How do you get students to:

Come to lectures?

Pay attention and (ideally) take an active role in the lecture?

Do the reading?

Not have essay crises?

What have you found trouble with?

Make them exciting (to you at the very least!)

Be sneaky

Play music

Keep to time

Tell them “secrets”

Allow time afterwards to answer questions

Smile!

Come to lectures

Keep it brisk

Use examples for EVERYTHING

Use film clips

Randomly give out sweets

Use discussions and/or SMS

Pay attention

Explain your expectations at the start

Set it clearly ahead of the lecture

Remind them (email/SMS)

Make it as short as possible

Make it relevant (preferably to the exam too)

Have discussions about the text at the start of every session

Do the reading

Prompt every week

Build up the essay plan

Don’t worry about spoonfeeding

Give them the resources they need

Don’t expect them to work on end of term essays early unless you badger constantly

Not have essay crises

What the the difficult topics to gain and retain interest?

Why are they difficult?

What do students want?

Do you always give it to them?

Are students customers?

Which lectures did you find exciting?
