York University actively encourages applications from students with disabilities.

York’s Admissions Committee selects academically qualified candidates for admission by examining each applicant's academic record and the relationship of any extenuating circumstances.

What does

“modified admission” mean?

• Applicants must meet all minimum requirements:– High-school Diploma – 6 grade 12 U or M courses– all Faculty prerequisite courses

• Grade requirements are given consideration

Applicants with diagnosed: • Learning Disabilities• Mental Health Disabilities• Physical, Sensory & Medical Disabilities All applicants must present a complete basis of admission.

• personal written statement

• transcripts

Physical, Sensory, Medical & Mental Health Disabilities

Required documentation

– complete recent psychoeducational report(three years preferred, five years accepted)

– Subtest scores (WAIS III)

– personal written statement (500 words)

– IPRC reports (if available)

– letter from Special Education Personnel or academic letters of recommendation

– transcripts and other admissions information

Learning Disabilities Admissions Process

If admissible:

• receive the documents

• admit then forward information to support area

• send letter with important information and contact numbers

• would never use the documentation to refuse an admissible applicant

If below requirements:

• receive the documents

• if reasonably within range then forward information to LD experts

• recommendation: admit, refuse or interview

• conduct interview; detailed recommendation

• committee decision

Learn about: •self-advocacy training •reading and writing strategies for university level materials •computer skills (including exposure to online learning environments)•adaptive technologies •study and note-taking skills •test-taking and memory strategies •time and stress management

Project Advance

Project AdvanceTo be eligible to attend:

– Documentation of a specific learning disability diagnosis – An average of 65% or higher in six 12U or M credits– A letter of recommendation from an educator at your high school – A personal statement (250 to 500 words) indicating why you want to attend Project Advance

Advice to Students• Plan ahead (update testing etc…)• Research postsecondary options

and requirements.• Identify!• Send documentation as early as possible.• Self advocate (we speak to a lot of parents).• Accept offer as early as possible.• Contact the appropriate service area ASAP.
