PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 2
“To everything there is a season”… these words from Ecclesiastes are on one of the
stain glass windows in the conference room where the Prince of Peace staff meets. I
have looked at the window and thought I am in the season of transition. Transition is
not comfortable. There have been all kinds of changes to my regular patterns of living
that gave me comfort. I am not a person who likes to be uncomfortable but I have lived
long enough now to know that transitions are a necessary part of new beginnings. We
can go through all kinds of transitions in life; the transition of growing up, going to
different schools, getting married, moving, having a family, changing employment,
retiring, the death of loved ones, etc.. When I went to seminary to become a pastor I
had to move from California, where I taught junior high students, to Dubuque IA. I had
to downsize all my stuff to fit in a dorm room with a roommate. I had to get used to
sharing a bathroom, having someone else cook all my meals, studying most of the time
and drinking lots of diet Pepsi to stay awake.
Along with these transitions, my faith was also going through a time of growth and
change. When I was nine years old my mother died of cancer. The pain of her death
and loss of her loving presence had a profound effect on my life, shaping me in all
kinds of ways. At seminary, I thought perhaps I could find some kind of reason for her
death and my suffering. In a variety of ways, I was lead to a deeper understanding of
God, in Christ, as one who suffers with us and for us. We will suffer in this life. We will
suffer the death of our loved ones, but we do not suffer alone and suffering is not the
final word, life is! Even though the suffering I went through was painful, through Christ
and his community, that suffering has also grown compassion in me for others.
As we go through the transition of life, we know that Christ is with us and bringing us to
the abundant life he has promised.

New Additions to the Prince of Peace Library
Collection:
We ask for God’s forgiveness but it’s not as easy for
us to forgive those who hurt us. In her book How to
Forgive…When You Don’t Feel Like It, June Hunt
asks some hard questions like:
What if the other person isn’t sorry?
Isn’t forgiving letting someone off the hook for doing
something wrong?
What if it hurts too much to forgive?
What about self-forgiveness?
Hunt suggests that by not forgiving, we continue to
hurt ourselves, clinging to “rocks of resentment” and
“boulders of bitterness” that weigh us down as we
persist in carrying them. When we forgive, we free
ourselves, allowing us to be all God has planned for
us.
What’s the difference between being a fan and
being a follower? Kyle Idleman answers that
question in his book, Not a Fan—Becoming a
Completely Committed Follower of Jesus. What
does Jesus call us to be? Someone who wants the
benefits Jesus offers but isn’t willing to make the
sacrifices He asks for? Idleman challenges readers
to re-examine their relationship with Christ and
become a committed follower instead of a mere fan,
cheering from the bleachers. You may be surprised
at what you discover about yourself.
Atul Gawande’s book Being Mortal: Medicine and
What Matters in the End offers some insight into
aging, death and the limitations of medicine.
Medicine is not the only thing needed in one’s
declining years. A meaningful life, as full and rich as
it can be under the circumstances is important, too.
Through eye-opening research and personal stories
from patients, Dr. Gawande explores how to have
the hard end of life conversations and how to make
sure we don’t sacrifice what our loved ones really
care about. The book is not a clinical treatise filled
with medical terminology, but a very readable,
human and moving discussion of what’s really
important at the end to both the dying and those left
behind.

2016 Benevolence Update At the Annual Meeting on January 31, there was a lot of
interest and energy about how we should allocate our
planned benevolence in 2016. As of last 2015 Council
had voted on changing the allocations for this year. As
background, 10% of our budget is earmarked for benevo-
lence from the congregation (for 2016 that’s $61,400).
We have restored LSS and World Hunger to levels from
past years. While we’ve reduced LEAVEN from the original
budget, this is still more than we gave in 2015. We also
think there’s a great opportunity for the Congregation to
step up and do more through door offerings in 2016 –
stay tuned for more information. Thanks for your input and
energy!
At the Council meeting on February 16th we made changes
based on your input, as follows:

FAITH FORMATION
What is Faith Formation? Faith formation is a process of fellowship, learning
scripture, going to church, and learning where God fits in
each person’s life. Faith is DEVELOPED by rituals like
learning to pray, going to church, receiving a Bible, reading
the Bible, sharing in the meal and giving an offering of
ourselves — not just at church, but in the home and within
interactions with peers, elders and even strangers. We have
given Sunday School a new name – Faith Formation. It is a
lifelong journey that is enriched on Sundays but develops
each day.
PoP Kids Faith Formation Facebook Group If you are on Facebook you can keep up with everything that
the PoP kids are doing. It is a closed group, but all you have
to do is request to join. Search for us on Facebook at
“PoP Kids Faith Formation” to check it out.
6th Grade Posters & Workshop Part of the expectations for 6th grade Faith Formation
students is that they put together a poster that represents a
Bible story or Bible verse. If you are a 6th grader who would
like to work on your poster project here at church, join us on
Sun., April 17 after Faith Formation. We will meet at 10:45
in the Community Room (right outside the cinema). We will
provide materials – you provide the ideas and creativity! If
you would like to work on your project at home, but need
poster board, just ask!
April 24th Updates There has been a change in the schedule for April 24th.
Youth Participation Worships have been cancelled due to
Confirmation Sunday and Katie will be in Clintonville @
Imago Dei with the youth group. There will be a movie and
popcorn in the Holy Word Cinema at Faith Formation that
day for 1st – 6th grades.
Volunteers for 2016-17 Faith Formation Sign-Up
Starts NOW! We are already planning for the next school year! Go to the
Faith Formation Volunteer Sign-up to schedule to be a
Leader or Assistant in the Faith Formation Classes for next
year. It cannot happen without the wonderful, faithful
volunteers who share their gifts, passions and love of God
with the children.
Sharing God’s Story @ Home Please look for the ½ page Sharing God’s story @ home,
located under the FF bulletin board in the narthex. Try it at
home. It is a great way to follow what we are doing in
church each week and gives you a good chance to think of
questions to ask the pastors. Let us know what you think.
April Youth Group (Gr. 3, 4 & 5) Building Youth Groups @ Imago Dei Village. We are going
away for the weekend of April 22-24 — $65 per child,
camperships available so cost should not limit you from
going. We will leave Friday from PoP @ 5:15pm and return
Sunday afternoon. There will need to be a few parents to
help drive and 2 to stay the weekend. Please contact Katie
Witt at address above ASAP to register (registration
deadline is April 3). Forms are located on the bulletin board
across from the staff mailboxes. You can also find the
forms on the Genesis & Exodus Youth Group Section of the
Prince of Peace website.
Vacation Bible School 2016 Update Mark your calendars! Crossways Camping is coming to us!
It is going to be like going to camp in our own back yard!
VBS will be here at church this summer during the week of
July 17-22, 9am-12pm each day. Look around church;
there are signs, Registration forms, and Volunteer Forms
located in the Narthex by the Faith Formation Bulletin
Board. You can also print out the registration form from the
VBS page on PoP’s website. Feel free to contact Katie Witt
if you would like to help with the planning phase. More
details will follow.

MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL
What Gets Attention Gets Repeated
Lyle Griner, long-time youth minister, parent, and founder
of Peer Ministry Leadership, had his life ruined by an adult
in his congregation. Lyle writes, “I didn't know it at the time
but that is exactly what he did. I could have become so
many other things, but I ended up working in the church,
and I am sure it was his fault.” (Lyle is also a bit of a
comedian.) He had a Sunday School teacher who sat him
down one day at the end of his 7th grade year and said,
“Lyle, your faith is strong, I hope you do something big with
it." For Lyle, that was the beginning of the rest of his life.
My husband, Jesse, and I are living with a tyrant. He’s small
and cute, yes, but he’s also sneaky and demanding and
charmingly manipulative. He’s our 15-month old son, and
while we love him more than words can say we are often
left speechless at his growing propensity for mischief.
Owen watches me when he does things – when he climbs
on top of our kitchen table, when he touches the fireplace
window, when he drops toys down the staircase, his eyes
are on mine. But he is also watching me when he tries out
a new word, or dances to new music, or tries to follow my
instructions. He is watching me and he repeats the things I
pay attention to – the good and the bad.
Children repeat what gets attention. But you know what?
Adults do, too. That’s how we’re wired.
As a society, we tend to notice and mention the bad stuff.
We correct bad behavior. We point out rudeness and
mistakes. We shy away from praise for praise’s sake
because we don’t want to overinflate anyone’s ego… but
experience has taught me that naming what is good—
paying attention to what I’d like to see repeated—gets good
results.
As a parent, name the good things you see in your children.
Pay special attention to the characteristics, qualities, and
behaviors you hope will stick.
As a congregation, we need to affirm the living daylights out
of our young people and families. Affirm our kids and teens
for serving in worship on Sunday mornings! Affirm parents
for making time to worship when schedules easily pull us
elsewhere! Name these things. Affirm the faith that is
strong and growing. Affirm, affirm, affirm.
Because what gets attention, gets repeated.

It’s About Starting the Conversation! Learn about Advance Care Planning (ACP) -
Join us Sunday, April 17th @ 9:30 a.m. in the Congregational Life Room What if a sudden illness or injury left you unable to speak for yourself?
Who would you want to speak for you? What would you want them to know about your values and wishes?
But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. – Matthew 14:27
Jesus encourages his followers by telling them to take “heart” or “courage.” We seek inspiration to suppress our fears when we have to face illness or the possibility of death. Scripture reminds us to use our faith and trust God when we face the unknown. Many of us don’t know what to do when we or someone we love has significant health concerns. One thing we can do is to plan for the unknown, to give our self and our families the gift of Advance Care Planning (ACP). ACP is a process of deciding what you want to do and do not want for your health care choices when you can speak for yourself. The outcome of ACP is a legal document that has replaced “living wills” in our health care system. The benefit of ACP is that it communicates our health care choices to our families, doctors and hospitals. ACP is a gift we can give ourselves whether we are 18 or 88 because it means we can live peacefully, knowing our wishes will be carried out. It’s a gift to our families because they can live with the assurance that they are carrying out our explicit choices with our faith values and traditions. It’s a gift to our health care professionals so they can know what we want. It’s also a gift to the community because of the courageous conversations that occur when we discuss choices, as well as the beliefs and values that drive our choices, with people we love. Part of our call at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is leading an Advance Care Planning ministry. We encourage these coura-
geous conversations because we recognize that life could change tomorrow. We invite you to start a courageous conversation
about your faith values and how they affect your health care choices. Questions?
Contact Beth McQuistion, Ruth Moes, Pastor Roger or Cindy Romnek.
Spring New Member Classes Are you considering joining Prince

is about discovering where we
have been, where we are and where we are going. The infor-
mal session hosted by our pastors, staff and Witness Minis-
try team will also provide you the chance to figure out some
of the best places where you can belong with plenty of con-
nection opportunities for you and your family. An informa-
tional letter will be sent out in the beginning of April to all
individuals or families who are interested in joining. For
more information, contact Cindy Romnek, Pastor Roger or

We are all created with a unique blend of spiritual gifts for
the purpose of playing a role in our community. When we
use these God-given talents to support our community, we
make a lasting impression in the lives of others – and in
our own lives. As you serve, you will see God using you,
