Musical ScoresWhat emotions do these movie

scores create?

Types of Sound and Listening

O Causal listening – the listening of a sound in order to gather information about its cause or source.

O Example: We hear clanging. What is the cause of the noise? We then see men digging an underground tunnel. We know what they are doing and wonder what the tunnel’s purpose is.

Types of Sound and Listening

O Semantic listening – listening for the purpose of gaining information about what is communicated in the sound and language

O Example: A man is running down the street screaming, “Run for your lives!” The running and shouting tell us the man is scared, and we should be too.

Types of Sound and Listening

O Reduced listening – the listening for the purpose of focusing on the qualities of sound itself such as pitch or tone, which is independent of its source or meaning.

O Example: We hear the “Da dum. Da dum. Da dum da dum da dum…” of the theme song to Jaws. The background music creates a feeling of fear and danger.
