LETTER FROM THE CHAIRLETTER FROM THE CHAIRLETTER FROM THE CHAIRLETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Resident
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEWS
Neighbour Watch is all about crime prevention, and reducing the upset and
disruption caused to Three Crosses residents both individually and collectively.
Criminals, in this area, tend to be opportunistic so it is important that:
You keep house doors locked at all times, especially back doors. Front
doors are normally kept locked, but back doors are often unlocked.
You keep your car locked at all times outside the house.
Any items, such as coats, pc’s, tablets, etc. in your car, are out of site.
Also criminals will be deterred if
You have a security alarm fitted
External lights activated by motion or heat sensors
Stone/gravel drive access to your home. They do not like to make noise.
Easy access to the back of your house is prevented by gates that lock.
Garden sheds that are locked and alarmed.
Although there are very few incidents of theft and burglary in Three Crosses, these
relatively simple precautions can make it far less likely that you will become
victims of such crime.
Obviously, if you see any crime happening, you need to phone 999 immediately.
However, if you see something suspicious phone 101 and report it. Any
intelligence of this nature is really important to the police, and they will use it to
nip problems in the bud.
Local Development Plan (LDP) Update
In our last Newsletter, we said there were only 2 major candidate sites, which are
still under consideration for future development. Further information indicates
that the proposal will be for 20 residences on the land between the Poundffald
and Cefn Draw farm, and 15 residences on the land behind Dunvant Road and
Crwys farm.
The draft Deposit Plan will be produced in the New Year, and will be subject to a
full consultation exercise at that time.
On behalf of myself and the Community Councillors, I would like to wish you a
happy, healthy, prosperous and safe New Year.

BIODIVERSITY SURVEY – FINAL REPORT On the 25
th November a number of residents attended a presentation at the
Community Centre where the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales gave a
presentation about the work that they had done in the village together with their
recommendations for discussion. The full report can be found at the website
www.threecrosses.org.uk or a copy may be obtained from the Clerk of the
Community Council if you are interested.
The purpose of this article is to attempt to summarise both the report and the
recommendations, a difficult task for a report of some 60 A4 pages. The
recommendations themselves will be covered in the Newsletter on an ongoing
basis as particular actions are taken – but are again summarised below.
The rationale of the survey and report was to undertake an ecological survey of
the Three Crosses concentrating on vegetation, invertebrates, mammals, birds,
reptiles and amphibians with three main aims:
1. To provide baseline ecological data for the Village of Three Crosses
2. To provide recommendations and future management advice and proposals
3. To involve the community as much as possible with regard to surveys and
future management proposals
The survey area focused on the five routes through the village and open spaces
within the village.
The surveys produced a number of interesting outcomes and lots of great
photographs.
1. Breeding Bird Surveys – these were carried out in May and June and involved
our naturalists getting up at dawn and noting all species seen or heard along the
routes. In total 53 species of birds were recorded including the nesting behaviour
of Tawny Owl, Swallow, House Martin and House Sparrow. A number of the bird
species recorded are of conservation interest for example cuckoo, linnet, dunnock,
house sparrow and song thrush. Apparently we have a particularly thriving house
sparrow community with no causes for concern!

2. Botanical Surveys – this covered the road verges and yielded 199 different
species in total. Whilst no particularly rare native species were recorded there
are a number of areas with woodland-type plants and good level of diversity. A
total of 15 species were found on the banc, however 66 were found in the
meadow behind the Chapel. Full lists of the flora can be found in the full report.
Non-native species were recorded in a number of locations –Japanese Knotweed,
Himalayan Balsam and Three Cornered Garlic.
3. Reptile Surveys – The reptile surveys were conducted by placing a corrugated
metal sheet for a week and then reviewing what was lurking underneath. Slow
works and a single grass snake were the only ones actually found under the sheets
although grass snakes and common lizards were also seen in the village during the
survey period. Other animals seen under the sheets included Field Vole, Common
Shrew and Common Toad.
Community Involvement
As well as the naturalists work, there were three Community Events – two bat
walks, the second incorporating a moth-trap event and a butterfly walk. We have
reported on these in previous editions of the Newsletter, but suffice to say they
were enjoyed by all who attended and yielded information for the survey.
Camera Traps and Moth Traps were placed in the gardens of those that
volunteered. The camera traps captured footage of a fox and badger at night
which was shown at the meeting as well as a blackbird feeding its young right in
front of the camera. Over the project 125 species of moths were recorded and
you will have seen the pictures in our July, August, September edition of the
Newsletter.
The survey specifically did not cover the Crwys Woodland Area as a separate
survey is planned for this part of the village. It was however observed by the
naturalists to be a very biodiverse area.
Results
The results of all the survey work and events throughout the summer have
demonstrated that Three Crosses has good and diverse species both breeding and
using the area to feed. However there are undoubtedly improvements that can be
made to ensure that the village is even more welcoming to wildlife.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The main recommendations focus on further encouraging native wildlife in the
village and taking steps to reduce/eradicate those non-native species that are
increasing around the village. Generally, this will see the use of more native
species of wildflower planting to encourage more native butterflies/moths etc.
The areas under consideration:
The Banc – create a wavy uncut strip between grass and hedge line to encourage
native plant growth, butterflies and small mammals.
Triangle of Land on Tirmynydd – leave areas uncut around the trees and develop
a pond environment to link up with the proposed Village Pump.
Gowerton Road Banc – plant a strip of wildflowers by the fence and leave parts of
the grass near the bottom to grow long.
Old School House – consider reroofing with a bat friendly material, install roosts
and potentially a camera system for nature observation. Install an interpretation
board on the outside of the building.
Community Centre – install bat roosts, house martin nests on the building. Plant a
wildflower strip by the front fence and install interpretation boards that cover the
wildlife of Three Crosses.
The Chapel Meadow was considered to be a particularly fine area for biodiversity,
so suggestions are made about putting up Barn Owl nest boxes and that the
school might further use it for educational purposes.
At the meeting there was much interest in the proposals, as well as exploring the
idea of creating a more interactive website to regular monitor the wildlife in the
village.
The event closed with a buffet and other refreshments. Pictures of the event and
our wildlife may be found on the back page of the Newsletter.
The Trust Committee then considered the recommendations at the meeting on
Thursday November 20th
and has put together a plan with timings. Clearly, a
number of the recommendations require the Community Council to liaise with
other parties in the village. Further information will be available on the website
and in the Newsletter.
