Cycliststargeted onmountainTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
CYCLISTS are being warned to not ridealone following the second mugging inci-dent on Table Mountain this month.
Merle Collins, spokesperson for TableMountain National Parks, says cyclistPatrick O’Brien was mugged near King’sBlockhouse by two men while cycling on Fri-day morning.Collins points out this is the second such
incident in the area since the start of the year.“When Table Mountain National Parks ar-
rived on the scene, O’Brien had been roughedup and was traumatised. This is a concern asthere was no reason for the level of aggrava-tion shown,” she adds. The attackers tookO’Brien’s cellphone and
cash before fleeing the scene, Collins says. She confirms that a cellphone was also tak-
en from the first victim, cyclistGrahamRede-linghuys.Redelinghuys was mugged earlier this
month by two men at the same location.Collins says although they cannot say
whether the same people are responsible, they are working with the police to try andapprehend those responsible.“The only way for us to prevent these mug-
ging is by apprehending the people responsi-ble.”She adds: “Most of the Table Mountain Na-
tional Park is an open access park and hasno fencing. People like the fact that they canget out of their cars and enter the park.”Collins, however, points out that this
makes most areas of the park vulnerable andan easy target for those looking to do othersharm.
“We would be really grateful for people tolay a charge at a police station.Whenwehavea detailed report and identikits we can workfrom that,” she says. When asked whether a case has been re-
ported, SergeantHiltonMalila, spokespersonfor Woodstock Police Station, says no casehad been reported over the weekend.Collins says Table Mountain National
Parks is always exercising preventativemeasures and regularly perform patrols andsearches. She says: “We are investigating escape
routes and possible spots where people couldhide out. The dogs are brought in to sniffwhere people could be hiding out.”Although Table Mountain National Park
and police are working together to try andprevent future muggings, Collins is askingcyclists to be very aware of their surround-ings.“We would like to warn any cyclists or jog-
gers to make sure they are not riding alone,”says Collins.“If you look around you should at least see
another cyclists in the distance. Do not cyclewhere it is desertedandcarry less valuables.”
. InOctober, thewebsite ClimbZAwarnedcyclists and runners “in the Blockhouse/Rhodes Memorial area to be on the lookoutfor a menacing group of youths who are notafraid to confront and harass people”.In January 2011, a media website reported
on cyclist Ian Mackie who was “repeatedlystabbed by two assailants above Rhodes Me-morial”.The attack on Mackie occurred “in broad
daylight”.Climb ZA said there were 11 attacks on cy-
clists and runners in 2011.

Yummy food for thoughtTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
You are what you eat.
For years people have been obsessed withphrases such as “healthy body, healthymind”, and it’s true, says a dietitian.
What children eat have a major impact ontheir brain. “Your brain is dependent on anormal blood sugar level, so any people orchildren with low or high blood sugar cannotconcentrate properly. Therefore it is of ut-most importance to eat regularly to help keepyour blood sugar at a normal level,” says die-titian Magdalene Pieters.
And, saysPieters, youdon’t need expensiveor exclusive foods to achieve this. A healthycombination of food groups in either a mealor snack will suffice.
Brain boosting foods do not have to burna hole in your pocket, but, more importantly,Pieters says, the best thing to do is to avoidfoods that affect the brain negatively. FocusInstead on foods that are beneficial to thebrain.
“It has nothing to do with affordability andmore to do with trying to eat natural foods, the way nature intended us to eat,” she says.
When looking at food you need to decide isthis natural, wholesome and healthy or if itis only the nice tasting part of a natural food
like sugar, oil, fat, cream and white refinedstarch.
A good guideline is to try and avoid foodsthat are dyed, changed or fried.
Certain foods, such as fried foods, sweets, sugar and sweetened cooldrinks, have a nega-tive impact on the brain. “Bought fried fastfoods are the worst because the oil might beboiling formanyhours. Trans fats replace thegood essential Omega-3 fats in the brain, andmay cause Attention Deficit Disorder andmood disorders like depression because of alack of Omega-3 fatty acids,” says Pieters.
