Blue Devil Girls Get 4thIn Kearny Track Relays

The Westfield High School girlstrack and field team made a verygood showing by placing fourth in afield of 40 teams at the KearnyRelays held in Morristown on April3. The Blue Devil girls, who had atotal of 30, placed in eight of the 12events, excluding the pole vault,and were without the services ofstars Annie Onishi and EmilyMacNeil. The Blue Devil boys tiedfor sixth in their division with 22points while the GovernorLivingston boys finished second intheir division with 53 points. TheGL girls finished 19th with 10.6points.

Caroline Sheridan and AlisonPetrow gave the Devil girls one oftheir two best placements by takingthird in the team shot put with a totaldistance of 63’5.75’ – a WestfieldHigh School record. Mika Cruz,Lauren Nolan, Danielle Parkinsonand Jessica Stromer crossed third inthe shuttle hurdles with a time of1:13.3. GL Highlanders TeresaCavallaro, Laura Ronner, VeenaVenkatchalam and Chrissy Sidiewon the event in 1:09.9.

Blue Devils Meg Driscoll, JoannMathew, Miriam Becker-Cohen andDeenie Quinn placed fifth in thedistance medley relay with a time of13:19.5 and Cruz, Jennell Carter,Alison Fleder and Ja’net Tiller tookfifth in the 4x100-meter relay at53.2 seconds. In the intermediatehurdles, Laura Pietruszki, Nolan andParkinson finished sixth at 3:56.8and in the 4x200 relay, Cruz, Carter,Tiller and Erica Ammermuller

crossed sixth at 1:51.9. Petrow andChristina Henry placed seventh inthe team discus with a distance of162’4” and Becker-Cohen, Driscoll,Quinn and Lorena Zamarelli placedeighth in the 4x800 relay with atime of 10.16.8.

In the Blue Devil boys division,Mike Gorski and Mike Woods bothcleared 12 feet to capture first in theteam pole vault with a total of 24feet. Jeff Perrella (2:03.5), RobBroadbent (2:06.9), Kris Kagan(2:06.9) and Brendan Egan (2:04.6)crossed second in the 4x800 relaywith a time of 8:22.2 and ScottSteinberg (2:07.8), Egan (51.4),Kagan (3:29.5) and Perrella (4:31.6)finished fourth in the distance med-ley relay with a time of 11:00.5.

GL Highlander Mike Carmodyanchored the winning sprint medleyfoursome that crossed the line in3:36.8. In that event, Carmody out-kicked Brian Scotland of St.Benedict’s to be proclaimed hisdivision’s Most Valuable Performer.Carmody also helped his team placethird in the 4x800 relay.

Highlanders Anthony Abitanteand Matt Sharkey won the teampole vault with a height of 21’6” andTravis Deleon and Pedro Neto gaveGL a first in the long jump with adistance of 35’11.5”. GL finishedfourth in the 4x100 relay at 46.9seconds and fourth in the 4x400relay at 3:36.7. GL also placed fifthin the intermediate hurdles at 3:33and sixth in the distance medleyrelay with a time of 12:21.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood HighSchool junior, Amanda Cameron hasbeen named Union County GirlsSwimmer of the Year by The StarLedger. The Westfield High School

girls swimming team was namedUnion County Team of the Year.

Cameron won the 100-yard freestyleand the 200-yard freestyle and an-chored the Raiders’ winning 200-freestyle relay team at the UnionCounty (UC) meet. At the Pirate Invi-tational, she touched second in the200-freestyle and third in the 100-freestyle. At the Meet of Champions,she placed 14th in the 200-freestyle.Cameron was named to the All-UCFirst Team in the 200-freestyle.

Westfield Blue Devils Kylie Fraser(100-butterfly), Jackie De la Fuente(100-breaststroke) and the 200-med-ley relay team made the All-UC FirstTeam. Kirsten Selert (100-free),Suzanna Fowler (200-free), AmandaDickson (100-breast) and AlliPsyhojos (diving) were named to theAll-UC Second Team. DanielleHeffernan (100-free), Christine Clark(200-free), Becky Fallon (100-back-stroke) and the 400-free relay teamwere named to the All-UC Third Team.

