THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER

• I hope you enjoyed the activities and readings from last week. The next topic is from our textbook Spirituality, Health, and Healing. Our focus will be on the Healthcare Provider.

Here are a few concepts from the chapter:

• Spiritual relationships between healthcare providers and clients often result in a sense of strength, inner peace, healing & interconnectedness for both parties.

• While they may describe themselves as religious or spiritual, healthcare providers may be inadequately prepared to administer spiritual care.

• A personal inventory may be an effective way for providers to begin their spiritual education.

• Barriers to spiritual care include lack of education, lack of time, distractions, fear of invading the client’s privacy, uncertainty over other religious traditions, and concerns about proselytizing to clients.

DISCUSSION BOARD

• The Discussion Board this week involves evaluating personal core beliefs about religion and spirituality.

• First, you will complete a personal inventory using the Question Guide on page 52 of your textbook. Then, you will post an answer to the question “What did you discover?”

• You will also post an answer to the following question.

Suppose your patient/client has refused medical treatment for a life-threatening condition. With treatment, the client will recover; without it, the client will most likely die. How would you react and respond?

• Remember to place two more comments in response to other students’ posts.

“SEE WITH NEW EYES”

• Becoming and effective healthcare provider may mean that we need to see with new eyes. Rachel Remen, MD describes the concept in the following video:

WIKI ACTIVITY #1

• There are two WIKI Activities this week.

– The first involves searching in your environment to find God.

– This idea

comes from “God’s Photo Album: How We Looked for God and Saved Our School.”

GOD’S PHOTO ALBUM

I find God in the light. Because it always breaks through the darkness.

For me, God clearly lies in the birth of every new child.

I feel God most at the edge of the water.

WIKI ACTIVITY #2

• Keeping a Gratitude Journal is a common spiritual practice.

– According to studies, the practice of writing in a Gratitude Journal results in less insomnia and illness and a stronger sense of happiness.

– Remember the negative; focus on how the experience leads you toward gratefulness.

• Ask yourself:1) What have I received from this event or person?2) What have I given to this event or person?3) What troubles and difficulty have I caused?”

• There is a second WIKI Activity this week.

– WIKI Activity Part 2 involves creating a list of 15 things you are grateful for.

– Then you submit your list and 2-3 related photographs or images to the Group WIKI.

I think we have to be careful about what we label as a prerequisite for spirituality. I don't think you have to know a lot to have a spiritual life, but knowing gives life richness.

Learning is the beginning of wealth.

Learning is the beginning of health.

Learning is the beginning of spirituality.

Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins.
