Why?

Pres. Polk really wanted to attain California and New Mexico. He was willing to buy the land, but Mexico would not even talk to Polk’s representative. Polk used the dispute over Texas land as an excuse to declare war on Mexico. America won the war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave America the Mexican Cession and secured the Rio Grande as the Texas border. The $10 million Gadsden Purchase in 1853 completed Manifest Destiny.
