Turning day to night

Artist tend to visualize night with bluish tones

Nights are darker and colors are less saturated

Color balance -> turn up the blues

Curve – turn down the midtones

Hue/saturation -> turn down the saturation and lightness

Turning day to night

Adjustment layer – color lookup

NightFromDay

Effects - snow You may use brushes

Or

Add new layer

Paint it white

Set layer mode to dissolve, opacity to 1 %

Turn off all other layers

Copy merge white dissolved layer and paste it to the same image

Turn off the dissolved layer, use new

Effect - snow

Select small portion of

that layer

Layer via copy (turn off

the old layer, use new

one)

Drag it to cover whole

image

Effect - snow

Use blur->motion blur

to set angle to snow.

Use small distance

Usually snow as many

„layers“

Larger snowflakes con

foreground

Smaller at the back

Use multiply layers

Effects - rain

New layer, fill with black

Filter->Noise->Add noise

Effects - rain

Filter>Blur->Gaussian blur (3px)

Image adjustments->Levels

It looks like snow

Effects - rain

Use Filter->Blur-Motion blur to make it look like rain

Effects - rain

Set layer mode to screen

Use curve adjustment to control the amount of rain

Effect - rain

Or paint raindrop yourself (define brush) and use brush

settings

Foreground rain is more sparse

Background rain is more dense

Effect - rain

Combining them together

Effects - rain

Usually, when rain hits some edges, there are some

„rain-sparkles“ and glow

Paint „glow“ with round brush

Use round brush and jitter settings

for sparkles

Effects- rain

Frost

Using color adjustment and masking

Settings depend on image

First channel mixer

Use monochrome

Frost

Set that channel mixer to „lighten“ layer mode

Before After

Frost

Now we use mask to make the effect visible only on

some areas (plants, ground, roofs usually)

Then add levels adjustment layer

Make image brighter -> the air is lighter when it is really

cold

Frost

Selective colors -> Green

Turn down yellows

Turn cyan up

Mask it

Use only on plants

Frost

Repeat step with channel mixer

Mask it

Frost

Use frost texture on windows

Mask it so that is only visible at the sides of window

frame’s

Use overlay or screen layer mode (or both with lower

opacity settings)

Blending

Make things fit together

Blending

First step:

Add new layer, make it a clipping mask

(right click at the back of the layer to

open options)

Paint highlights with soft light

Add new layer, clipping mask, paint

shadows, layer mode to multiply

Adjust layers’ opacities

If required also use adjustment layers

(hue/saturation, colors)

Blending Select base layer and all added layers (shadows,

highlights, adjustment layers)

Right click and duplicate them all

Then, right click and merge selected layers

Move new layerbehind the original

Filter->Blur->Gaussian blur (few pixels)

Blending

Paint shadows behind the object

Blending

Another option

When all is done -> Merge visible/Flatten Image

Blur tool

Blending

Using the „blur tool“ work over the edges

Candlelight

We have candles and now we make them glow

Same trick works with other things (fireplaces etc)

Candlelight

Add a new layer

Take warm yellow

Paint big glow behind (if in different layers) the candle

Set layer mode to soft light

Candlelight

Add new layer

Paint smaller glow with warm yellow/white

Set layer mode to overlay

Candlelight

Add new layer

Fill it with black

Filter->Render->Lens Flare

Scale down. Set layer mode to screen

Duplicate it.

Those are going

to be the flames