“Fried fast foods are one of the reasons somany young people feel depressed thesedays.”
Sugar is digested very quickly and spikesblood sugar levels. According to Pieters a lotof insulin must be secreted to lower the bloodsugar again.
“A child with a high blood sugar will notfeel full of energy, like most people think. They will feel drowsy and tired. If their sugardrops too low after the spike they will feelnervous, edgy and jittery. They won’t be ableto sit still, can’t concentrate and everythingaround them will draw their attention awayfrom their work,” she says.
Water with a meal that combines protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and healthy fat isvery good at empowering the brain.
Pieters says children should beencouraged to drink water when-ever they feel thirsty or hungry.
“A dehydrated body and braincannot function properly andsometimes children get over-weight because they confusethirst with hunger and eat toomuch,” she says.
With the new school year hav-ing just started a good eatinghab-it could help improve a child’sperformance.
Pieters says good foods to in-clude in your child’s lunch boxare low GI bread (which decreas-es the sugar spike), and a proteinthat suits your pocket such asmeat, cheese, peanut butter oregg and a fruit.
“Apples are low GI fruits and travel well.Buy different types and colours,” says Pie-ters.
Breakfast is also very important to kick-start a day, saysPieters. She lists lowGI toast, egg, peanut butter,
low GI oats or muesli, yoghurt and a fruitor few raisins as good breakfast choices forchildren.
She adds that pilchards are excellent food.“It is packed with good Omega-3 fatty acids,
excellent source of protein and minerals fromthe sea and calcium from the soft bones in thefish. The tomato added to most tins is alsovery good, filled with anti-oxidants that pro-tect against many diseases,” says Pieters.
She highlights that it is also affordable andyou can stock up and keep some.
“I combine it with wholewheat pasta, on-ions and spices, then add a thin layer of grat-ed cheese on top for a lovely fast dish for thefamily,” she adds.

WHEN did you last put pen to paper towrite a real love letter? With the advanceof technology, so-called snail mail has be-come a nostalgic pastime.
The SA Post Office (SAPO) is encourag-ing romantic South Africans to use thepostal service for Valentine’s Day.
“A card or letter for Valentine’s Day isthe best possible gift for a loved one somedistance away,” says Janras Kotsi, headof Mail Business at the SAPO. “A letteror card sent by a loved one must be oneof the best surprises anyone can get.”
The SAPO says a letter bearing a stamphas a 50% bigger chance of being openedfirst (or at all) than one without a stamp. The reason is that it is perceived a persontook time and effort to sit down and writeit.
Kotsi says a card or letter is easy tokeep and will not be deleted or lost whena phone is upgraded or a hard disk crash-
es. “Itwill outlast flowers, it takesupverylittle storage space and when you rereadit years later, it will evoke more memo-ries than any other keepsake.”
He adds that mail is more romanticthan social media because you can nei-ther spray it with aftershave or perfumenor kiss it with lipstick.
Kotsi also points out that a letter makesa particularly affordable gift for Valen-tine’s Day: “A standard letter costs onlyR2,65 in postage, but it remains appropri-ate for Valentine’s Day which focuses onemotion and feeling, not financial value.Customers should make sure they use theright address and postcode, which can belookedupon line atwww.postoffice.co.za.
“Remember we can create personalmemories, strengthen existing relationsand even create new relationships bysending someone a personalised card ormessage for Valentine’s Day.”
Go on, write a love letter

Plan to red-light traffic jamsTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
OBEDIENCE to road rules will go someway to easing up traffic congestion dur-ing school terms in Pinelands.
This is according to ward councillor BrianWatkyns, who adds that in the past pupilsmay have walked or gone to school on a bicy-cle, but many now go to school by car.
