Chairman’s Report 2010

2010 saw Albury continue their sensational form to once again take top honours in the seniors and reserves. Wodonga Raiders managed to hold off a strong challenge from the Alpine Eagles to claim the third grade premiership. Perennial powerhouse Yarrawonga became back to back champions in A Grade netball while Albury were crowned B Grade Premiers and North Albury’s young guns claimed their eighth C Grade flag in 10 years.

The Morris Medal again came down to the wire with Wangaratta’s Jamie Allan taking out the league’s best and fairest in a thriller. Wodonga’s Tony Pierri wound back the clock to win the Doug Strang Medal. Rebecca Didier of Corowa-Rutherglen held of all comers to take out the Toni Wilson Medal.

Congratulations must go to Yarrawonga who took out the inaugural overall club championship. Albury won the football club championship while North Albury took out their sixth straight netball championship.

After a successful interleague campaign in 2009 old rivals Goulburn Valley left no stone unturned to retain the Ash-Wilson trophy. The O&M shot out of the blocks but failed to match it with the GV for the remainder of the encounter. While it was disappointment in the senior ranks the under 18’s once again proved the future is bright with a resounding win over their bitter foes.

This year we welcomed Aaron McGlynn to the Operations Officer role. After a career in the media Aaron has now found his feet with the league.

General Manager Tom O’Connor continues to take the league in a positive direction, with a number of new initiatives in 2010. The Morris Medal and Hall of Fame functions were once again a success and Grand Final day was without a doubt the highlight of the season once more which can be directly attributed to the hard work of Tom.

The success of the SS&A O&M as a whole is also attributed to the ongoing support from the numerous sponsors and supporters who continue to back the league.

I must also thank each and every club that makes up the SS&A Ovens & Murray and the tireless work club presidents, committees and volunteers put in on a week to week basis. Without your efforts the O&M would not be what it is today.

To my fellow board members, may I thank you once again for your ongoing support. There are many ongoing challenges that face the league and it is encouraging that the league has such a committed and strong board to face these challenges.

With 2010 coming to a close we eagerly anticipate what 2011 will bring.

General Manager’s Report 2010

2010 has been another successful year for the SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League. The year that had an element of deja vu about from 2009 with Albury once again prevailing over Yarrawonga in senior football and Yarrawonga once again accounting for Wangaratta Rovers in A grade netball. In addition to the on field highlights in 2010, the League continued to grow with a number of exciting projects, announcements and achievements taking place.Highlights of 2010 through the GM’s desk

grade of netball in 2012As indicated above, there is some fantastic work being completed at Club level. It is a credit to the Ovens & Murray clubs, their volunteers and sponsors who in 2010, have once again produced some great results for their communities. The focus of the League earlier in the year was playing its role as a member of the NEUB and supporting the newly appointed director of coaching, Dale Gleeson. This involved recruiting the services of AFL Umpires Manager Jeff Gieschen to visit the area on two occasions; once to speak to the umpires; and a second time speaking to our coaches and club delegates. This was a worthwhile exercise that promoted the message of ‘umpiring is everyone’s business’ - a tag that I believe all clubs respected throughout the 2010 season.Once the season began, the focus of the League’s attention moved towards leadership and governance of clubs. This focus coincided with the release of the VCFL’s ‘For the love or Money?’ Player Remuneration Guide. The guide was developed to showcase best practise for country football netball clubs with education as its focal point. It was forwarded to each club and the League tracked the various chapters through the Critic on a weekly basis in order to educate and create discussions amongst clubs, their members and spectators. In addition to the guide, the League recruited the expertise of Our Community CEO Patrick Moriarty who spoke to all clubs on the importance of governance and having the appropriate checks and balances in place when leading

