The Menomonee Falls Village Board approved aconditional use permit July 1 that will allow PlanetFitness to move into space at N87 W16899 AppletonAve. this fall.
Planet Fitness will operate 24 hours and will moveinto the space currently used by the Salvation Army.The Salvation Army will move into an adjacent smallerspace at Colonial Plaza. Village President RandyNewman later noted that Salvation Army requested theopportunity to move into the smaller space to cut downon their rent.
During discussion, Village Manager MarkFitzgerald noted that landscaping in the mall will needto be addressed as part of the motion.
Trustee Steve Raymonds said the request “wasdebated hotly at the Plan Commission (meeting).”Raymonds said several Plan Commission members didnot like the fact that the north portion of the mall wouldbe redeveloped while the south portion would remainundeveloped.
“It isn’t going to look good,” Raymonds said.Raymonds said the issue involved the fact that
Somerstone LLC had a new tenant “ready to go” in thenorth portion of the mall while there isn’t any new ten-ants ready for the southern portion of the site.Raymonds said a proposal that has come forward

Newman said the other discussion at thean Commission included comments fromembers to support the request “to get thisng going.”

The state budget signed into law by Gov.cott Walker last weekend meets several keyiorities while having the state live within itseans, Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills)id during an interview last week.
“It puts Wisconsin on the path forward,hich is a tremendous accomplishment,”arling said.
In a statement after the budget was signedto law, she noted that the budget includes a665 million income tax cuts. She comparede tax cut with the position the state was in
wo years, when the Legislature had toddress a $3.6 billion shortfall.
In addition, she cited surveys of job cre-ors indicated that they believed Wisconsinas headed in the right direction.
According to Darling, the two biggestivers in the state budget were Medicaidnding and financing kindergarten to 12-ade education. Both areas saw an increase
atewide while other segments of the budgetw reductions.
Darling also cited efforts to reduce abusepublic assistance programs such as
oodshare by having greater oversight andn effort to address a “skills gap” by focusingn workforce development efforts were othereas of the budget mentioned by Darling.
Darling and other local legislators wereiticized by members of the Menomonee
alls School Board last month after four areasconcern regarding the budget were not
ddressed in the state budget.The Menomonee Falls district sent a letter
Darling and other legislators requestingat:
•Funding in public education be tied to
the rate of infla-tion;
• Financialsupport for char-ter and voucherschools shouldnot impact thefunds availablefor public educa-tion and that allschool receivingstate aid shouldbe held to thesame accounta-bility standards;
•Eliminatingunfunded mandates and allow districts to pri-oritize student programming that is valuedlocally with the limited dollars available; and,
•That the Fund 80 used for communityrecreation be allowed to fund school districtathletic programs.
Of the four requests, the amount of fund-ing for education statewide increased but notat the rate of inflation, the voucher system wasexpanded outside of Milwaukee County butwas capped while the Fund 80 was frozenstatewide.
According to information from the stateDepartment of Public Instruction, generalschool aid to districts will increase by 1.1 per-cent.
Darling said she could not get support foraddressing the mandates as requested byMenomonee Falls. She further stated that themove to freeze the Fund 80 came out of con-cerns from taxpayers who sought “transparen-cy” regarding the funding mechanism. Shesaid the fund will be frozen to allow time toexamine if changes need to be made.
Darling responded to concerns about the

While there are ways the budget could
have been better, Darling indpleased with the final product
“We did the best we couhad,” Darling said.