He adds: “In the past schools permitted ve-hicles to enter the premises to dropoff or pickup pupils, but in the interest of overall pupilsafety this is no longer allowed which alsocontributes to the problem.”
He points out the real problem is that someparents park as close to the school as possibleirrespective of whether this contravenesroad regulations.
“The red and yellow line markings and nostopping signs are put up either in the inter-est of road safety or, in some cases, to preventmotorists blocking a neighbour’s driveway.”
He adds: “By ignoring the very clear roadmarkings, signs and laws governing whereyou may stop or park, the driver is jeopardis-ing the safety of both pupils and other roadusers.”
While the safety of school children is im-portant traffic congestion goes beyond caus-ing an inconvenience to residents, he says.Watkyns recalls an instance when an ambu-lance was seriously delayed in reaching a pa-tient. He says he has received many com-plaints fromresidentswho experienced simi-lar situations as a direct result of the trafficcongestion.
“On one occasion a resident was blockedfrom leaving his premises and missed hisflight. I have also had complaints about par-ents leaving their cars in a neighbour’s drive-way,” he says. “Neighbours have also com-plained about parents being abusive whenasked to move.”
Watkyns says obedience to the road ruleswill make a big difference.
The problem tends to be worse in the begin-ning of each year, he says. “Parents who arenew to the school often seem oblivious to thefact they are breaking the law – especiallyin regard to parking on verges.”
Some residents have resorted to placingstones on the verges to prevent other vehiclesfrom parking there.
Schools in Pinelands are actively trying toassist.
“Last year at Pinelands High I had bollardinstalled as the grassed verge was beingturned into a sandy waste. The school con-
tributed R24 000 to increase the number ofparkingbaysbeingbuiltwithwardallocationfunds,” he says.
Watkyns says Pinehurst Primary is in theprocess of obtaining permission to extendtheir street parking.
“I have had no complaints about traffic atPinelands Primary, Cannons Creek or Vista
Nova High.”He adds that at schools where there have
been complaints, requests are made for par-ents not to park illegally when dropping offor collecting pupils.
“Such a request was put out (last) week toparents, but the photographs taken the dayafter the notices were sent shows that some
parents ignored the request.”In an effort to address the increase in com-
plaints, drivers who persist in flouting thelawwill face thewrath LawEnforcement offi-cials.
“The officers will also be checking thatthose transporting pupils for a fee have therequired permits,” he warns.
HARD TO NEGOTIATE: Ward councillor Brian Watkyns is appealing to residents to obey the rules of the road. Photo: Supplied

Give in to dress-up craze for good causeTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
THERE’S no better excuse to give vent toyour creative bent than raising funds forhospice.
The Hospice Palliative Care Associationis appealing to all Capetonians to dress incrazy costumes for the secondLace-upWalkfor Cancer.
The event takes place on Saturday 2 Feb-ruary at the Old Mutual Sports Field inPinelands.
The fundraisers is the brainchild of EricWatlington, who has been working for Hos-pice for many years.
He sayshe cameupwith this idea throughhis own experiences of cancer and how itaffects the patient’s family.
“Not everyone is able todealwitha familymemberwho is severely ill andhospice carecan help,” he says. “However, it is also im-portant for people to understand that hos-pice is not a place where people go to die.”
Watlington says it is very important tocreate awareness and educate people on thefunction of a hospice.
“People are referred to a hospice to revi-talise them; it is not just a place to go die. That’s the importantmessage we are tryingto get across by creating awareness through
walks such as these.”He adds referrals to hospice have to be
made by a doctor. “Every patient is differ-ent. It depends on the situation as well asthe family and then the doctor decides whatwould be the best plan of action for the pa-tient,” he says.
Watlington explains that although peopledo sometimes leave hospices fully recov-ered, their main objective with caring forthe terminally ill is to let them die with dig-nity and not in pain.
“Our job is to ensure that patients taketheir medication, eat properly, are bathedand are comfortable. However, not every
patient’s needs are the same.”The association offers community-based
care in which they assist people in theirown homes. This includes home visits, aswell as bathing and feeding, and alsowounddressing.
