As we begin the ancient observance of Advent, our secular culture pushes us forward in anticipating Christmas. Even in the church, it is hard for us to "hold back" the celebration of the Word become flesh- Emmanuel- God with us! Though the world rushes ahead with advertisements of baubles and bangles, the church tries to present a counter-cultural claim that tells us to "slow down" and experience the joy of anticipation.
A little story reminds us of our need to "be still and know God." It speaks of a seeker (aren't we all?) who did not quite recognize the visitations of God.
The seeker whispered, "O God, speak to me," and a meadowlark sang but the seeker did not listen. So the seeker shouted, "O God, speak to me!" And thunder rolled across the sky but the seeker, again, would not listen. Then, the seeker, looked around and said, "O God, let me see you," and behold, a star shone brightly, but the seeker did not take notice of it. Again, the seeker shouted, "My good God, show me a miracle," and a baby was born, but the seeker did not even think about it. Instead, the seeker cried out in despair, "Touch me, dear God, and let me know that you are still here!" Whereupon, God reached down and touched the seeker, but the seeker brushed off the butterfly and walked away, never knowing.
May these Advent and Christmas seasons provide you ample opportunities to experience God more fully. Please take time to be still… and to hear, see, feel, and know God. A blessed Christmas to you and yours,
Pastor Jeff Pastor Cindy

James 1:2-5,9 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and
sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let
perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking
anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all
without finding fault, and it will be given to you. Believers in humble circumstances
ought to take pride in their high position.
When it comes to stewardship, we sometimes find ourselves motivated to give more
of our finances or service than we actually have. We are aware of great needs and
truly want to contribute, but find ourselves without means. In James, we have the
assurance that God will provide the wisdom we need to decide how much we can
give to our church and to those in need.
But he also mentions the value of being in humble circumstances. We get to trust
God to maximize our growth experience through the trial. We know that God will help
us make progress in our spiritual maturity.
As we approach the Advent season, we will become aware of those who are having
a difficult time. It is upon us to help where we can, and trust God for the rest.
