QUIP Experience

Agenda

• Introduction

• My QUIP Experience

• Relation to CHEE 221

• Internship Incentives

• Q&A

Meaghan McTiernan

• Suncor Energy for 12 months– Process Engineering

Development (Oil Sands & In-Situ)

• Supported Upgrading at base plant in Fort McMurray

• Main projects included Caustic Injection, DB Desalting and re-writing coker fractionator protocol

Suncor Family Day Volunteers at the Calgary Stampede 2014

Meaghan McTiernan

• Summer Term Job - 4 months at Suncor Energy– Drilling Engineering Group

Drilling Engineering Team at GlobalFest 2015

Our ride to Stampede 2015

• Validated liner installation software for directional wells

DB Desalting Overview

• Problem: Chloride content, asphaltenes and naphthenic acids in the feed to the Upgrader expected to increase• In the presence of steam, corrosion and fouling become

significant issues

DB Desalting

• New technology on mined bitumen (widely used in Refineries)

• Removes salt from the oil through use of emulsion forming & breaking as well as electrostatic grids

• Vessel internals are proprietary to Cameron; implementation into the plant done by my team

DB Desalting

• How do you design a new system into an existing plant?

-start with your knowns; put into a PFD

-where are your tie ins to the process?

-what flow rates, temperatures and pressures do we need?

•Goal: remove salts from the oil• measure composition in outlet stream

•Capstone design project (CHEE 470) will ask these same questions

Process Design

• Aim to minimize cost; only monitor what is needed– ex. monitor flow exiting the vessel and induce flow into

vessel (CSTR)

• Composition matters!

• Determine vessel operating conditions–what are your desired parameters?–what results will you accept?

QUIP Overview

• 12-16 months degree related, paid internship • Completion of 2nd or 3rd year • Register with QUIP, attend workshops and use

QUIP job postings to apply• Professional Internship degree designation• One year pre-graduation

experience towards P. Eng• Test a career in a particular

industry• Next info session January 6th
