The Philippines, located in Southeast Asia, consists of 7,107 islands in three main groups: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.The capital is Manila, which is part of the National Capital Region. To the north of the Philippines lies Taiwan; to the west acrossthe South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) is Viet Nam; to the southwest lies Malaysia across the Sulu Sea; to the south theCelebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; and to the east is the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific Ringof Fire and closeness to the equator makes the country prone to earthquake, typhoons and volcanic activity.
