“ part of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership"
On Tuesday March 26th 2019, Sycamore class
went to the Radstock Museum.
Everyone looked splendid dressed as Victorians,
from gentlemen to chimney sweeps. We were
captivated by the knowledgeable and fun
volunteers who transformed us back in time to
experience Victorian life. In the schoolroom, we
learnt a song in a round and heard about their
stricter discipline. Some were surprised that the
cane wasn’t as thick as they had expected!
We visited a blacksmith and the Co-op. Matty H
and Brandon helpfully pretended to be horses to
show how a horse’s shoe is fitted! At the Co-op,
we were inspired to hear how 28 people saved
their pennies until they could open a shop with
food that was not expensive. We were
challenged to examine various artefacts and
guess their function.
We explored Victorian ice skates, poison bottles,
and hair curlers. The iron was very heavy as it
was made of solid iron. We felt as though we had
spent a morning in a Victorian town and have
learned many details about life at that time.
MESSAGE FROM MRS COURTIER & MRS BAZELEY
The building work is progressing and pleasingly the
two classrooms being renovated at the back of the
school will be handed back to us after Easter, as
will two blocks of toilets, a new staffroom, a SEN
room and disabled toilet/shower room. Year 6 will
move to the old Maple and Willow classrooms and
the final classroom be renovated. The builders are
about four weeks behind schedule, due to finish the
first week of June.
We are looking forward to our Ground Force Day on
Friday morning. The Easter Service is on Thursday
at the Methodist Church. We hope you have a
peaceful and restful Easter holidays.

On Friday 8th of March, Oak Class visited Bristol Aquarium as part of their ‘Under the Sea’ topic. We were very about this trip; we spent time on the coach travelling to Bristol, discussing the different animals which we might see on arrival there. On arrival at the aquarium we were greeted by a large statue of a beetle, we had our picture taken with it. Then we went inside, it was so fascinating! We started the trip by investigating the aquarium by looking at all the creatures native to the Atlantic Ocean and we learnt how to make jelly fish out of bottles.
As we travelled around the aquarium, we looked at creatures from most of the different oceans and rivers around the world. Some of the most interesting were the electric eel (which was huge!) and the piranha fish. We saw very calm and beautiful seahorses and clown fish also, the clown fish look just like Nemo! When we had our specialist learning talk, our guide taught us all about sharks; we learnt about their teeth and eggs and even got to feel their skin, which was actually quite rough. I’m sure we all have our favourite fish or experience from the day, but all in all we had a great time. It was very enjoyable.

Year 5 Maths Challenge
On Thursday March 28th, four Year 5 pupils: Hope, Georgina, Olivia and Grace, represented Longvernal
at the inter-school Mathematics Challenge, competing against about a dozen schools. They travelled to
The Paragon School, Bath, where they worked in pairs to tackle a variety of number and shape
problems which really challenged their application of skills. The team enjoyed the challenge and look
forward to enjoying similar tasks back at school.
Please can we remind you that all
dinner money, breakfast club and
after school club fees should be
paid for IN ADVANCE on
Parentpay. Failure to do so may
result in us having to withdraw
these services.
Thank you.
PARENTS WITH TODDLERS/PRE SCHOOL
CHILDREN - PLEASE NOTE!
Safety Concern:-
Please hold your child’s hand or keep them
strapped in a buggy when on school grounds.
We have had a few near misses recently with
children running loose/out of the gates/around
the car park. We do not want any accidents!
Do you live in the Kilmersdon area?
Are you able to offer a lift to school?
We have a parent/child currently living in
Kilmersdon who is having difficulty getting
the child to school on time due to other
family circumstances. If you are able to
offer this child a lift on route to school
please contact the office for further details.
Thank you.
RED NOSES
You may be wondering why the children are
coming home with red noses after comic relief
day? One of our parents works for a local
supermarket and they had lots of surplus red
nose stock. These have been kindly donated
to the school. Teachers/dinner ladies etc are
using them as rewards and incentives.
Therefore there is no payment required, thank
you.

We have had a great week in Holly Class learning all about different jobs! Firstly, we had a visit from two
paramedics, Emma and Sarah. Secondly, Becky, taught us all about her job as a carer. Our third visitor,
Sarah, taught us all about her job as a nurse. Our fourth visitor, Alex, taught us all about his job in the
Army. Our fifth visitor, PCSO Samways, taught us all about his job and let us become junior police officers!
Our final visitor, Philippa, taught us all about her job as a project manager in a bank and helped us to plan a
party! Last week we had Sophie from the Ambulance service come in, she taught us about her job as a 999
emergency call handler and what to do if we need to call an ambulance.
We are grateful to our visitors and we wish to extend a massive thank you to all of them, the children loved
learning about different jobs and have since produced some fantastic writing around what they would like
to be when they grow up and why.
Our Trip to the Egg Theatre, Bath
On Wednesday 20th March, Holly Class travelled to The Egg Theatre to watch ‘How to Catch a Star’ based
on a book by the award-winning author Oliver Jeffers. The children were mesmerised by the puppet show
performance and have since been enthusiastically discussing what happened during the performance. Even
the coach journey proved to be a great experience as children were eager to locate and name places and
animals they could see along the way, using some great descriptive and positional vocabulary! We also had
numerous games of ‘eye spy’! This was an extremely enjoyable first school trip for the class and behaviour
was exemplary. The children represented Longvernal Primary School amazingly and made staff feel very
proud, we cannot wait for our next school trip!
Chestnut Class thoroughly enjoyed their visit to
The Wild Place Project to launch into their topic
this term ‘Down at the bottom of the garden’. In
particular they enjoyed their woodland games
learning about nocturnal animals which is
feeding nicely into their writing this term.