They also offer limited in-patient careduring which the patient is cared for at oneof the hospice facilities.
“This walk is just a fun day for people tocome out and show their support. We havea best dressed competition aswell,” he says.
“Although there is no entrance fee to takepart, wewould appreciate a donation of anyamountwhen registering. You will receivea pair of multi-coloured shoe laceswhichrepresent all the different cancers which af-fect people.”
Peace vsprotestsVIOLENT protests about service deliveryhave in recent months marred the politi-cal landscape. People’s Post interns Tar-ren-LeeHabelgaarn andLuzukoZini tookto the streets and asked readers if the vio-lence is justified or it is a sign of despera-tion.
DESPERATE: Steve Fraser says while hedoesn’t condone violence, when people arehopeless they get desperate. “If people can’tget their point across what other option dothey have? Something needs to be done, butit all boils down to education; it allows you todecide what is right and wrong.”
Photos: Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn and Luzuko Zini
UNACCEPTABLE: Stirling DamainHarris saysviolence is never justified. He thinks peopleprotest when they have come to the end oftheir patience. At that point, he says, there isno other way but violence. “I feel particularlysorry for the farmworkers who work in rain andsun, but get R50.”
NEVER VIOLENCE: Thelma Harris says violence should never be an option. She says itis particularly frustrating when protestersdon’t think of the inconvenience caused tothemselves and others. “If you take the farmorkers: when they go back to work the stuff(property) is broken. It is unfair towards themselves and the farmers.”
ELECT LEADERS: Taariq Samuels says: “That’stheir way of getting what they want, but it doesnot always go their way. Protesters shouldelect someone who will speak on their behalfto the people, company or government so thatthings can be resolved in a peaceful way.”
NOT IDEAL: KayLeigh Meistre believes protesting is a way for protesters to get attention, but believes violence is not the way. “Protesters need to speak up and voice their concernsinstead of being violent. Violence has neversolved anything but only makes things worse.”
UNJUST: Andiswa Sam says: “Violence is notthe way because it only makes things worse.Violence is not a sign of desperation, but anopportunity (for some people) to ruin what hasalready been done for them. The only way forward is to address issues in a civilised way.”
OTHER MEANS: Zach Simpson believes thereare other ways of dealing with the protesters’concerns. “The violence may be a sign of desperation, but there is no need for it. They shoulduse peaceful methods of protest that haveserved this and other countries well.”

Vagrancy: vouchers a solutionTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
RESIDENTS in Newlands are hoping fora speedy solution to address vagrancy inthe suburb.
One resident, who spoke to People’s Post oncondition his name not be used, says he hascome across two more hideouts of peoplesleeping and living rough in Newlands.“Besides the unbelievable mess they (the
homeless) cause and leave behind, all of thishas health implications for residents,” hesays. The resident says his main concerns are
centred on the unavailability of ablution fa-cilities and the fact that the homeless scav-enge for food in rubbish bins.“Any effort on the part of homeowners to
keep their bins hygienic is undone by va-grants as they rip any bags to pieces and scat-ter rotting food. I am sick to death of seeingmy and surrounding suburbs turned into arotting rubbish heap.”He says the public hears and reads “ever
more hot air waffle” by politicians, counsel-lors andauthorities aboutnewbylaws to curbvagrancy in the suburbs, but “the problem isgetting worse each year”.“In the early hours when I put my bin out-
side for rubbish removal on a Thursdaymorning, I see ‘troops’ of (people) digging inbins and scattering the contents.”Another resident, Francine Bekker, agreed
saying: “Every night when I go for myevening walk, I find a new spot taken over byvagrants. Their latest spot is just pass theBel-mont bridge. When will it end?”
