Why is globalization significant for

organizational behavior?

Globalization

Globalization refers to the integration of economics and societies all over the world. Globalization involves technological, economic, political, and cultural exchanges made possible largely by advances in communication, transportation, and infrastructure.

Globalization

What is culture and how can we understand cultural differences?

Culture

The system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning.

Understanding Cultural Differences

Everything ok” is shown in western European countries, especially between pilots and divers, with the sign of the thumb and forefinger forming an „O”. This sign means in Japan „now we may talk about money”.

Laughing is connoted in most countries with happiness - in Japan it is often a sign of confusion, insecureness and embarrassment.

Understanding Cultural Differences

In Korea and most other Asian countries, in universities it is considered to be rude to interrupt the professor during the lecture whereas in Western countries it is considered good to ask questions during a lecture if necessary.

In Persian and Pakistani cultures, if a person offers an item (i.e. a drink), it is customary to not instantly accept it. A sort of role play forms with the person offering being refused several times out of politeness before their offering is accepted. In many other cultures, it would be considered polite for the person offering to only ask once, so as to respect the other person's wish when the offer is declined.

Understanding Cultural Differences

How does cultural diversity affect people at

work?

Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity is a term used to mean that a group or area contains people from many different cultures and backgrounds. These areas are considered diverse because everyone is unique and different.

How Cultural Diversity Affects (Case Study)

Lydia, Asian-American, was being praised by her fellow team members in front of the whole department.  Although Lydia, born in the U.S., was usually very relaxed and smiled freely, suddenly her beautiful smile disappeared.  The meeting head steered the conversation elsewhere and then, during the break, asked her if something was wrong−after all, her fellow teammates were praising her!  She replied, "In my culture we are extremely embarrassed to be praised in public."  What is rewarding in one culture may be punishing in another.

How Cultural Diversity Affects

What is a global view on organizational learning?

Organizational Learning

Organizational learning is an area of knowledge within organizational theory that studies models and theories about the way an organization learns and adapts.
