ALGEBRA OPERATIONS

Addition and Subtraction of Algebra

Things to know

Terms and Factors

Terms

What is the meaning of term?

• A term in an algebraic expression is an expression involving letters and/or numbers (called factors), multiplied together

• Only letters = variables• Only numbers = constants• The numbers with variables = coefficients

Example 1

• The algebraic expression5xis an example of one single term. It has factors 5 and x.The 5 is called the coefficient of the term and the x is a variable.

Example 2

• 5x + 3y has two terms.First term: 5x, has factors 5 and xSecond term: 3y, has factors 3 and yThe 5 and 3 are called the coefficients of the terms.

What is LIKE TERMS?• "Like terms" are terms that contain

the same variables raised to the same power

Example 3

• 3x2 and 7x2 are like terms• 8a and a are like terms• 6pqr and 3rqp are like terms• (3ab)2 and 10a2b2 are like terms

Example 4

• How about -8x2 and 5y2 ?• How about 4def2 and 3(def)2?• How about 3a2 and 3A2?

Adding and Subtraction of Algebra

• IMPORTANT RULE!

We can only add or subtract like terms

Example 5

• Solve this..!a. 5p2 + 2p – 3p2

b. 5x-4y+6y-7xc. 4u+3t-2u-2t

MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION OF ALGEBRA

REFRESH..!!!

• 5a x 6b = 30ab• 5a x 5a = 25a2

• 5abc x 5cab = 25a2b2c2

Algebra Factorisation

• x (x + a ) = x2 + ax• x (x + a +b ) = x2 + ax +bx• (x + a) (x + b ) = x2 + bx + ax + ab• (x + a) (x + y – b) = x2 + xy – bx + ax +ay -ab

example

• (in book)

Division of Algebra

• 3z : z = 3• 5abc : 5cab = 1• 25a2 : 5a = 5a

So, what is the rule?

• We can cancel the same factors to get the result.

Example

• (in book)