Megan Cairns, public relations and volun-teer manager at U-turn, says one way thecommunity can make a big difference to im-prove vagrancy is by not given them moneyor handouts.“When you are not enabling people to live
on the street that iswhatmakes a difference,”says Cairns. She also says people who give vagrants
money are providing them with an option toremain on the street by giving them a “freepay cheque”.“We know with homeless people around it
could be a nuisance and we empathise withthat, but in response we are urging residentsto make use of our meal vouchers.”She adds: “Our records show that 72% of
vouchers bought are returned to us. Sovouchers are working and it puts (the home-
less) people in contact with organisationssuch as ours which can help them.”
Cairns says another positive is the fact thatover the past year they have noticed a de-crease in the number of people usingU-turn’sservices.This, she says, is an indicator that less peo-
ple are needing their services.“It’s not just us,” she says. “Other organisa-
tions similar to ours, such as theHavenNightShelter, who have a decrease in people mak-ing use of their services.”Residents can purchase meal tickets at
many of the churches and Engen garages inthe Claremont Cluster.“By giving people vouchers – and not mon-
ey – you are making a big difference,” saysCairns. The vouchers are R30 for five.

Post Office headed for revampTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
POST officemanagement sayspersistent vandalism puts thefacility in need for an up-grade.
The post office, on Mains Ave-nue in Kenilworth, has becomerundown over the years and, says ward councillor IanIversen, it is due for an overhaul.Iversen says the problem he
faces is that he is not dealingwith themunicipality as thePostOffice is responsible for allmain-tenance upgrades to the proper-ty. “Therefore I can’t just sendane-mail requesting certain thingsto be done,” he says.Martie Gilchrist, of SAPO’s
communications division, saysthere was a “major clean-up” inwhich trees were trimmed andthe exterior cleaned. She sayssomeone will be sent to assessthe property and see what needsto be fixed in this week.Iversen adds: “The entrance to
the Post Office is looking reallygrubby – most probably becauseof the vagrants who eat anddrink on the steps.”He points out other problems
in need of attention, includingreplacing the catch to hold backthe door.“At themoment they are using
a string as a catch to hold thedoor,” he says.Iversen adds that the support-
ing iron work along the front ofthe complex looks as if it hasnev-er been washed and the tiled
walkway to the letter boxesneeds to be scrubbed.“The copper cover which was
around the post box in the wallhas been missing for about ayear. Grass and weeds are alsocoming up through the bricks inthe parking area,” he adds.Eric Aspeling, manager of the
Kenilworth Post Office, says thePost Office is constantly beingvandalised and they are alwaysreplacing stolen copper and iron.“We reported the (theft of the)
brass plate, (which was) on there-post box, to the police. Wehave also replaced the hook onthe back of the door three timesas it is always being stolen,” hesays.Aspeling also says they have a
problemwith vagrants and pros-titutes in the area who congre-gate in front of the Post Office.“They are always dropping
things in front of the Post Officeand leaving a mess.”He adds: “In the past we never
had a need for fencing and gates, but because of the vandalismand having to prevent the home-less from sleeping on our door-step, we had to add them.”Aspeling says: “The more we
replace the things, the more itgets stolen, but we have reportedit to our regional office to fix thevandalised items.”Iversen adds: “I plan to be in
touch with the Regional Manag-er of thePostOffice andwill sendhim photographs, when askingthat funds be allocated for up-grading.” MAKEOVER: The brass frame of the repost box at Kenilworth Post Office is missing. Photo: Supplied

More remains unearthedTERESA FISCHER
MYSTERY surrounds the discovery ofthreemore skeletonswhichhave beenunearthed inside the Police Museumin Muizenberg.
