the

use of stencils is contradicted by the erasure, layering, and shifts in scale and kerning of the

painting process. Where in a traditional 2D painting the layers of marks and color must resolve

on a single plane, painting on 3D supports of structural aluminum allow me to further expand

the possibilities of the painting as a carrier of information; all of the sides cannot be viewed

simultaneously, and the complete painting can only be comprehended as an abstract

construction.

Suzanne Levy

My current body of work is inspired by the delicate balance between order and chaos in

each of our lives. This idea is produced spontaneously as I work, with intuition guiding me. I free

myself from the constraints of reason and rely on my inner rhythm to achieve balance. My work

consists of related images that grow from one another. Each painting is created using shapes,

both spherical and linear, that are manipulated and presented from multiple vantage points.

Shapes are stretched, repeated, overlapped and layered. Using tools such as palette knives,

brushes, rags, and print blocks, a concept is conceived on canvas and using sweeping motion

and tightly executed details.

Within a nonrepresentational image, I am concerned with color, texture and the

enlivenment of the entire picture, intending to create a visual experience of discovery that draws

the viewer into and around a varied surface. I enjoy expressing with color--sometimes subdued

and sometimes lively. The marks, shapes and forms in the art can also be subtle or strongly

defined creating a range of feeling and atmosphere. There is no preconceived idea of the

finished piece. The final image evolves and emerges over time through the building up of layers

and texture with collage and adding of color, line, and form with paint. The layers and

overlapping create depth, forming relationships and texture. Color unifies, clarifies, balances and

organizes the work. Each artwork is an individual journey that has its own visual story to tell.
