National Geospatial Advisory Committee
Sub-committee Purpose
“Provide recommendations on approaches to develop intergovernmental and public-private strategies to facilitate the development, training, and retention of a highly skilled workforce to meet the expanding geospatial needs of public and private-sector organizations.”
National Geospatial Advisory Committee
Sub-committee Activities Research and assess geospatial workforce-related
studies and activities completed, currently planned or underway, including the following: Research current and future needs Research to assess what already exists Identify best practices Define gap between “need” and existing/projected workforce
Develop initial recommendations on how FGDC can engage in and support geospatial workforce development activities

Geospatial Technology Competency Model
The Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM) is depicted as a pyramid with nine tiers The model illustrates how occupational and industry
competencies build on a foundation of personal effectiveness, academic, and workplace competencies Each tier consists of one or more blocks representing the skills,
knowledge, and abilities essential for successful performance in the industry or occupation represented by the model
At the base of the model, competencies apply to a large number of occupations and industries. As a user moves up the model, the competencies become industry- and occupation-specific
The model specifies competencies required for worker success in the geospatial industry

Tier One: Personal Effectiveness Competencies Tier Two: Academic Competencies Tier Three: Workplace Competencies Tier Four: Industry-Wide Technical Competencies Tier Five: Industry Sector Technical
Competencies Tiers Six-Nine: Occupation-Specific
Competencies and Requirements (not defined)
National Geospatial Advisory Committee
Geospatial Technology Competency Model Expected uses of the GTCM include career
guidance, curriculum development and assessment, recruitment and hiring, continuing professional development, criteria for voluntary certification, and outreach efforts intended to communicate characteristics of the geospatial field to the public
The GTCM is not intended to suggest a sequence of competency attainment or that certain competencies are of greater value or higher skill than others

Defining and Communicating Geospatial Industry Workforce Demands Project Objectives
1. Define the diverse geospatial industry components, characteristics, and skills required to fill geospatial occupations
2. Develop an public outreach program and informational materials about those industry components for distribution through existing DOL-supported education and information channels, to address public awareness of geospatial technologies, and to make a better connection between the geospatial industry and diverse populations of potential workers
3. Pilot and demonstrate a Web portal for providing current location-based industry demand information correlated with educational and workforce opportunities
4. To pilot and demonstrate a specific application of these new outreach materials and geospatial intelligence information tools and methodology in a particular geographic area

UCGIS – Geographic Information Science & Technology Body of Knowledge GIS&T Bok1 focused on creating and maintaining a
current Body of Knowledge in the multi-disciplinary field of Geographic Information Science and Technology
GIS&T Bok2 will extent GIS&T BoK1 to enable the maintenance and expansion of the knowledge base in a more dynamic, interactive, and collaborative manner
A new environment will be developed to provide for more innovative ways of understanding and experiencing the GIS&T BoK and help to facilitate teaching, research, and professional advancement
National Geospatial Advisory Committee
UCGIS – Geographic Information Science & Technology Body of Knowledge The GIS&T BoK2 project will:
Map out the strengths and weakness of the BoK1 and develop a more comprehensive and inclusive organizing framework for BoK2
Examine a methodology for generating ontology Develop visually interactive representations of the
GIS&T knowledge domain Examine and test different environments for realizing
the Bok2