Asource, whohas seen the remainsandrefuses to be named, described them as“two bodies in coffins” and “one (skele-ton) lying next to the coffin”.Another source says these were re-moved in “three black buckets” onWednesday. In December, workers renovating thepremises, built in 1910, made the first dis-covery of a single skeleton.Employees of Bambana ManagementServices, the company completing themulti-million rand renovations at themuseum, said they were not allowed tocomment.People’s Post has reliably learnt the re-mains are believed to date back to post-1600, the Colonial era.Brigadier Srini Govender, the police’ssection head of corporate communica-tions, said the bones date back manyyears (“Scientists to verify bones find”,People’s Post, 22 January).Govender would not speculate on theorigin of the remains, but said the boneshave been sent to an archaelogist for veri-fication.Govender says it is difficult to pinpointthe area where the bones were found, butsays the findwasmadeduring excavationwork undertaken inside the building. He says excavation has been temporar-ily halted and adds the police is not in a
position to speculate further until moreinformation is made available.Troy Phili, Unit Manager of BurialGrounds andGraves at the SouthAfricanHeritage Resources Agency (SAHRA),confirmed the matter had come to SAH-RA’s attention.Adding the matter is “of a very sensi-tive nature”, he says detailed informa-tion on the history of the burials wouldbe established through further investiga-tionbyUCT’sDepartment ofHumanBiol-ogy.This is also where the remains will bestored prior to consultations and identifi-cationof a suitable space for re-burial andcommemoration.Phili says, to his knowledge, this is thefirst such discovery in Muizenberg, com-pared to the Greenpoint/Prestwich Placearea where, he says, the roads and build-ings seem to have been built over a largeburial plot.He says it remains to be seen whetherthe discovery at the museumwill remainan isolated case or reveal a more wide-spread burial site.He says the application for a permit forthe exhumation of the remains had firstbeen submitted to Heritage WesternCape, which deals with pre-colonial hu-man remains as per agreementwithSAH-RA.Phili says it was subsequently estab-lished the remainsweremore recent thanoriginally believed and, therefore, thecase was referred to SAHRA.The permit will allow for further re-movals, provided they are not more than10. He says in such an instance a new per-
mit application would need to be lodgedwith SAHRA.This would require a public consulta-tionprocess to ascertain the site’s histori-cal background and the identities and de-scendants of people buried there, who, inturn, need togive consent for the exhuma-tion, relocation and re-burial of remains. The archaeologist conducting the anal-ysis on the remains was unable to com-ment at this stage.Phili notes in areas where there hadbeen forced removals, such as Ndabeni, the question iswhat couldhavehappenedto the community cemetery.“There are other incidences whereforcefully removed residents came backafter the demise of apartheid and foundgraves having been built on or relocatedwithout any consultations,” Phili says.Peter Harrison, vice-chairperson of theMuizenberg Historical Conservation So-ciety, volunteers at Het Posthuys, whichis adjacent to the museum and the oldeststanding building on the False Bay coast-line.He says the museum, in two sections, consisted of a Magistrate’s Court, com-plete with cells, and a police station. The police station was previously usedas a library and the courthouse as a postoffice.Harrison would not be drawn to com-ment about the discovery.Chris Taylor, a specialist on the Battleof Muizenberg (1795), says it is unlikelythe remains would be casualties of thisbattle between the British forces and theDe Vereenigde Ost-Indische Compagne(VOC).

Stars shine for HomeMUSIC is a language everyonecan understand. Add a joke ortwo and you have a winningcombination.
This is just what is on offerwhen funds will be raised for theDouglas Murray Home for theAged, in Retreat.
Following a People’s Post re-port that the Home is in direstraits, an events company wasspurred into action to host a fun-draiser called Comedy and Jazzon The Greenz.
The event will be held at theVodacom Golf Driving Range inRosmead Avenue, Wynberg, onSaturday 2 February. It starts at19:00 and the cover charge isR100.
The artist line-up is enough tomake any jazz lover’s mouth wa-ter. It includes well-known andmuch-loved Cape Town jazz mu-sician Richard Ceasar, the sul-try Melanie Scholtz, Open MicJazz Contest winner CandiceThornton, jazz duo The RubenDale Band and
all-girl group G-Major.They will be supported by co-
medians Dalin Oliver, DevonGray and Calvin Benson whohave all been making seriousheadway on the comedy scene.
