FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
NIST is fortunate to have a line of alumni who have done us proud. From having their
snaps on cover pages of Company Annual Reports, to getting Chairman’s Awards, to
being entrepreneurs in education, software, products and the list goes on. But the joy is
unparalleled when we find alumni doing things which we never thought of or trained them for.
One such student Jubanashwa Mishra (2002-06) recently took the unbeaten track to do 28 jobs
in 28 weeks in 28 states to prove that we can do almost anything if we have a passion for it. In
the process he toyed with being a sevak at a temple to a photographer to a boatdriver to a TRP
data analyst. The other alumni Dilshad Ayubi (2004-08) produced a film “Sanjeeda” all of 11
minutes being financed by Eastern Railways on being alert during train travel which will be
screened in all railway stations. We are proud of you.
The country is in the throes of electing its 16th Lok Sabha and simultaneously the Orissa Vidhan Sabha. As responsible
citizens of a democratic country we need to go out and vote. The price of democracy is for citizens to be ever
vigilant. This time we have new ideological parties such as AAP in addition to the existing mainstream political
parties and of course we have NOTA. Hopefully, the new dispensation will lead India and Odisha to rapid development.
Best Wishes Sangram Mudali
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
A few days back, NIST campus reverberated with the activities of Sankalp, the ISTE sponsored techno-
management symposium. Students were found busy organising, participating, and managing the two-day
event in the most successful way. They participated in an array of competitions starting from paper
presentations, poster presentations, art competition, to robo-race, computer games, zorbing, aircraft modelling and
wall climbing where they showed the best of their skills and proving once again that they are the best among all the
students of the university by winning the Champions’ Trophy for the third time in a row.
Now students are once again busy with the on-going even semester examination. Glued to their books and study
materials they are stuck to their avowed aim of performing the best in the university. Sweating out the days in the hot
summer in writing exams and burning the midnight oil for preparing the exams, they are expected to prove that they
are equally best in their academics. The best wishes from all faculty members and staff are with you in this battle of
your life.
The students of NIST will be busy yet another time with the ensuing Employment Oriented Summer Training
Programmes scheduled to start just after the completion of the examination. Being exposed to the best in class
industrial training and certification programmes during Summer Training, the students of NIST will equip themselves
with skills which will make them industry ready. We urge every student to take up one course
appropriate for their career, be it ORACLE, Multimedia, CCNA, VLSI, CADENCE, SAP,
or courses on Spoken English or Japanese Language. The 200-hour rigorous training
programme followed by certification will benchmark the students for their placement activities
and other future endeavours.

FROM THE PLACEMENT DIRECTOR’S DESK
The even semester has come to the end and the examinations are knocking at the doors.
I wish the students of NIST ALL THE BEST for their examinations. Thanks to the
BPUT for streamlining the examinations and summer breaks. The citizens of India, as a
nation, are also preparing for the parliamentary elections. All are eagerly waiting to see a stable
and effective government which can lead our country towards a developed nation. The common
man of India needs a clean and corruption free government which can fulfil their aspirations.
The students of NIST must plan and invest their time properly during the extended summer
vacation of 2014. All the students must do at least one employment oriented summer course at
NIST and if possible get the certification. This year we have floated 27 industry oriented summer courses which will
help the students to get placed in the world class companies. These courses are designed based on the feedback
received from the recruiters and alumnus who are working in the industry. These courses will help the students in
their placement activities. During this summer break the students can apply for the Passport, Driving License, and/
or PAN card.
All the students must read some good books on personality development.
NIST is famous for the industry-relations and campus placements. NIST has received many certificates of
appreciations from the world class organizations like Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Sankalp Semiconductor,
Broadcom, etc. The industry is happy and satisfied with the quality of education & training provided at NIST.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the students of the graduating batch for doing well in the campus placements.
Best wishes to the graduates of 2014 for their future endeavours.

NATIONAL ROBOTICS COMPETITION FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN AT NISTSchool students showcased their skills in robotics during the semi-finals of the National Robotics Competition,
RobotzIndia 2013 for school children of the State held at National Institute of Science and Technology. The competition
was organised by Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Foundation (RAIF), a Chennai based non-profit organisation
with the US Consulate, with the support of the NIST Robotics Club. Named ‘the junior scientist’, over 120 school
students took part in the competition. They were trained in robotics for about two months by the engineering
students of the NIST Robotics Club. They were provided support to procure equipment from outside the State.
During the competition, these young robotics enthusiasts tested their skill of running wheeled crafts through wireless
control inside maze like arena which had several hurdles.
Students from DAV Public School, Berhampur, as well as those from St. Vincent Convent School and Sankalp
Residential School of the city were selected during the semi-finals for participation in the finals at IIT Madras
campus on Jan 28, 2014. Apart from them a large number of school going students also got interested in robotics due
to this competition. There was also competition of innovative ideas in robotics. Two models prepared by students of
DAV Public School, Berhampur, drew the attention of the audience. One of these models was that of a humanoid
which could be used by defence forces during hazardous operations. Another was a robot-farmer. This robot farmer
named Ted had the ability to check the PH level of soil, its water content and other aspects of field needed for
cultivation. It would take decision regarding sowing of seeds based on the data it procures from the soil. The
programme was coordinated by Mr Swagat Kumar Samantaray, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electronics and
Communication Engineering and Faculty Advisor, NIST Robotics Club.
CSIR FELLOWSHIP TO NIST FACULTYMr Swagat Kumar Samantaray, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electronics and Communication
Engineering, has received the CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) Fellowship to do his
Ph. D. from CSIR - Central Scientific Instruments Organization, Chandigarh.
ROBOCON 2014The members of NIST Robotics Club (NRC) participated in the national level competition of Robocon-2014 organised
by MIT Academy of Engineering, Pune during 6th to 8th March 2014. Competing with 89 participating teams from
all across the country, NRC secured 23rd position in the contest. The theme
of this year was “Salute to
Parenthood”, where each of the
teams was supposed to present two
robots, a manual (parent robot) and
an automatic (child robot) for
completing four tasks in a time span
of 3 minutes. NRC had to face
tough competition from top colleges
of the country. Only three colleges
from Odisha participated in the same where NRC stood ahead of the other
two participants from the state. Mr B. Rajanarayan Prusty, Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Electrical Engineering and NRC Faculty Advisor accompanied the students to the competition.
