Back to Basics in Skiatook
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self control; to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance,
godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you pos-sess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unpro-
ductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-7(NIV)
A new school year has started for both our children and adults who are back in school. As a former teacher, one of the things I remember, no matter what grade I was teaching at the time, is always starting the school year off with a review. Most teachers take a little time to make sure students know basic things from the previous year and review necessary concepts before introducing new knowledge. In most classrooms, students are on many different levels—each child is different. Our churches are like that too. Some people in the pews have been here their whole lives. Others are new to Christianity—perhaps they weren’t really raised in church. Others are here out of curiosity, some come to church because they have a need in their life, or are undergoing a crisis. Some are simply looking for a place to belong, make relationships, and call home. Even our own church represents a huge spectrum of where people are spiritually. So for much of September and part of October, we will begin a new series called “Back to Basics.” The verses from 2 Peter above illustrate the need to grow our faith so that we may be effective disciples for Christ. Growing in our faith results in some of these characteristics that the writer of 2 Peter is calling for. They also help us de-velop the Fruits of the Spirit as found in the New Testament book of Galatians. The writer calls for us to “increase” in these areas. Not just stay where we are. So how do we grow our faith? In our “Back to Basics” series, we will emphasize the most common, tried and true (yet too often neglected by many of us) spiritual practices that are necessary and helpful for faith development: Regular prayer, Bible read-ing, worship, service & volunteerism, giving and generosity, sharing our story, fellowship, and kindness among others). We will talk about these, and then try to give practical ways that these can be implemented and prac-ticed. Some may do all of these already, some may do a few of these, and there are some who have never quite had an introduction to faith development. We are all at different stages in our journey. So we will “review” for all of us. Every single one of us needs a refresher from time to time. So I hope you will join us as we go “Back to the Basics” for a few weeks. Will you pray with me that we will be a congregation who is stronger in faith than anything else?
Blessings,
Pastor Susan

Annual Charge Conference
Our annual charge conference has
been scheduled for Sunday, October
20th at 5:30pm in our sanctuary.
Charge Conference is our yearly
meeting to take care of the business
of the church. We celebrate where we
have been in ministry and plan for the
upcoming year. We also install new
leadership. If you are interested in
being part of the 2020 Leadership
Team, please visit with Pastor Susan.
Thank you!
To my Church Family:
I want to let you know how much you’re appreciated. You’re the best! Thank you for sharing a wonderful day with me as I cele-
brated my 90th birthday.
In Christ’s Love,
Glenna Long
Church Directory
The office staff is excited to share that the
church directories have made it in! There is a
directory available for every family, includ-
ing those families who were not here to take
part in the photo process last year. Please see
Ka’Lu before and after worship to pick up
your copy, or stop in the office during the
week.
Because participation was not as great as we
would have liked, the church had to pay out
of pocket to ensure that we have enough. If
you did not submit a photo to be in the direc-
tory, or you did not pay at the time you sub-
mitted your photo, we ask that you consider
donating $5 to help cover the cost of your
family’s directory. The cost of the directory
just was not part of our budget. If you cannot
or choose not to make a donation, there is
still a directory for your family, and we
would like for you to pick it up.
United Methodist Men
Our United Methodist Men will resume their
monthly meetings on Wednesday, September
11th at 6:30pm. All men of the church are
invited to discuss current and future mission
opportunities and church projects, as well as
partake in dinner and great fellowship. Meet
in the LAF building in the “snack room.”
Red Cross Blood Drive
Thursday
September 19th
12:30pm—6:30pm
Appointments available and walk-ins are welcome!
Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant pa-tients, and those battling cancer. Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood.
United Methodist Women
Our United Methodist Women would like to thank all the ladies in the church who have taken time to respond to their survey. If you have not received a survey or had a chance to respond, there is still time. Complete a survey and place it in the offering plate. The Methodist Women would like to know the wants and needs of the ladies in the church, in an effort to invite more participation.
The next scheduled meeting will take place Thursday, September 12th at 10am, in room 103, with newly in-stalled officers. Outgoing president Judy Supernaw and Treasurer Maryann Hobza welcome incoming president Lora Cartner, Vice President- Sandy Kimbrough, and Secretary/Treasurer Julie Guy. All ladies are welcome!

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED
PLEASE RECYCLE!
NEW PARKING LOT
Our new parking lot is finished and is already in use! It is beauti-
ful! We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Buster and Cindy Easky
and their company for doing this job! It is professional, beautiful,
and best of all—-water drains off of it! Buster actually went the
extra mile and after the original contractor made our parking spac-
es too small, Buster and his crew removed the paint, and redid the
striping themselves.
We are hoping that school traffic and general parking will now be
safer. We chose angled parking spots after consultation with the
Skiatook police department, and safety research. Angled spaces
are generally less prone to accidents and fender benders. The
new direction flow is chiefly for school traffic, with the new lot
being a one way entrance off of Osage. School traffic may exit to
Chestnut, Broadway, or even around the building on the gravel
drive. There will not be an entrance to the new lot from the LAF
parking lot. This reduces traffic from 4 lanes to 2 lanes, making it
safer for the school children. Thanks to Kiefer Jones for installing
the traffic signs near the street, and the handicapped signs as well!
Thank you to everyone who donated to the parking lot fund. Eve-
ry amount made a difference, and we greatly appreciate your gen-
erosity!
Have you ever thought about a spiritual kickstart for your life? The Walk to Emmaus is a Wesleyan three day retreat (Thursday evening through Sun-day afternoon). Men’s and women’s weekends are held separately twice a year in the Tulsa area. The next one will be held at FUMC Owasso. The men’s weekend will be October 24-27, and the Women’s weekend will be Nov. 7-10. Pastor Su-san will actually be one of the clergy participating in the women’s weekend this fall. It is a time of seriousness, laughter, prayer, fun, and learning. You will meet amazing people and make new friends! If you are interested, please contact Pas-tor Susan or James Prather for more information. I highly encourage the Emmaus experience.