Fred Daniels, CEO of theHome, says funds have “all butdried up, as the Home strugglesto stay afloat”. Established 43years ago and now home to 90residents, the Home gets by on ashoestring budget.
“Municipal bills are in the re-gion of R30 000 a month and inwinter this can skyrocket. Thisexcludes the salaries for thestaff, as well as food and other es-
sentials,” says Daniels. He adds the event “may not be
able to cover all costs”.While most of the residents
need 24-hour, specialised nurs-ing and medical care, theHome’s “biggest challenge iscovering staff salaries”.
The facility employs 63 staffworking on 12-hour shifts a day.“We need professional caregiv-ers and nurses to attend to ourresidents. In an ideal world wewould need one professionalnurse for every two residents,”Daniels says. “But the nursesneed to be paid up to R12 500 amonth. We do not have this kindof money.”
Towards the end of last year, the Home’s Board was facedwith the challenging decision ofdownscaling or closing the doorsto the facility.
It is in light of this that theyhave embarked on The SaveDouglas Murray Home Cam-paign and this fundraiser formspart of the campaign. The cam-paign is aimed at galvanisingthe support of the communityand creating awareness to theplight of the Home.
“We have received tremen-dous support since we have beenafforded the opportunity to tellour story in the previous articleand in various interviews. Thereality, however, is that theHome needs this to be ongoing aswe still have a long way to go andmay find ourselves in the sameposition sooner than we think ifinterest in the Home starts towane.”

Water wonder swims his way to the topLIAM MOSES
A RONDEBOSCH matriculanthas proved himself as one of thebest young swimmers in thecountry after returning froman international competitionwith three medals around hisneck.
Craig Emslie claimed silver inthe 50m and 100m breaststrokeevents and won gold and helpedbreak an African record in the4x50m relay at the Zone VI YouthGames in Zambia.Emslie says while he enjoyed
winning themedals, the honour ofrepresenting SouthAfricawas thehighlight of the games.“It’s amazing. All the interna-
tional meets are very cool. The TVcameras are there and you get sup-port from the crowd,” the Ronde-bosch Boys’ High School pupilsays.“At the opening ceremony you
feel so proud to be a SouthAfrican. The flag raising ceremonywas thebest part; it was much better thangetting the medals.”The tournament was hosted in
Lusaka in December and featuredathletes from all the countries insouthern Africa, including Bot-swana, Angola, Mozambique andZimbabwe. It featured swimming, athletics,
football, basketball, judo and ten-nis competitions and saw SA fin-ish at the top of the medal stand-ings with 67 gold, 46 silver and 19bronze medals.Emslie also won gold in the 50m
breaststroke at the last five con-
secutive Junior National Champi-onships and is currently trainingfor the Senior Nationals, whichtake place in April. The 18-year-old has been swim-
ming from the age of eight, butsays he only started taking thesport seriously recently. He aimsto make swimming his career andhas set his sights on the 2016Olym-pic Games.“The team I swim for is theHigh
Performance Team at UWC Swim-ming Club, earmarked for the 2016Olympics,” says Emslie.“Our long-term goal is working
towards that, whilemy short-termgoal is theCommonwealthGames, coming up in two years. There isalso the Junior World Champion-ships at the end of the year, whichI am working towards. We alsohave Nationals in April. Ultimate-ly it’s just building up and climb-ing the ladder.”His current regimen in the High
PerformanceSquad seeshim trainat least 10 times a week – twice onsome days – and swim around12km a day, six times a week.Emslie says although the train-
ing is tough, he is prepared to puthis “head down” and work for hisgoals.“There is a saying that ‘hard
work beats talent if talent doesn’twork hard’. You can have all thetalent, but if you don’t work hardyou won’t get there,” he says.“Some people don’t understand
the training you go through. Ittakes toll on your body and youjust need to push through. Themental ability is what gets you ontop.”

Blackpool fall short at homeLIAM MOSES
APOORhome track record continuedun-abated for ASD Salt River Blackpoolwhen they dropped points the fifth timein six matches on Saturday.Blackpool lost 2-1 to Peacemakers at
UCT on Saturday, meaning that theirhome record now stands at four draws, one loss and a solitary win. They have been a completely different
side away fromhome, claiming three vic-tories and a draw in their travels.DaveWaters, the side’s assistant coach,
felt his team’s inability to finish offmoves was to blame for the defeat.“We started slowly and quite nervous-
ly, and then the players started to dowhatwas asked of them,” says Waters.“I felt we eventually came into the
game and we were on top from the 15-minute mark. We held possession welland created opportunities, but there wasa lack of clinicalness in the final third. Iam happy with the defensive third andmiddle third; it’s just the endproduct thatwas missing today.”The visitors took the lead in the 15th
minute when Tabiso Gwaba fired passedthe keeper after being played into thebox.Blackpool had a clear-cut opportunity
to draw level seven minutes later, whenattackingmidfielder Brandon Fernandez
pushed into space down the right flankand played in a perfectly-placed ball.Striker Luqmaan Davids soared above
his marker to meet the cross, but hisheader was off target.Fernandez was influential throughout
the first-half and he would have tied thescores in the 45th minute, with a close-range strike, if not for an excellent savefrom the opposition keeper. The cultured attacker had another gilt-
edged chance in the 10th minute of sec-ond-half, when Blackpool were awardeda penalty following a handball. However,he skied his shot high above the goal.Fernandez was eventually rewarded
for his efforts in the 35th of the second-half, when his curling free kick from theedge of the box beat the keeper.Peacemakers refused to settle for the
draw and restored their lead the follow-ing minute, when Gwaba completed hisbrace with another low, angled shot frominside the box.The result leaves Blackpool in sixth
place on 17 points, while Peacemakershave crept within touching distance oftheir latest opposition. Only goal differ-ence keeps them in eighth.Waters said his side would spend more
time working on their final passes andfinishing at training ahead of their en-counter against Ida’s Valley FC in Stel-lenbosch on Friday.

SOUTH AFRICAN women’s hockey stalward PietieCoetzee scored two goals to help Investec SouthAfri-ca to a 2-0 win over Austria in their final WorldLeague round two match at Hartleyvale Stadium onSunday.
SA went through to the World League semi-finals onSaturday when they beat Azerbaijan 7-0 and Sunday’smatch had no bearing on that outcome. However, the host team still played to win and the re-
sult was ensured by two sizzling drag-flick penalty cor-ners from world record goal scorer Coetzee. The first goal came in the 10th minute after BernieCoston’s pace down the right won South Africa their
first penalty corner and Coetzee rifled a flat astro-burnerinto the bottom of the backboard.Six minutes later it was Shelley Russell’s turn to use
her pace and stick-ball control at high speed to outflankher would-be tackler and set up SA’s second penalty cor-ner.Coetzee aimed for the top shelf this time and beat Aus-
trian goalkeeper Jasmin Anderle with ease. The double took Coetzee’s international tally to 258
goals in 258 test matches.Although SA dominated the rest of the match, further
successful strikes didn’t materialise.South Africa’s pace on attack was one of the most im-
pressive aspects of their play, and forwards Russell, Cos-ton and Sulette Damons were just three of the frontrun-ners who burned their markers away. The second team to qualify for the World League semi-
finals were Belgium, who beat Azerbaijan 1-0 on Sunday.Fixtures for the third round will be announced when
all second round fixtures are completed in March.Thewomen in green and gold now focus their attention
on the prestigious Investec Challenge, which also in-volves world number one and 2012 Olympic gold medal-lists Holland, as well as England and Australia. The Investec Challenge kicks-off at Hartleyvale on
Monday4Februaryandculminates in themedalmatcheson Sunday 10 February.