a club. Interesting points raised by Patrick included the Four Pillars of good governance – Accountability, Disclosure, Transparency and Independence. In 2011 the League plans to put some steps in place to improve the transparency between the clubs and the League. Once again the League sponsors and partners united behind the competition with principal partner the SS&A Club entering its second year of a three year deal, continuing its long association with Ovens & Murray Football and Netball. In the off season the Club appointed a new CEO in Tim Levesque. Tim is a local identity, not unfamiliar with the League, who brings some exciting entertainment experience to the club but also to the League. The League looks forward to continuing its great partnership with the Club and developing it further beyond 2011.The League introduced three new partners to the O&M community in 2010 with Jayco Albury Wodonga supporting the Club Championship Awards, Bev Marks Wodonga coming on board to support the Hot Shot awards and Generations, Personal and Professional Advice forming a valuable association with the League in sponsoring the club umpire uniforms. We thank them for their support and hope they enjoyed their first year with the League. To our other sponsors and supply partners of Trotman Accountants, KFC, Jacob Toyota, Prime TV, 2AY, QantasLink, Morris Wines, Commonwealth Bank, Coca Cola, Victor Sports, Lyon sportswear, and Burley Sekem - thank you.The League also thanks its numerous media partners in Prime TV, WIN TV, 2AY, 3NE, ABC, Oak FM, the Border Mail, Wangaratta Chronicle and Mid Week Xpress in providing fantastic media coverage to the League. Hall of Fame The 2010 Hall of Fame inductees included Wangaratta Rovers Laurie Burt, Wodonga’s Ernest Whitehead, Albury Tiger Terry Cross, Benalla’s Emmy De Fazio and late Magpies player Tim Lowe from Wangaratta. Once again the inductees stole the night and all spoke from the heart, sharing some great memories with everyone in the room. It was a fantastic evening and is certainly the premier evening on the O&M calendar. 285 guests shared the night which is a testament to the club support for the evening. Special thanks to Ron Montgomery, the Hall of Fame committee and MC on the night Phil Nolan, who once again added the personal touch and zest to the night.Morris Medal NightCongratulations to all our award winners on Morris Medal Night, especially the winner of the Morris Medal – Jamie Allan (Wangaratta), the Netball A Grade Best & Fairest winner Rebecca Didier (Corowa-Rutherglen) and the SS&A Rising Star and Diamond Star Luke McNeil (Lavington) and Saige Broz (Myrtleford).Grand Final ParadeThank you to the clubs, their players, supporters and the Schools who got behind the 2010 Grand Final Parade. Special mentions should go to Jacob Toyota, Albury City, the SS&A Club and Prime TV sports reporter Paul Murphy who contribute to the success of the event.

Joining the league after the completion of round two wasn’t an ideal start following my appointment to the Operations Officer role and all credit to a relatively smooth start to the season must go to General Manager Tom O’Connor.

With a year of operations under the Sporting Pulse online system the majority of clubs hit the ground running in 2010 and congratulations must go to the volunteers at each of the league’s 10 clubs for having everything under control despite the absence of full time operational support. On a week to week basis numerous online work as well as paperwork needs to be completed and all clubs performed duties diligently and professionally. In 2011 we hope to reduce the amount of strain put on clubs in an operational sense. Much of the current paperwork will be minimilised and a greater emphasise will be placed on the online system.

2010 saw the implementation of club umpire uniforms. This was an initiative to bring a more professional appearance to the club umpire ranks and a greater sense of identity. Thanks to Generations Personal and Professional Advice and Vision Screen Printing for their assistance in this project. Coca-Cola also came on board to provide water carrier shirts part way through the season. All clubs were allocated five shirts with their own unique

identification number. While also looking more professional the numbering system was beneficial to clamp down on any issues that had arisen throughout the season. Both these initiatives are set to continue in 2011.

The 2010 finals series continued the success of recent years with only the weather not always agreeing to play its part. This season’s Grand Final drew the third biggest ever gate on record and was only just edged out of second place by the 2008 season decider. A pleasing side note to the finals series was the fairness displayed by all teams concerned. Not one player was carded or reported during this period with the independent tribunal left with nothing to do. This however wasn’t the case for the rest of the season with David Iverson’s team called into action on numerous occasions. Once again thanks must go out to this extremely competent group of gentleman who perform an invaluable service to the league. A plan has now been put in place between all parties involved with the tribunal process to ensure smooth running for the future. Below is a record of all judicial processes throughout 2010 and a comparison to past seasons.

