Researching Genres
By Andrew Hancock
+Definition Of Genre
A genre is a style or type of music literature, movies, or other media.
In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism.
+Audience expectations
When someone buys into a certain genre, they expect certain themes and genre conventions
For example:
If someone goes to watch a comedy film, they would expect there to be high-key lighting, bright colouring, happy and fast paced music, etc.
In contrast to this, if someone went to go see a thriller film, they would expect low-key lighting, dull colouring, eerie and creepy music that creates tension and fast paced editing.
+My Chosen Genre
The genre I have chosen to do is thriller.
Expectations of thriller:
Fast pace editing
Low key lighting
Dull colouring
Sketchy font
Possible themes of death and violence