The Raiders’ 400-freestyle relayteam was named All-UC SecondTeam. Morgan Larkin (100-fly) andthe 200-free relay team were namedto the All-UC Third Team. GovernorLivingston Highlanders Moira Price(50-free), Ange Pflug (100-free) andLinnea Buttermore (diving) werenamed to the All-UC First Team.Mary Jane Pijanowski (200-IM) andthe 200-free relay team made theAll-UC Second Team. Kelsie Hall(500-free), Caitlin Zimmerman (100-breast) and Katie Zaeh (200-IM)made the All-UC Third Team. UnionCatholic Vikings Erin O’Connor 100-back) and Jennifer Hand (500-free)made the All-UC Second Team.

Bernstein is “A surprise, but not agreat surprise. We knew he had a lotof talent. He has been working very,very hard,” expressed Kapner whoadded, “The only negative going intothe season is we had a couple ofinjuries that are just coming backtogether now. Rich Moran and AlJaslow have been hurt. They will befine. It’s just a matter of getting themon the court, getting them healthy.Alec is Alec! He plays very well.He’s a very consistent player. Rich,there’s no doubt that the county cham-pionship is one of his goals. We willbe healthy within a week or two.”

Juniors Alex Wasserman, who hasrecovered from knee surgery, and BrianKender, who both placed second in theUCT at second doubles last year, mayhave jumped into the first doublesspot. Senior Co-Captain Adam

Gerckens, who competed at firstdoubles last year with Doug Shinemanwho had graduated, may compete atsecond doubles with partners, seniorMike Checchio, junior Andrew Levyor freshman John Romalho. After afew trial matches, the doubles posi-tions could possibly flip-flop.

“The only problem left is a goodproblem,” Kapner pointed out.“There is only one position left andwe have three very talented youngmen to chose from. We decided onsix of the seven players. Usually I’mlooking for a seventh player.”

The Blue Devils, as they have hadfor many years, have another verytough schedule, which consists ofpowerhouses Summit, Millburn, EastBrunswick, Livingston, Chatham andan appearance at the Newark Acad-emy Tournament.

“We are very excited! We are ayear older, a year wiser. I think wehave a legitimate shot at recapturingthe county championship that, I thinkwe had four years ago. Summit had agreat run.”

Blue Devil Laxers RoutLady Pioneers, 13-4

The Westfield High School girlslacrosse team won its opening gamewith a 13-4 rout of the New Provi-dence Pioneers at Tamaques Park inWestfield on April 3. First homeLizzie Trimble netted two goals andthree assists for the Blue Devils and3M Sara Masel flicked in two goalsand added two assists.

RAW Ali Ryan, LAW JulieShelman and C Anne Siwulec eachfired in two goals. 3M Kate Albinohad a goal and an assist while 2H’sLaura Shelman and Jessica Shor eachscored a goal. Goalie Claire Ganleymade five saves. Pam Lovia nettedfour goals for the Pioneers andStephanie Andreas made two saves.

“I think you are going to see a lotout of another senior, Josh Liss. Lastyear, he was a little bit overshad-owed but he is going to do a lot thisyear,” McGriff mentioned.

Last year, Smith, Mr. Versatility,took second in the triple jump at thesectionals, second in the 400-hurdles

and the high jump at the WC andthird in the javelin at the WC. He willalso compete in the 110-hurdles

“Sean is a guy who can score in fourevents,” said McGriff. “Whether he isjumping, running, hurdling or throw-ing, he will score high this year. Hisshins were bothering him all last year,but he still was able to be our top guyin four events. Now, he is more healthyand is looking real good.”

Sophomore Lance Thomas, a spec-tacular basketball player, is also ex-pected to compete in the 200, 400,long jump and high jump.

“Lance is just a superb athlete, hasgreat work ethics, is a good studentand is everything you could have inan athlete,” expressed McGriff.

Juniors Lakiem Lockery andLamont Hunt will compete in the 100meters and may possibly be in the mixto run in the 4x400 meters, which isyet to be determined. NehemiahBerny-Porter will be an asset in thetriple jump and 110-hurdles. JuniorGreg Bryant will compete in the highjump. Sophomore twins, Tom andRob Ventura, will compete in the polevault and junior Teddy Acosta willcompete in the shot put.

“I think we will do pretty well,”stated McGiff. “We have been a littlebit weak in the sprint area and jumparea, but the kids were young. Wehave all worked together, maturedtogether and we have gotten stronger.I think we will surprise a lot of people.”
