ALGEBRA II VOCABULARY REVIEW

√9

RECALL…

• Range• Domain• Maximum / Minimum • Increasing / Decreasing Intervals

• Intercepts

RANGE

Definition:

The range is the set of all possible output values (y-values) which result from using a particular function.

DOMAIN

Definition:

The domain is the set of all possible input values (x-values). (All the values that go into a function)

MAXIMUM

Definition:

The maximum value of a quadratic function, where a < 0, is the y- coordinate of the vertex.

MINIMUM

Definition:

The maximum value of a quadratic function, where a > 0, is the y- coordinate of the vertex.

INCREASING INTERVALS

Definition:

The function is increasing on the interval of the input values (x-values) when the graph rises from left to right over the interval. Both the x and y values are increasing.

Increasing Interval: [3, ∞)

DECREASING INTERVALS

Definition:

The function is decreasing on the interval of the input values (x-values) when the graph declines from left to right over the interval. The y-values decrease as the x-values increase.

Decreasing Interval: (∞, 0]

INTERCEPTS

The intercepts are where a graph crosses the x and y axes.

X-Intercept: An x-intercept is a point on the graph at which y = 0.

(Crosses the x-axis)

Y-Intercept: A y-intercept is a point on the graph at which x = 0.

(Crosses the y-axis)

NOW LET’S CONSIDER QUADRATIC TRANSFORMATIONS
