So You’ve Identified…Aggression, Disruptions, Off Task, Non-Compliance, Unprepared, SocialSkills…..Now What?
or
I’ve Got This Kid That …Talks-Out, Fights, Out-ofSeat, Pushes, Won’t Follow Directions, DistractsOthers, Mean Spirited etc, etc….HELP!!
Agenda
1. What is the RIDE: Behavior Intervention Bank
2. Background and supporting evidence
3. Relationship between achievement and social behavior

Behavior Intervention Bank
• Part of a U.S. Department of Education validated program for students at-risk for social and academic failure
• Interventions matched to six major problem behaviors
• Aligned with primary elements of RtI and PBIS
• Continuous literature review of evidence-based interventions
Features
104 written interventions, 50 video demonstrations
focusing on:
• Aggression; • Disruptions; • Non-compliance; • Off-Task; • Social Skills; and • Unprepared
Features
• Five Progress-Monitoring options for social behavior
• Graphic display of individual behavior plans
• Intervention plans saved for review
The Idea..
Using an RtI and PBIS framework, provide
research-based “Interventions” that are:
easily-accessible practical, user-friendly, and cost-effective
Includes…Guidelines in working with challenging behavior
• Preventing inappropriate behavior
• Determining function of behavior
• Matching problem behaviors with interventions by:• Antecedent, Instruction or Consequence• Grade level
• Linking intervention with progress monitoring option
Users Include..
• Classroom teachers• Professional support staff • Teacher-trainers• Professionals (private practice)• Parents
Users ….
–Enter student(s) name(s)–Select target behavior–Select intervention from either a populated
list or develop custom-made–Select goals and timelines–Select a Progress Monitoring option
• Frequency, Percent, Latency, Duration or Magnitude• Enter up to 50 daily counts• Make notes when exceptional counts occur
Users can…
• Generate graphic reports with option to display both “increase and decrease” goals as well as observation notes
• Link to other resources – Related products– Current research projects with contact
information
Who is RIDE—BIB For?
ANY STUDENT (general, remedial, or special education) who is experiencing learning or behavioral problems
A little background……
Supporting Evidence
Approved and validated by the U.S. Department of Education for students at-risk for social and academic failure
• 45% reduction in special education referrals- Great Falls MT, Baltimore MD, El Paso TX
• 70% of classroom problem behaviors showed significant improvement
- Great Falls MT, Salt Lake City UT, Lafayette LA, Casper WY
• Validated by GA State Department of Education
Managing students with
behavior challenges…
Trends & Research
• From an often “negative consequence” paradigm
• To a more “positive” approach (Positive Behavioral
Interventions & Supports)
• More recently a closer review of the relationship between behavior and academics
The Relationship Between Academic Achievement and Social Behavior
Behavior and Reading Improvement Center UNC—Charlotte
• Five-year study of reading and a behavior support program
• Followed 350 K—2 students• Questions:
– Is there is a correlation between academic achievement and social behavior?
– Is there is a functional relationship (cause and effect) between academic achievement and social behavior?
– Is there is a functional relationship (cause and effect) between reading and behavior problems?
Questions & Answers
1. Is there a correlation between academic achievement and social behavior?
YES2. Is there a functional relationship (cause and effect)
between academic achievement and social behavior?
AND
Is there a functional relationship (cause and effect) between social behavior and academic achievement?
NO
Practical Outcomes
TEACH BOTH!
• TEACH reading to achieve better reading skills
• TEACH behavior to achieve better social skills

Five Key Elements of RtI
1. Assessment (find ‘em)
2. Interventions (do something with ‘em)
3. Progress Monitoring (watch ‘em)
4. Data-based Decisions (change, if it’s not working)
5. Instructional Modifications (try, try again)

RIDE Update 2010
Behavior Intervention Bank
Our Task
• Search current literature and identify research-based interventions that are practical and user-friendly
• Offer short, two-page interventions with brief classroom video examples, progress monitoring options and
• Deliver online.
Steps
• Asked teachers to reaffirm problem behaviors• Conducted literature review• Rewrote journal articles without technical jargon • Focused on “interventions”• Included new video demonstrations• Added progress-monitoring options for social behavior
Update
• Reviewed 180 articles from 58 journals and 18 professional texts
• Selected 104 interventions, 90% with citations 1990 – 2008; 52% with citations 2000 - 2008
• Produced 50 video demonstrations linked to selected interventions
• Developed five progress-monitoring options

One-day Training --Optional
• Training Objectives…– Reviewing basics of RtI and PBIS – Matching “problem behavior” with “interventions”– Developing intervention plans– Selecting progress monitoring options– Practicum (case examples)
Closing Thought…
Our Premise…. If practitioners are provided training and resources (interventions) that are proven, practical and easily accessible……they’ll use them
If practitioners are offered inadequate training, complicated and time-consuming interventions ….they won’t use them
“What is an intervention in one school is common practice in another”
