There are always at least two forces acting upon any object that is positioned on an inclined plane the force of gravity and the normal force.
The force of gravity (also known as weight) acts in a downward direction; yet the normal force acts in a direction perpendicular to the surface.

The task of determining the net force acting upon an object on an inclined plane is a difficult manner since the two (or more) forces are not directed in opposite directions.
For these problems, the force of gravity will need tobe resolved into two perpendicular components one directed parallel to the inclined surface and the other directed perpendicular to the inclined surface.

The equations for the parallel and perpendicular components are:

In the absence of friction and the other forces (tension, applied, etc.) the acceleration of an object on an incline can be calculated using a simple formula.

a = g sinθ
In the absence of friction and other forces:
Check:
If the plane were vertical, θ = 90o, the magnitudeof the acceleration would be g. This makes sense because the object would be in free fall.

Friction and Inclined Planes
The force of friction must equal the parallel component of the object's weight.
The normal force is equal to the perpendicular component of the object's weight.
If an object is at rest on an inclined plane, the force of static friction must equal the parallel componentof the object's weight.
As the angle of inclination, θ, increases, Fp increasesin magnitude. Eventually Fp will exceed the maximum value of the force of static friction and the object will begin to slide down the incline.
At what angle will an object just begin to slide down an
inclined plane?

Making a couple of substitutions, we get:

The worker turns to pick up another container before pu shing the first one up the ramp. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.47, will the crate slide down the ramp?
From "Sample Problems Worksheet"
No, the container will not move. The maximum value for the force of static friction is greater than the magnitude of Fparallel.
The worker starts to push the container up the ramp with an applied force parallel to the incline. With what force will he be pushing when the container begins to move?
If the worker continues to push with the same force after the container starts moving, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.25, at what rate will the container start to accelerate?
(The container's acceleration will be zero until the applied force has overcome the force of static friction.)

Module Summary
In this module Force vectors can be broken into components so that dynamics situations can be analyzed using free body diagrams and Newton's Second Law.
Situations involving inclined planes (ramps)can be analyzed by rotating the coordinate system so that the xaxis is parallel to the ramp and the yaxis is perpendicular to the ramp. The components for force of gravity can then be given by
