ICADUpstarts
08A winning entry solution for the 2008 ICADUpstarts exhibition. The brief was to create a visualidentity for the Irish Olympics in 2016.
The Rationale.
The logo which i have devised is a
strong, bold and energetic statement
which i believe in turn reects the cityand people of Dublin. Ireland in the
21st century is a nation in a constant
state of Flux. We are embracing newnationalities while still being proud of
our own heritage.
The logo consists of strong geometric shapes, from these shapes
Dublin emerges. The white space within the logo creates a
dynamic effect and along with the somewhat abstract lettering
should insure the logos longevity. The white space in turnconveys a feeling of the city on a physical level in terms of its
compact size and planning. In essence the logo represents the
coming together inharmony of many different elements. Just
like the city itself is divided by the river liffey, so to is this
division apparent within the logo. But divisions are made to be
broken! The Olympic rings stands at the centre of the logo,
breaching the gap, a unifying symbol bringing people together
on a level playing eld. The division among the letters becomes
more about an out strethed arm which unites all the letters of
the word Dublin.
The strong geometric feel is counter balanced by the curved
lettering while a playful notion is represented in the letter
D. This mouth like shape symbolises the Irish and our love of
talking and getting to know one another. While the lettering
may seem abstract at rst, 2016 is unmistakabley identifyable.
Numbers are a universal language and for this reason i decidedto place the year below the logo in a prominent position while
still working in harmony with the logo above. I feel this logo is
highly compact and versatile identity and could be implemented
in many ways through out the Olympic games. For example the
pattern of the logo creates a highly seductive and enegetic feel
which could be applied to hoardings whether it be around the
olympic stadium or at press conferences. The colour scheme i
used for the logo is an eye catching yellow reecting the energy
and vitality of the Games. I feel this solution is a courageous
and striking design which would symbolise a new Ireland to
the rest of the world.
