professional and higher quality

• They have many other types of prints, such as canvas or metal

•Most offer some types of discount on first order except for Costco

Canvas Prints•Costco www.CostcoPhotoCenter.com

• 16X20 $37.99

•Canvas Discount www.canvasdiscount.com• 16X20 $24.80 • A few local photographers use this site and are happy with

them

Printing at Home• Your choices: Canon or Epson

• Other printer manufacturers are limited on paper choices and unable to get the International Color Consortium (ICC)

profile for your printer-paper combination

Terminology•An ICC profile is a data set that makes sure your monitor calibration and printer ink/paper combination work in the same color space

•“Out of Gamut” means the printer ink/paper combination is unable to print all the colors that are show on your monitor

Cost of Printers•Epson P400 $539 • Works only off Wi-Fi and can be difficult to set up

•Epson P600 $673•Canon Pro 100 (dye) $271•Canon Pro 10 (pigment) $398•These Amazon prices may already include rebates• Always wait for printer rebates • Sometimes Canon almost gives away a printer with a

camera/lens purchase

Both are very good printer brands

• Canon and Epson printers use different technologies on how ink is sent from the cartridge to the paper surface.

• In the past Epson printers were notorious for clogging the nozzles if the printer was not used every week. • They have improved but

there are still some issues

Another choice to make is ink

type

Two Ink Types•Dye

• Cheaper• Does not last as long but still lasts 50+ years if not exposed to

UV light

•Pigment• Costs more and lasts longer, possibly 100-200 years• Much better for black & white prints as it has a deeper black • Produces prints similar to the silver gelatin photos of the past

Estimated Cost of Ink per Printer•Epson P600 for a color 8X10: $1.02

•Canon Pro 10 for a color 8X10: $1.10

•Canon Pro 100 dye: $.88

•Black & White-only print is slightly less

•Need to add cost of paper, i.e., Red River Gloss paper, medium weight, 8.5X11 $.62• For example total cost for Canon Pro 100 print

$1.50 with paper and ink

Last choice to make is paper or media type

Paper Types•Fiber/Cellulose papers • Most like darkroom from the past • Offer the most surface choices • Some offer the brightest whites • Also resin-coated (RC) papers

•Rag/Cotton papers • The most archival and mostly used in fine art printing• They must be brushed on both paper sides before

printing as they can contain cotton particles which can cause printer problems

Gram per Square Meter (GSM)•GSM is a surface density measurement unit used to

measure density or thickness of paper

•GSM will be listed on printing products purchased • Office paper is 60-80 GSM • Some economy papers will have a 150-200 GSM • The better quality papers will have a 250 or higher GSM

Advantage of Printing Yourself• You can quickly make corrections and reprint

• Seeing the results in print will improve your photography

• You will have options from many paper manufacturersonpaper base color and surface types

• ICC profiles are available for printer model and the different papers for consistent results

Printing is a Skill•You will need to work at it

•You will need to try sample packs to find out what type of paper you like for your style

•You should create and use a template for each paper type to see what looks best and to see if any of the colors are out of gamut

Questions

February PrintCompetition

• The primary objective of the club’s print competition is EDUCATION. It is meant for the members to learn what makes a good versus great photograph in order that they may improve their own work

The Subject is “People”

•A person or a small group of people should be the primary subject of your photograph

What is a People Photograph?• Although there are people in

this image, it would not qualify for the competition as the people are not the primary subject

• The primary subject instead is the museum or the collection of antiquities

People Photos

More People Photos

• Avoid something like this image as we are more into the arts

• This is more like documenting an event

Not a Preferred People Photo

Competition Rules• Members are to present one 8x10 or 8x12 matted photo

• Photo may be mounted on a single matte board (flush mounted) or mounted to a matte board with a single window opening

• Easiest way to mount the print is using the T-hinge method and there are plenty of online videos that will show you how to do this

• A digital copy of the photo is to be emailed to Ray Raspino by the Thursday before the February meeting date

• Names of submitters will be kept anonymous from the critiquing and judging process

• Disqualifications• Names or signatures on the front of the photograph

• No framed prints

Competition Rules (cont.)• Put your name and title of photograph on the back of the photograph

• Although the meeting starts at 7p.m., members should arrive at least

15 minutes early to check in and be assigned a number

• There will be three experience levels: Beginner, Amateur

(Intermediate) and Advanced

• If you have won first place in a previous competition, then you

advance to the next level

• If you do not know what level you are, email Jack or Katrina or check the list

Awards• 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each of the three experience levels

• Best in Show selected from the three 1st place winners

12 Areas to Consider1.) Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.

2.) Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Retouching, manipulation, sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting, and correct color are some items that speak to the qualities of the physical print.

3.) Creativity is the original, fresh, and external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought.

4.) Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds.

12 Areas to Consider (cont.)5.) Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker.

6.) Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used, either physical or digital, should support and enhance the image, not distract from it.

7.) Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect.

8.) Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest.

12 Areas to Consider (cont.)9.) Lighting —the use and control of light—refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is manmade or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image.

10.) Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image.

11.) Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, capture, presentation media, and more are part of the technique applied to an image

12.) Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image
