MEN ON THE MOON

THE BEGINNING OF SPACE TRAVEL…

• Fifty years after the Wright Brothers invented the first propelled plane, space travel was considered.

• The U.S.S.R. and the U.S. began a race to see who could get the first craft into space.

• The U.S.S.R. wins, sending the first unmanned craft, Sputnik, into space.

• The U.S.S.R. also sent Sputnik 2 into space, carrying a dog named Laika.

MEN ON THE MOON

• After Sputnik and Sputnik 2 were launched, the next race began: the race to send the first manned craft into space.

• The U.S.S.R. won again, sending Yuri A. Gargarin into space on Vostok 1.

• However, on July 20th, 1969, NASA sent Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, Jr. to the moon.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN…

• Neil Armstrong was the first one out of their lunar lander, the Eagle. He set up a small camera outside the shuttle.

• 600 million people watched as he and Aldrin set foot on the moon.

• Armstrong then recited the famous quote: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

• The two astronauts then planted an American flag on the moon’s surface.

BEHIND THE SCENES…

• While Armstrong and Aldrin are well known for actually stepping on the moon, there was another person in space with them.

• Michael Collins stayed aboard the Colombia (the command module) while Armstrong and Aldrin became two of the most famous men in history.

• Collins is the third member of the Apollo 11 mission that is not as well known.

RETURNING TO EARTH

• On July 24th, 1969, the Colombia reentered Earth’s atmosphere.

• Parachutes were released, and the Colombia drifted into the Pacific Ocean thirteen miles from the target point.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

• Since the Apollo 11 mission, space travel has advanced considerably.

• There have been many more moon landings.

• We have also put a rover on Mars, many satellites and even a space station into orbit, and cameras and telescopes all over space.

• The data from the moon landing has contributed to all of these achievements.
