Definition Essay:
Bromance
What defines the friendships we receive? We have acquaintances, friends to
best friend. For women there are BFF’s, but what is there for men? Well there’s a
simple term for it, bromance. This term has been appearing all over social medias,
films and tv shows, the internet and personal discussions between individuals. But
not a lot of people understand the meaning or what it means to have a “bromance.”
A bromance has been defined by multiple different sources. Urban
dictionary has defined it as "describes the complicated love and affection shared
between two straight males." And Wikipedia defines it as "A closed non-sexual
relationship between two (or more) men." These web sources can be unreliable, so
from personal experience my definition for a bromance is a friendship between two
or more (usually straight males) that has excelled what is usually expected.
Bromances have been around for a long time but only recently has the word
occurred in society through various social media outlets like films and tv shows
and even YouTube. I have looked through these resources and a personal
interview I conducted with two very good friends of mine that currently have a
bromance and the feedback of my research was quite revealing. I found one
particular YouTube video called Bromance by nigahiga and it clearly illuminates
what a bromance is through hilarious lyrics and comical visuals. It was surprising
to me that this song could be so informational but yet incredibly amusing and
catchy at the same time. The movie I Love You, Man was also very helpful to my
research. The movie is set up like a romantic comedy where the protagonist, Peter
Klaven, needs to find a best man for his wedding and meets a man named Syndey
Fife who after the main conflict of the film becomes his best friend and creates a
hilarious bromance. I found an excellent example of a bromance in an episode of
Seinfeld i watched. In the episode Jerry and George are mistaken for a gay couple
because of how very close friends they are. The Playstation 2 game series of Jak
and Daxter has the two main protagonists on an epic adventure that tests every
strength and weakness about them and throughout the series they support each
other in the darkest of times.
Out of all the research I have gathered the most astonishing piece was the
interview I conducted. The interview was between me and two of my really good
friends who say they have a bromance. I asked them a series of questions and they
responded as good as they could, and also I had them watch the Bromance
YouTube video, which they had never seen before the interview, for their input on it.
They have been friends for about 3 years now, they have almost the exact same
taste in music and films. They try to hang out whenever they can and play Halo 4
together. They give each other advice if any is ever needed and help one another
with difficult times in their lives. I asked them what would they give for the definition
of bromance and they said “A relationship that two best male friends have that
doesn’t cross the homosexual line.” I also asked for their feedback on Bromance
video and they both replied the same way,” The lyrics were mostly correct but the
video itself could confuse some people.” After we finished the interview, we all sat
down and played a couple hours of Halo 4
With all the information that I have acquired I feel like that I should add to my
personal definition up just a little bit. The true meaning of a bromance is a friendship
between two males that is meaningful. Also a bromance is having someone there
that is willing to listen to your problems as long as you listen to theirs, it’s having a
wingman no matter what the situation, it’s knowing your bro has your back, it’s
someone who will hang out with you and play XBox for hours on end and to never
give up on one another. I believe in all of this because of my personal bromance that
I have. Mine started in seventh grade math class when we first discussed the band
Avenged Sevenfold and we are still best friends now in our senior year of high
school. I and he have done each one of the things I have listed and the same go for
the two people I interviewed. It’s amazing what a best friend is but it’s even more
amazing what a bromance is.
