but also joy, humour, and love.
O, THE OPRAH MAGAZINE

assurance, intelligence, and a rare
musicality that keeps the readerglued to whats understandably
wrenching subject matter. She is

Why do rational people buy notions that seem
utterly incredulous? (And that includes you)

Drawing on neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and socialpsychology, Matthew Hutson takes us on a ascinating tour

health, creativity, social intelligence, and, yes, good

and embrace your magical thinking instead.

From the Magna Carta to the Falklands, here are
the 10 years that made Britain, or better and or

1215: The Magna Carta. 1415: Henry V. 1588: Deeat o the
Spanish Armada. 1688: The rst Bill o Rights. 1815: Water-

moments o military triumph (sometimes accidental) and
acts o democratic ideal (despite the monarchy).
Was the longbow behind the victory at Agincourt, or was
it just that the English are better in mud? Did Queen
Elizabeth I know the Armada had capitulated when she
drated one o historys most inspiring speeches? Where
did Wellington meet his Waterloo? Was the Falklands proo
o Mrs Thatchers steel or a grasping, imperial olly? Veteran
political reporter Colin Brown a true expert in spin
travels to the places where history was made to unearth
the real story o what makes Britain great.
COLIN BROWN is the author o the acclaimed history

The longbow was a fearsome weapon when used against massed
ranks, but it could not penetrate the steel plate of French armour.
At Azincourt, the symbol of the longbow is everywhere, but I
discovered a very different story behind Henry Vs victory buried in
the archives of the Royal Armouries.
The night before, the eld had been churned into a quagmire by
the French cavalry, who had decided to exercise their horses there.
According to Andrew Palmer, Professor of Engineering at Cambridge,
Azincourts soil is particularly prone to creating suction when wet.
As the French marched forward on the day of battle, they were
sucked down, falling over each other. By the time they reached theEnglish, they were exhausted by the weight of their steel armour
wrestling with the mud. The English abandoned their longbows and
slit their foes throats with bollock daggers or smashed their heads
with hammers. The elegant archers were, in reality, butchers.

LIKE A VIRGINExploring the Frontiers o Conception
Aarathi Prasad
A rising star o pop science investigates whether
virgin birth might be possible in the near uture
and what it will mean to the amily
Most cultures tell the tale o a maiden who gives birth
untouched by a man, and in the wild there are plenty
o creatures turkeys, komodo dragons, sharks, and
the Jesus Christ lizard (which walks on water, too) that take various approaches to making babies without
having sex. Soon, humans will have that option, too.
In Like a Virgin, biologist Aarathi Prasad examines
inconceivable ideas about conception, rom Paracelsuss
recipe or creating a child (bury semen in manure or 40
days) to the search or a true virgin mother, spurred by
the geneticist Helen Spurway, in the 1950s tabloids. She
then takes us to maverick labs that are inventing sex-
less reproduction, rom egg-ertilizing computer chips
to articial wombs or men. Prasad delivers a highly
provocative, entertaining look at the mysteries o sex
and evolutionary biology past, present, and uture.
AARATHI PRASAD is a biologist and science writer.
She has appeared on TV and radio programmes,
including as host o the BBC Radio 4 documentaryThe Quest or a Virgin Birth, and has written or

ORWELLS COUGHDiagnosing the Last Gasps and MedicalMaladies o the Great Writers
John Ross
The Bard meets Stifin this marvellous medical
investigation o literary legends
Did Shakespeares doctors addle his brain with mercury
vapour, leading to his premature retirement? WasJane Eyre
inspired by the plagued school that eventually claimed the
entire Bront clan? Did writing 1984 kill George Orwell?
Many o our most beloved scribes struggled to conquer not
just writers block but a bevy o maladies, which shaped
the characters and stories they crated. John Ross opens his
surgery to consult with the likes o Milton, Swit, Melville,

With novelistic air and deep expertise, Ross reveals a

Joy Hendry and Simon Underdown
Discover the biological and social origins o our species
Anthropologists Joy Hendry and Simon Underdown ofer the rst in-
troductory guide to explore both the biological and social study o

eared in seventeenth-century England but is embraced in contempo-
rary Sudan, as well as what our relationship with mobile phones (and
the bathroom) tells us about ourselves. Covering key study topics, in-
cluding heirarchy, social identity, rites o passage, and the impact o
globalization, this is the essential rst step to understanding anthro-
pology or students and people working in the globalized world alike.

Worlds, in its second edition. SIMON UNDERDOWN is Senior Lecturer