General Manager’s Report 2010 cont.

2011 SeasonWhat will 2011 hold for the SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League? There does seem to be a youthful movement of players within the competition. Will we see more of this in 2011? I think so. Numbers will continue to be an issue at football reserve grade level and the key will be for clubs to continue to focus attention on all three grades of football. Clubs will need to continue to engage their local community, develop their facilities, and create a positive off field environment to compete for players in the region. The League’s commitment to 2011 will include supporting the netball community in developing coaches and umpires in preparation for the fourth grade of netball in 2012. Further investigations will continue with regard to establishing a fourth grade of football in the future. And finally the League will work closely with its clubs to foster a greater transparency between club and league relations to ensure that clubs are strong and the League continues to grow.In concluding I would like to extend a special thank

you to Aaron McGlynn, the Operations Officer for the SS&A O&M League. He hit the ground running, starting two weeks into the season and he has been an integral component and driver behind the success of 2010 football and netball season. Thank you to the tireless volunteers that assist the League annually with representative football and netball, the league tribunal, gate dragons, Hall of Fame, Morris Medal and League events. Thank you to the Board Chairman Greg Claney, Vice Chairman Graeme Patterson and all Board members for their support and vision for Ovens & Murray Football and Netball. The League is very fortunate to have a very experienced and professional board who volunteer their time to lead the SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League.

O&MFNL Football Interleague Report 2010

2010 was the introduction of a new VCFL promotion/relegation ranking that would see leagues potentially move up and down in ranking between 1 and 22.

The OMFNL hosted arch rival GV at Lavington for the Ash Wilson Trophy and trialled a night game in an effort to attract a larger crowd and show case country football. Unfortunately the district leagues did not accept the offer to play their game as part of the promotion. The crowd was lower than expected on a very cold evening.

The U18s held a three quarter time lead of 5 goals and kicked 10 goals straight in the first half. GV played an inspirational last quarter out scoring the O&M, but fell short 15 points. Final score was 15-11 to 12-8.

In the cold and dewy conditions, both sides played some excellent football and were strengthened by a number of players with senior experience.

The Ash Wilson trophy match saw the O&M kick away early to a 3 goal lead, but the GV settled and narrowed the gap at quarter time. In the second quarter, the GV structured better than the O&M and kicked 5 goals to nil, with their centreline and half backs completely dominating the game. Despite a better second half by the O&M, the damage had been done and GV went onto to win 12-16 to 9-10.

This means that in 2011 the O&M will play the winner of 5 Vs 6 so loses out significantly on ranking and must ensure a win in 2011 to avoid further relegation in ranking.

Congratulations to those players selected from the game that represented the VCFL at both senior and junior levels and to Matt Pendergast on gaining “All Australian” selection after representing NSW in the national carnival.

Continuing with his fine interleague record Matt has been appointed as senior coach for 2011. We thank

our 2010 interleague coaches Robbie Jackson (assistant coach at Wodonga Bulldogs), Adam Mudra (reserves coach Wodonga Bulldogs) for their efforts this year.

On behalf of the Board of management of the OMFNL, thank you to all clubs for the support provided to the campaign. Appreciation and thanks also go to all support staff and particularly the players who made themselves available and represented their clubs and league. The League will need to review the support provided by clubs and players given the very high standard required at Interleague level and the value of the results in recruiting and promotion.

The board would also like to recognise the contribution made by the Operations Manager Aaron McGlynn and General Manager Tom O’Connor.

Thanks to the various media outlets for ongoing support to football and netball and the extensive coverage we received.

Congratulations and thanks to the VCFL major sponsors Worksafe Victoria, our local sponsors in SS&A, Prime TV, Trotmans, Lyon Sportswear, Coca Cola, KFC, Jayco, Qantaslink, Bev Marks, 2AY, Victor Sports, Jacob Toyota and to the VCFL including Area Manager John O’Donohue.

The League also recognises the efforts of the Board Members and team of the GVFL in conducting a successful match.

We look forward to a more successful 2011.

