Overview

• Modelling tools used to be

made by modellers for

modellers

• Truii’s user focused approach,

puts tools in the hands of

decision makers

• Case studies of tools created

for decision makers

Phase 3

Development

Phase 1: UX Research

• User interviews• Get user requirements from real users!

• Who are they?

• What are their goals?

• What questions to they need to ask?

• Map workflows / user journeys• What is their current process for achieving the

task?

• Where are the pain points?

• Where are the opportunities to improve that process?

• Create design personas• Representative of real users

• This is who we are designing for

Phase 2: UX/UI Design

• Wireframes

• Overall user interaction

• Maps out functionality

• Multiple iterations

• High fidelity mock-ups

• Detailed interactions

• Detailed functionality

• Look and feel

• Design approval

Phase 3: Application Design and Build

• Application architecture

• Front and back end design, informed by mock-ups

• Application build

• Agile approach

• User focused

• Client involvement

Phase 4: Test and Refine

• Usability testing

• Test on real users (representing personas)

• Identify pain points

• Refinement

• How can we make it easier?

• Do we need onboarding?

• User acceptance

• Can the user achieve the goals and answer the questions identified in personas?

Paddock to Reef Data Portal

Paddock to Reef Project Selector (P2R Projector)

The challenge

• Create an online tool to replace the ‘calculator

spreadsheet

• Assist NRM bodies in deciding which P2R projects

should be funded (process was mostly ad hoc)

• Ensure privacy of farm-level data

Our solution

• Simple process (answer questions, draw on map)

• Sort projects by water quality impact

• User management in groups for sharing within

organisations but not with government

• Discovering more use cases as we approach

version 3 (e.g. extension)

Reef Water Quality Report Card

The challenge

• Communicate the outputs of the Paddock to Reef

program / Reef 2050 Plan

• Progress towards 2025 targets – land management,

catchment management, end-of-catchment water quality

• Condition – inshore marine, wetlands

• Lots of different users with different needs

Our solution

• Progressive disclosure approach – start high level

but let those who want to dig deeper for more

information

• Allow different users to explore results using

different pathways (e.g single land use-across all

locations, all land uses for a single region)

Natural Resources Inventory for Qld

The challenge

• Report the stock, use and value of Qld’s natural

resources

• Original request was for paper report

• Never been done before, so no blueprint

Our solution

• Fast and beautiful web-based application that

reports by sector (water, energy, geological, land,

vegetation), resource and spatially

• Highlight high level figures and charts, then allow

users to dig deeper for more information and data

Reefonomics

The challenge

• Create high-level investment planning tool for

Great Barrier Reef water quality

• Builds on Paddock to Reef modelling and

Alluvium costings project (RPIT app)

Our solution

• Sub-catchment scale reporting for budget, all

actions, or to meet targets

• Action library - so users can edit costs and

efficacies of actions without hard coding

• Users can share and manage scenarios

Catchment Investment Decision Support System (CIDSS)

The challenge

• Create investment planning tool for SEQ catchments

• Answer the question “where should we invest to get

the best water quality outcomes?”

• Started from scratch. No modelling in place to

begin.

• Communicate decisions to wider organisation

Our solution

• Flexible data-driven, web-based. Spatial optimisation

solution for small number of modellers (5-6)

• Communication/reporting interface for all Seqwater staff
