Conceptual Design Overview

MISSIONOVERVIEW
Mission OverviewOur goal is to be able to record the attitude of our satellite and recover 3D video and images
of the flight.
We expect to prove that 3D cameras are not economical for missions that do not focus on
imaging
We are doing this mission to test a technology that is in the forefront of accessible science and
to evaluate it’s pros and cons for future missions.
Mission statementOur primary mission is to measure the
orientation of our satellite, Shaniqua, during launch using a gyroscope, which will utilize angular momentum to determine the orientation of the satellite on a three-axis scale, as well as determine how much the satellite rotates over the course of the flight. We also plan to develop 3D images using two identical cameras. We will test the 3D imaging capability of cameras in near space without the use of a reference point.
mission objectivesI. To design and prepare a balloon
satellite ready to launch by December 1, 2012.
II.To use a gyroscope to determine and record the orientation and rotation of the satellite during flight.
III.To use two cameras to capture 3D images and film the entire launch using a GoPro camera.
IV.Follow all of the requirements of the RFP.
Main Mission Requirements
❖ Our design will feature a gyroscope that includes an additional sensor and collects data about the rotation and torque of our satellite.
❖ Flight string interface tube shall be a non-metal tube through the center of the BalloonSat and shall be secured to the box so it will not pull through the BalloonSat or interfere with the flight string.
❖ Internal temperature of the BalloonSat shall remain above -10°C during the flight.
❖ Total weight shall not exceed 1125 grams.❖ Ascent and descent rates of the flight string shall be acquired.❖ An external temperature sensor will be included.❖ An active heater system shall be included weighing 100 grams with
batteries❖ BalloonSat shall be made of foam core❖ Our budget and parts list shall include spare parts.❖ Our BalloonSat shall have contact information written on the outside
along with a US Flag❖ Units shall be metric.❖ Our BalloonSat shall be ready to launch by December 1st, 2012❖ Our design shall have visual indicators on the outside of the flight
structure to confirm at launch that the payload is active and running.