O&MFNL Netball Interleague Report 2010

2010 saw the Ovens & Murray Football Netball Open & Under 17 Representative Netball teams experience immense success once more.

Both teams progressed through from the North East Zone tournament to compete at the Victorian Association Championships held in Melbourne in June.

The Under 17 team was this year coached by Paula Cary and Tamara Mathews. It brought together a very talented and enthusiastic group of players who represented the O&M league with great excitement.

The team played at the North East tournament in May where they established themselves by winning the Under 17 section.

This saw the team progress through to the Association Championships where they finished first in their pool. The girls unfortunately bowed out in the Semi Finals but can be very proud of their efforts throughout the day.

The Most Valuable Player Award for the Under 17’s team went to Hannah Symes.

The Open side was once again coached by Fiona Boyer & Pauline O’Kane. The team had a new look about it this year with a number of players representing the O&M for the first time.

Yet again it was an exceptionally talented side, made up of the best players in the league. The side progressed straight through to the Association Championships in Melbourne after being only one of two teams that nominated for the North East Zone tournament.

The team played outstanding netball over the course of the day to cement a place in the final, for the third year running.

A slow start saw the team playing catch up, with time unfortunately beating them; the final margin being one

goal. The Most Valuable Player Award for the Open team was a tie between Sarah Davis & Ellie O’Kane.

Congratulations to all the girls who represented the Ovens & Murray Football Netball League in 2010. They did so with such hard work, determination, and pride.

Thankyou must also go to the ten clubs who supported representative netball in 2010, and who continued to encourage their players to take part in it.

A sincere thankyou once again to the following people who were part of the representative campaign the full coaching staff.

Kim Odewahn, Marion Patterson and Sarah Senini for managing the teams; Steve Senini for providing first aide; Chrissy Hooper & Jarrod Hibberson for umpiring; Tom O’Connor and Aaron McGlynn for organising and supplying food and drink, and for videoing the games; the local media outlets for their ongoing reporting and exposure of O&M netball; and the O&M Board for their continued support of representative netball.

Without the hard work and assistance provided by all of these people the league would not experience the success that it does year after year.

Once again the league is very proud of the achievements of 2010, and looks forward to ongoing success in 2011.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 OCTOBER 2010

Note 1 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

Ovens & Murray Football Netball League Ltd is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated and domiciled in Australia.

Reporting Basis and Conventions

The directors have prepared the financial statements on the basis that the company is a non-reporting entity because there are no users dependent on general

purpose financial reports. This financial report is therefore a special purpose financial report that has been prepared in order to meet the requirements of the

Corporations Act 2001 .

The financial report has been prepared in accordance with the mandatory Australian Accounting Standards applicable to entities reporting under the Corporations Act

2001 and the significant accounting policies disclosed below which the directors have determined are appropriate to meet the needs of members. Such accounting

policies are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historical costs unless otherwise stated in the notes. The material accounting

policies that have been adopted in the preparation of this report are as follows:

Accounting Policies

(a)

Inventories

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on the basis of weighted average costs.

(b) Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value as indicated less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment

losses.

Property

Freehold land and buildings are shown at their fair value (being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an

arm’s length transaction), based on periodic, but at least triennial, valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation for buildings.

In the periods when the freehold land and buildings are not subject to an independent valuation, the directors conduct directors’ valuations to ensure the land and

buildings’ carrying amount is not materially different to the fair value.

Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation reserve in equity. Decreases that offset previous increases

of the same asset are charged against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are charged to the statement of comprehensive income.

Any accumulated depreciation at the date of revaluation is eliminated against the gross carrying amount of the asset and the net amount is restated to the

revalued amount of the asset.

Plant and equipment

Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis less depreciation and impairment losses.

The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from these assets. The

recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that will be received from the assets' employment and subsequent disposal. The

expected net cash flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverable amounts.

Depreciation

The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including buildings, but excluding freehold land, is depreciated over the asset’s useful life to the company commencing

from the time the asset is held ready for use.

