Unit 5: The Civil War

Notes: The Election of 1860

(DO NOT WRITE)In 1858, Lincoln said:

“A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand. I believe this

government cannot endure, (last) permanently half slave and half

free. I do not expect the Union to be

dissolved (break apart)-- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all

the other.”

Religious Reference: Matthew 12:25…

What is “The House”?

I. Political Parties SplinterA. 2 Democrat Parties:

We offer the choice of the NationOur Chieftain so brave and so trueWe’ll go for the great reformation

For Lincoln and Liberty too

We’ll go for the son of KentuckyThe hero of Hoosierdom too

The Pride of the sucker so luckyFor Lincoln and Liberty too

They’ll find what by felling and bawling

our railmaker statesman can doFor the people are everywhere are

callingFor Lincoln and liberty too

Then up with the banner so gloriousThe star spangled red white and blueWe’ll fight till our banner’s victorious

for Lincoln and Liberty too

Our David’s good slinger unerring

The “slave-o-crat’s” giant he slew

Then shout for the freedom preferring

For Lincoln and Liberty too

III. Southern Secession

A. Southerners warned that they would secede if Lincoln wonB. They said they voluntarily joined the US, so they can leave if they want to…this is a demonstration of their “STATES’ RIGHT”

C. Dec. 20. 1860 S. Carolina SecededD. In the next 6 wks MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX also seceded.E. Feb 1861: Those 7 states became the CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA.

i. Jefferson Davis became president.

IV. Union Response to Secession

A. N. sees secession as UNCONSTITUTIONAL; we are ONE NATION, not a GROUP of states.B. N. sees the S. as poor losers…can’t live by the rules of democracy so they quit.

DO NOT WRITE:“The Southerners’ quarrel is not with the

Republican Party, but with the theory of Democracy”

What’s the POINT?

• Lincoln’s election causes the south to secede

• The south thinks it’s their right to leave
