Dear Families,
Student Leaders
This week we have been seeing democracy in action with the election of our Grade 6 student leaders! On Monday
the Grade 3-6 students broke into House groups – Mawson, Davis and Casey to elect their House & House vice–
captains, and yesterday we had the SRC election, which will determine the position of SRC President as well as the
Grade 6 executive.
It has been a big undertaking for these students who have chosen to put themselves forward for these
positions. The speeches were of a high standard with students really able to show their own, unique personalities
in this context. They had put an enormous effort into their preparation, drafting and editing their speeches before
rehearsing them in front of their own class.
The successful applicants for both House Captains and SRC will be announced on Friday afternoon.

KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM
Hello everybody! It has been an excellent start to the Stephanie kitchen year. We had new flooring installed so
goodbye old carpet, hello shiny new lino. It has really made a lovely change to the kitchen space and a very
enjoyable space to cook.
This week grades 5S, 5O and 4/5PH created recipes using vegetables from the Cucurbit family. We made a fresh
and light zucchini salad, zucchini soup, sweet zucchini muffins and a zesty lime and cucumber drink. Everybody
displayed excellent safe knife skills and an enthusiasm for tasting new things.
As is the kitchen motto, "You don't have to like it, you just have to try it!"
Thank you to volunteers who helped, it really makes for a great class environment. I look forward to this weeks
lesson.
Til next time, keep cooking!

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
The students in 1/2 Patterson/Gunn have been
looking at the 4 Bees and remembering to always have
them with them at school. They’ve talked about
breathing them in & out & having them in their
hearts. Here are the posters that Shakira & Nicholas
have made.

This week we had the exciting return
of Authors Club! It was a pleasure
to see some excited students coming

mixture of writ ing, including:
persuasive, historical narratives and recounts. It was
promising to hear one of the students ask “can we
come again?” at the end of Authors Club.
Next week we have invited a special guest to come to
Authors Club! You’ll find out who next week…
This week we had: Ruby, Acacia, Greta, Emily, Jessica,

school office.
DYSLEXIA FOCUS GROUP
Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects 10% of the
population. It is not related to intelligence but children with
dyslexia learn differently. (www.squarepegstas.org/)
At Margate Primary School, we recognise that all
students learn differently and it is our role as
educators to provide a learning environment that
supports everyone to have success. Based on the
number of students who have been diagnosed as
having a dyslexia learning difference, we have started a
new initiative for our teachers and teacher assistants
to engage in collaborative professional learning and
sharing of resources. Facilitated by our school
psychologist, Natasha Marston and utilising the
resources provided by SPELD and Square Pegs
Tasmania, we are planning to develop our skills and
expertise in the area of dyslexic learning
behaviours. For more information about Dyslexia,
please refer to this website: www.squarepegstas.org/
Last week we had our first meeting. It was really
pleasing to see the number of staff willing to give up
their time to participate in the focus group and work
together to develop our skills, knowledge and bank of
strategies to support students with a learning
difficulty. Our aim is to become a Dyslexia Friendly
School and provide a learning environment that
supports all learners.

SUN SAFE POLICY - TERM 1
In line with our Sunsafe policy,

term. The Office have hats available for purchase, or
they can be purchased directly from the Uniform
Shop.
MARGATE / SNUG MINI ROOS SOCCER
With over 196 players registered in 2016, it is with great excitement I am pleased to get the 2017 year underway:
REGO – FUN DAYS:
Open to all students from Margate and Snug Primary schools – returning and new players.
Come along and have a kick and catch up with your team.
Soccer is a world game and therefore we have mixed, boys and girls teams – depending on numbers/ages.
Kids must turn 6 in 2017 to be eligible to play.
If you’re wanting to give soccer a go or you have some questions, come along to either day:
SATURDAY 25th OF FEB – Margate School Oval
10am to 11:30am – Sneakers only
SATURDAY 4th of MARCH – Snug School Oval
10am to 12pm – Sneakers only
Changes to the 2017 Year:
Margate and Snug schools will be joining resources to form a greater community club.
This will assist us in putting more players on the pitch and expanding the game in our school and community. Both
schools and myself are excited about this partnership and look forward to the 2017 season.
Games have been schedule for the first weekend in the July school holidays. Due to last year’s weather some
teams missed out on 4 weeks of soccer over this period. The CRJSA would like to inform all coaches and parents
of this change to the 2017 season as early as possible.
Aldi Mini Roos will be launched soon and the CRJSA will be adopting this branding – there won’t be any major
changes to the games or roster formats, it is just to do with the national game and the link between our Saturday
morning games and those on the mainland.