The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable assets are:

Class of Fixed Asset

Depreciation Rate

Buildings 2.50% PC

Plant and equipment

Motor Vehicles

10 - 50% DV

18.75% DV

The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at the end of each reporting period.

An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.

(c)

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains or losses are included in the statement of

comprehensive income. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation surplus relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

Financial Instruments

Initial Recognition and Measurement

Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument. For financial assets, this is

equivalent to the date that the company commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (i.e. trade date accounting is adopted).

Classification and Subsequent Measurement

Finance instruments are subsequently measured at either fair value, amortised cost using the effective interest rate method or cost. Fair value represents the

amount for which an asset could be exchanged or a liability settled, between knowledgeable, willing parties. Where available, quoted prices in an active market

are used to determine fair value. In other circumstances, valuation techniques are adopted.

(i) Loans and receivables

Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market and are subsequently

Loans and receivables are included in current assets, except for those which are not expected to mature within 12 months after the end of the reporting period,

which will be classified as non-current assets.

(ii) Financial liabilities

Non-derivative financial liabilities (excluding financial guarantees) are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

Fair value

Fair value is determined based on current bid prices for all quoted investments. Valuation techniques are applied to determine the fair value for all unlisted

securities, including recent arm’s length transactions, reference to similar instruments and option pricing models.

Impairment

At each reporting date, the company reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets

have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use,

is compared to the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement.

ABN: 73 791 009 822

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 OCTOBER 2010

8

Impairment testing is performed annually for goodwill and intangible assets with indefinite lives.

Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the company estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which

the asset belongs.

Derecognition

Financial assets are derecognised where the contractual rights to receipt of cash flows expire or the asset is transferred to another party whereby the entity no

longer has any significant continuing involvement in the risks and benefits associated with the asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related

obligations are either discharged, cancelled or expire. The difference between the carrying value of the financial liability extinguished or transferred to another

party and the fair value of consideration paid, including the transfer of non-cash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in profit or loss.

(d) Employee Benefits

Provision is made for the company’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee

benefits that are expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

(e) Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three

months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within short-term borrowings in current liabilities on the statement of financial position.

(f) Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. Any

consideration deferred is treated as the provision of finance and is discounted at a rate of interest that is generally accepted in the market for similar arrangements.

The difference between the amount initially recognised and the amount ultimately received is interest revenue.

Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods

and the cessation of all involvement in those goods.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which, for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. All

revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

(g) Trade and Other Payables

Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the entity during the reporting

period, which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

(h) Borrowing Costs

Borrowing costs directly attributable to the acquisition, construction or production of assets that necessarily take a substantial period of time to prepare for their

intended use or sale, are added to the cost of those assets, until such time as the assets are substantially ready for their intended use or sale.

All other borrowing costs are recognised in income in the period in which they are incurred.

(i) Goods and Services Tax (GST)

these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the

statement of financial position are shown inclusive of GST.

Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as

(j) Comparative Figures

When required by accounting standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year.

Where the company has retrospectively applied an accounting policy, made a retrospective restatement of items in the financial statements or reclassified items in

its financial statements, an additional statement of financial position as at the beginning of the earliest comparative period will be disclosed.

(k) Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgements

The directors evaluate estimates and judgments incorporated into the financial statements based on historical knowledge and best available current information.

Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are based on current trends and economic data, obtained both externally and within the

(l) Adoption of New and Revised Accounting Standards

became mandatory.

AASB 101 Presentation of Financial Statements

The company has applied the revised AASB 101 Presentation of Financial Statements which became effective on 1 January 2009. The revised standard requires

the separate presentation of a statement of comprehensive income and a statement of changes in equity. All non-owner changes in equity must now be

presented in the statement of comprehensive income. As a consequence, the company has changed the presentation of its financial statements. Comparative

information has been re-presented so that it is also in conformity with the revised standard.

The company’s financial statements now contain a statement of comprehensive income.

(m) New Accounting Standards for Application in Future Periods

The AASB has issued new and amended Accounting Standards and Interpretations that have mandatory application dates for future reporting periods and which

the company has decided not to early adopt. A discussion of those future requirements and their impact on the company is as follows:
