Peer review of resource PackAugusto Boal

Reviewed by group 8.

Is the information accurate?

• We found the information was accurate but not sourced or cited.

• If this presentation had been cited the information would come across as more reliable as it would be validated.

• No bibliography was presented, was slide missing?

Summarising…

• Summarising we felt was poor, having missed vital information that we found in various sources.

• Key information we felt was necessary to the presentation was left out i.e. his influences regarding ‘Marxist theories’ were as a result of his working in a poverty stricken environment, and led to his beliefs that theatre should be for the masses and not the ‘privileged few.’

• (Cited from Wikipedia)• Biography poorly summarised in view of all the

information available.

Representation of Mainstream views on practitioner …

• Because of lack of referencing it stunted the perception on whose view we were reading.

• There was mention of government, community, and we found references to the military, yet it is unclear as to who thought what towards Augusto Boal and his theories. ( see slide 6 “ some people”)

Referencing and sources…

• We found no citing of sources, and no referencing

• However, there was a slide on his publications and there was a book referred to for ‘ Games for actors and non actors’, which having read slide two we knew was authored by Augusto Boal.

Divergent views acknowledged…

• The group members all gave their view on Boal’s work which was good.

• We feel that the divergent views given were a little vague.

• Rather than having opposing views on his work and theories, it was one argument i.e. he was a ‘rebel.’

Application of ideas appropriate…

• Application of ideas were appropriate, they related to his work really well, in looking at the theatre of the oppressed.

• However, other ideas were overlooked i.e. his biography of works and achievements (UNESCO Pablo Picasso medal august 1997 and “ career achievement award in higher education by the association of theatre”)

• Also, points regarding politics, his life in government, and militia, as well as his arrest and exile to Argentina and how his career started were not included. We felt this information was pivotal in his influences, in his innovations of ‘oppressed theatre’ as well as his teaching career in Paris which lasted for twelve years.

Could it go further? In which directions?

• As on previous slide the presentation could have included the points missing regarding career, exile etc.

Overall good points of presentation

• Overall the presentation was clearly laid out.

• It looked professional, and had clear reasoning behind it.

• It had good structure, was easily accessible, logical order, easy to read as not over wordy.

• Good use of images and design.• Fulfilled most criteria for presentation brief

Good points continued….

• Gives good overall sense of practitioner and his innovations in The ‘theatre of the oppressed.’

• Excellent use of colour and slide layout.

• To improve this presentation referencing would have been key
