The Players

Groups of three• 2 players• 1 judge

The Set-UpTeam Arrangements

– The judge sits facing the pair of players• Someone who’s been absent or hasn’t completed

the WS

– One player can see the screen (the examiner)

– The other player sits facing away from it (the interpreter)

The Procedure• The teacher asks if players are

ready. • When they are:

– A card will appear with a name or a term related to the Cold War

– The partner in the examiner’s seat will do his or her best to describe the item to his or her teammate

– The interpreter will guess the term until either A. he guesses correctly, orB. the time is up

Judging & Scoring

• No looking! (obviously)• No player may use any part of the

term or event in his or her description• No interpretive body movement

(e.g. sign language, pantomime, pointing to hints, etc.)

• When time’s up, TIME’S UP!• No hints!

(e.g. “Rhymes with ____!” “Sounds like _____!”)

• A correct response within the time limit wins 1 point – 16 pts possible– Only CORRECT answers score! – There is NO PARTIAL CREDIT!

Containment• American policy of resisting

further expansion of communism. – Emerged from George Kennan’s analysis,

which said “U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union must be that of a long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies.

6.Douglas MacArthur

Douglas MacArthur• U.S. general during the Great

Depression, WWII, and Korean War; forced by Truman to resign in 1951.

7.Iron Curtain

Iron Curtain• Winston Churchill called the

division between Communist and Non-Communist world powers the “Iron Curtain”

8.Brinkmanship

Brinkmanship• 1956 term used by Secretary of

State John Dulles, describes a policy of risking war in order to protect national interests.– controversial

9.Arms Race

Arms Race• A struggle between world powers

for superiority of weapons and military power.– E.g. atom bomb

10.Warsaw Pact

Warsaw Pact• A military alliance between the

Soviet Union and its satellite nations in Eastern Europe, formed in 1955.

11. George Marshall

George Marshall• Assisted economic recovery in

Europe after WWII and established allies for the US through his Marshall Plan.– Army Chief of Staff during WWII and

Sec. of State under President Truman

12.Satellite Nation

Satellite Nation• A country dominated politically

and economically by the Soviet Union during the cold war.

13.Cold War

Cold War• Competition for power and

influence between the US and Soviet Union that developed after WWII for. – Lasted until the collapse of the Soviet

Union.

14.Berlin Airlift

Berlin Airlift• U.S. and Great Britain distributed

by air food and supplies into West Berlin during a Soviet blockade in 1948-49.

15.HUAC

HUAC• Investigated disloyalty and

espionage in America, especially associated with Communism and the second red scare.– House Un-American Activities Committee– Headed up by Joseph McCarthy

16.NATO

NATO• 1949 group of nations who agreed

to ally in support and protection of one another’s interests following WWII– North Atlantic Treaty Organization;
