MODERN GEOMETRY

PLAYING WITH PATTERN \\ LAURA HUDEC

INTRODUCTION These products have been designed to inspire. Not only are they simple, geomet-ric patterns that have been refreshed in a modern way, but also they have been applied to products that I myself would buy and use every day. These patterns are all quite playful, bright, and use transparency to create new and exciting shapes and colors. These patterns were designed to be used and enjoyed by everyone. My inspiration came from the simplicity and versitality of geometric shapes. There are so many ways to combine them and layer them to make fascinating patterns. I wanted to put a new spin on some classic geometric designs and brighten them up with color palattes that bring out the best in each design. Working with color and pattern in this series has been extremely beneficial in my jour-ney as a designer. Using CafePress.com and Zazzle.com, I created products using my patterns that are useful and unique. All products seen here are available for purchase in my CafePress store and my Zazzle store, ModGeo Graphics. Please Visithttp://www.cafepress.com/modgeo andhttp://www.zazzle.com/modgeographics

INTRODUCTION

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

My name is Laura Hudec and I’m a Visual Communications Design student at Purdue University. I’m from Mt. Prospect, IL, a suburb of Chicago. I draw my inspiration from living things, especially animals and flowers. I also enjoy color theory and exploring unique color combinations.

My favorite design tool is a pencil and paper. I’ve learned a lot about the development process in my classes at Purdue and the best way to start a design is to give it life with my hands. Designs are living things, just like horses and begonias. They need time, nurturing, patience, and a lot of hard work.

GEOMETREESGeometrees Tote Bag$15.59Cafepress Shop

Geometrees Woven Throw Pillow$27.59Cafepress Shop

Geometric lines are set in contrast with semi-transparent, organic trees. The cool, earthy colors are soothing to look at and the trees provide a window to nature. The tote bag, mousepad, and pillow are perfect for this design because they show off the natural, simple feeling of the pattern. This design tessellates horizontally and vertically and would be great for a large item such as a shower curtain or a bedspread.

Cosmic Circles Key Chain$9.50Cafepress Shop

This playful, geometric design plays with transparency. The colors resemble an outer-space palette. The mug, key chain, and iPhone case exemplify this pattern’sversitality. The Cosmic Circles design looks best when it is wrapped around a product and covering all white space, as it is on their Phone case. This fun pattern is especially great for modern moms, but is a design that can be enjoyed by any age.

This dynamic pattern makes use of a range of colors. These stars could be falling, fading, or rising depending on your unique perspective. Diagonal lines make your eye move around the design and explore the different shapes created by transparency.

This fresh and frosty design gives the illusion of depth. Simple triangles make up a tessellating 3D design that plays with your eye. The color palatte for this design is made up of cool blues and purples in contrast with the usual scheme of hot, sandy desert colors. The tessellating pattern looks great

such as the laptop on a large surface case. The water bottle adds illusion to the design because of its soft curve.
